Title: Poll - Who would you vote for to replace Gavin, if it was needed
Post by: ripper234 on March 13, 2013, 06:29:50 AM
Based on this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=152446).

Candidates are listed alphabetically. This is of course non-binding, just trying to get a feel of how much trust these fine individuals have within the community to lead a project of this magnitude.

Long live Gavin.

P.S.
Yeah, I made you choose one of them, even though some of them might be trusted by you.
This is how this poll is structured ... you have to pick one.

FYI:
Gregory Maxwell = gmaxwell (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=11425)
Mike Hearn = Mike Hearn (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2700)
Pieter Wuille = Pieter Wuille (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2786) (I think he was known as sipa here, possibly renamed his profile)
Jeff Garzik = jgarzik (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=541)

On a somewhat related note gmaxwell needs to shave his neckbeard.

Shaving is for pussies. Literally.

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Could you add the option "I am not informed enough to make such an important decision"?

i dont know enough about any of them, and im only familiar with Jeff. Personally id leave it to the devs to decide. they most of all know each other best.

that said, id be interested in gavins choice and reasoning.

is there any type of informal hierarchy regarding skill and capability and possibly previous jobs where they were in charge of a group of programers where they were the lead on a project.

They're all excellent programmers, so that leaves the decision to politics.  By process of elimination, that means no Swiss, no Feds, no one with kids.  gmaxwell wins by default.  Never let it be said that a neckbeard can't help you in life.

All of these devs hit show results and blushed. Don't let them lie to you.

Hmm, what's wrong with the Swiss? You don't like cheese? :)

I would add a dark horse candidate like LukeJr.

Stephen Fry.

Why? No way he's relevant. No way.
Anyway this poll is now closed closed for new candidates, I don't want to distort results by adding candidates in the middle.

Why is Luke-jr not listed?

FWIW, I always self-selected myself out of the running.  Gavin once asked me What If, and I told him I was not interested in the lead-dev mantle.

Pieter and gmaxwell are the two that come to mind, if Gavin ever goes poof.

But who knows.  Sometimes in the Linux kernel, the maintainer winds up being some relative unknown with great skills and knowledge.

Yeah, I'd say that's true of the original Linux kernel too. Linus Torvalds, if I remember, was unsure of his ability to create an OS.

Given the block subsidy wont end for over a hundred thirty years I dont think anyone currently living will still be working on bitcoin at that stage. Unless...

Why should he be listed?

IMO, everyone on this poll is a good choice but if I had to pick, I voted for gmaxwell for generally being more active on #bitcoin-dev

Why is Luke-jr not listed?

Because waiting at least two years before allowing one megabyte blocks is not compatible with scaling up to deploying a Google portable datacentre-in-a-container in every hobbyists home within two weeks to two months.

We should wait at least two years before risking breaking the poll by including him.

On the other hand I am glad Peter is pulling ahead of Mike because, well, my budget can't quite accommodate one of those portable datacentres for at least three weeks to three months and, gosh, who knows, at the rate BFL Labs is delivering maybe even longer.

I don't even know Peter so don't know why Swiss might be better than Neckbeard but if Mike and Luke are going to be involved anyone but one of them in charge seems prudent to me.

(What, I am exaggerating Mike's position? Y'think? Anyone else's?)

I have no specific input on the poll question but I would like to nominate grau to be a core dev. I don't know if he has a neckbeard though so it's possible he's not qualified.  Perhaps if he agreed to grow one?

The idea of gmaxwell being lead dev scares me slightly to be honest. He's a decent enough guy, but he doesn't entirely think things through sometimes...

I voted for you before reading the comments...as is my nature on these polls.  But I forgot that you have a family to watch out for and that would be a negative in my mind for this particular position.

If Gavin exits stage right or some other accident of fate argues for such an event, I would favor finding someone with a long history in the crypto (or other sensitive technology) community who may or may not have anything to do with Bitcoin but has a decades long history of making good decisions which are obviously in favor of the broader user-base.

I daresay gmaxwell, except I wish he had more time to be op on #bitcoin-otc. I'm not sure if Pieter and Mike usually go by their full names or handles on IRC.

Pieter goes by the name sipa on IRC, I use the nick TD.

So he's sipa here, right? Now I get it, I had no idea who he was, but I've seen sipa often enough on bitcointalk.
