Title: Windows wont start?
Post by: rm187 on March 11, 2013, 05:48:53 PM
Currently I have a Bitcoin computer working fine, mining for a few eeks.
1x 5870
1x 5850

I just received another 5850 and PCI-E risers. I connected the GPU and started the computer. How ever windows hangs at the booting-logo. I had latest ATI drivers installed and computer was fine before. Removing the second 5850 lets windows start fine.

Any ideas on whats the problem?

you got a good enough power supply? could be the new cards faulty have you tried booting with just the new card and leaving the other 2 out

Have you tried booting with both cards separately?  That should give you an idea of whether one is bad or not.

If they both boot individually I'd suspect power supply as the poster above said.

Both 5850 cards[old + new] work individually, [with the 5870]

Both 5850 on the PCI-Ex16 produces the same problem. So I do not believe it is power supply (Seasonic x-750w gold+)

BIOS detects the cards correctly [ATI 5800 GRAPHICS UNIT]

Do ATI drivers have a history of glitching out on boot-up? I am going to boot and uninstall drivers add the cards and see if windows will start.

does that include trying the new 5850 on its own without the 5870 and without the other 5850?

Mother board manufacturers cut corners on the PCI-e configuration. I have one downstairs running right now that has 6 slots. If I use the last slot it disables all three of the PCI-e x 1 slots. This information was something I missed but was included in the manual.

I had problems getting five cards loaded and when I did my network card was intermittent (it's a on board pci-e device). A real problem when mining.

I had two 850 watt power supplys in parrallel so lots of power.

I ended up running 4 cards. One in the PCI-e x16 slot and 3 in the PCI-e x1 slots.

In general when building a rig it's been the motherboard that gives me problems. My latest was on a cheap motherbard with two x1 slots and one x16 slots. I add one card at a time and test...then add another. The mother board gave me all sorts of problems when I put the first card in the x16 slot. In fact I was thinking of posting it on e-bay. The solution was to start with my first card in the x1 slot.....from that point on everything went smoothly and I was able to install 3 cards.

In my opinion motherboards are the biggest problem in building a rig.

Yes, it includes the 5850 working by themselves and with the 5870.(on the x16 slots)
The problem only happens when there is more then 1 of the same GPU. Wether it be x1 or x16 slot.

Maybe it is motherboard, will do more tested trying different slots.
