Title: Can i place a S7 miner in a normal fridge or freezer to cool it down in silence
Post by: dr3boodk on June 22, 2016, 03:14:27 PM
Hi,

i am new into mining and now since the mining is more profitable i was thinking to start mining in my apartment but i don't want it to be noisy and since the electricity price here is 0.04USD per KWH.

so it is not a problem to put a normal size fridge or freezer and place 2-3 S7 miners and drill cables out. Would my idea work ? or is there a another solution that can cool it down or at least make it less noisy since i am planing to get 8 miners in the future.

i have also read that "electronics do not like any type of moisture whatsoever." and the only way to make it quite is to " turn down fan speed and under clock it"
but will it still be as efficient ?

Please advice me

Thank You.

No. You will burn up the fridge/freezer as its compressor is not designed for that kind of load.

You will not find a consumer-grade refrigerator capable of handling the heat put out by one of these miners, let alone several.

What a refrigerator does is pull heat from the air inside it and radiate it out into the room. So even if you had one that could keep up, you'd still have all that heat in your apartment. The refrigerator would be running constantly, and probably burn about as much electricity as the miner does (this point is up for debate and based on the efficiency of the chiller pump and such, but the point stands regardless) which would increase your power demands (and therefore operating cost) substantially, and possibly overtax your electrical infrastructure which can cause fires.

Short answer is, unless you have access to an industrial freezer it's not going to work. Of course, even if you did, condensation remains a problem. There's no good way to deal quietly with the heat density of an S7. Immersion cooling is possible, but I said "good way" and to do immersion cooling right tends to get fairly complex and expensive.

No this is not the way to go.  What you read about moisture is pretty true, if you get moisture in miners overtime it really can have bad effects up to killing the miner.  This is getting old at this point but here is what moisture ad corrosion can do to a miner: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=521520.msg11018389#msg11018389   So not good at all on that front.

I would look for a area that noise is not a issue or you can find a way to lesson noise with how some try making boxes with a little more noise damping.  But if you are running 8 of them finding a area where heat and noise is ok would be best.  That is just a good amount of power/heat when getting into that amount of electricity with miners.  What is area like your planing on putting 8 miners?

Thank You.

your best option is buy the s-7  and clock it to freq  475 then set fans low like 2500 rpm.

if you are in the usa consider buying a modded s-7ln from sidehack as it is pretty close to perfect for your needs.

As it turns out, a refrigerator isn't designed to actually cool things off, for the most part. It is designed to KEEP things cool. That's why there is such a focus on the insulation to minimize the heat that penetrates inside the box, That's also why the old advice about minimizing opening and closing exists.  A refrigerator is NOT designed to REMOVE heat from an active source inside itself (i.e. a miner).

Not going to work im sorry man.  I would suggest getting one gpu and start to mine altcoins, like ethereum or others.  less heat, little to no noise.  And you can adjust the number of gpu's according to heat/noise requirements.  for example I added a 280x too much, and now my garage is a sauna.  a.  god.  damn.  sauna.

No, you have not to do that, a friend of mine put the laptop on the fridge to cool down it after a long time of rendering and it was really hot. After a half an hour he wanted to turn on the laptop and it didn't worked, the monitor didnt turned up because of the condensation.
