Title: Where can I keep my BTC during the halving?
Post by: bitscointalker on June 30, 2016, 03:45:14 PM
I normally leave my BTC in Polo so I can exchange them whenever I want.
During halving I was wondering whether this is advisable, or is better to keep them in cold storage.
What do you think about? Any suggestion?
Thanx to everyone!

Keeping them into the exchange is really not recommended , things could go wrong in online services.
I suggest keeping them in a Desktop wallet like Electrum or If it's a big amount then cold storage is the best (Paper wallet).

really?doyou think poloniex is safest and comfortable place to put and store your bitcoin?i think you dont need to risk your bitcoin on exchange just because it will more easy to trade with altcoin, its not wise. i think the best wallet to store your bitcoin still on wallet, offline (hardware) or online wallet are the best choice so far.

If you think price will pumped on halving than hold them in your bitcoin address rather than in exchanger. And don't worry if you like to sell your coins when your desired price is reached, just send bitcoin to exchanger with quite large fee to make it go within next block. I don't think within 10 minutes or so price will move more than 10 to 20$. So don't worry and only put bitcoin in addresses whose private key is with you.

I guess no good to save bitcoin in a long time in the exchange, because it is not a special place created to store bitcoin. it may be better to use a trusted official site for storing bitcoin that you have, and maybe blockchain is a very good place, because it has long been used. but if you do not want to sell for a long time, and want to play a trade at any time, may save the bitcoin that you have on the site of trade, may be better.

I think sell it when the price is high after block halving so that you can make more profit before the price is going down..
Also don't hold your bitcoin in polo better to look for other wallet or desktop wallet so that you can o that you far if the polo is down or scam in the future..

Keep it secure in an easily accessible wallet, whether it is a online, offline or hardware wallet. Only then you can make the move when the price is at its peak and get the profit of halving.

It is not advisable to keep bitcoins in exchanges as any time anything can happen and you dont have control over the exchange wallets. so it is always recommended to keep your bitcoins in your web or desktop wallet and when ever you feel to sell that time you can transfer and sell it. whether it is halving or not always this process will save you from any exchange fraud or scams.

You should as a matter of principle keep the bulk of your holding in cold storage. The last time we had a serious run-up, we lost MtGox. We could see another exchange go down in this bull run. Be cautious.

What i do is i have several wallets. I have paper wallets for the vast fortune of bitcoins i hold but dont trade (its not much) and then i have my mobile wallet which i use for buying things i need quickly or for whatevr reason. Ive got core running on my pc which is a kind of in the middle man and then i keep small amounts that im willing to lose on exchanges. You shouldnt be keeping everything on an exchange. Thats golden rule no1 in bitcoin, If you dont control your private key then you dont control your bitcoins.

And what do you think halving will do to the coins you stashed? Because I don't understand your way of thinking here.

Coins stashed in online wallets - especially exchange wallets are not safe, because as we all know exchanges are the most vulnerable bitcoin satellite services.
Halving is not an event that will impact wallets or coins (in a direct way) which are already mined so it doesn't matter where you will keep yours.

Only an insane man would leave Bitcoins outside of his own hard disk in 2016, the only exceptions being paper wallets and specialized devices like Trezor or Ledger Nano which is pretty cool.

But please do not leave your BTC in exchanges, the catastrophe is unavoidable then.

I agree, there are records in history where exchanges shutsdown.  Worst is several of them are the Larger Exchange.  So, unless you are using your BTC in trading, better not leave it in exchanges.  Save it in cold waller or whatever the best method is.

it doesnt matter where you put them, your coins arent affected by the halfing, only the block reward is. continue to use your bitcoins as you would.
however i suggest not keeping them in an exchange because thats not that safe.

Doesn't matter what Bitcoin's up to in the wider world, for the sake of a few minutes to an hours' wait there's no reason to keep anything on an exchange any time ever. Even the exchange itself would agree with that if they're reputable.

I don't suggest that you keep your coins in the exchangers , you can simply keep them into your wallet address which you control it and having private key

Mt Gox and other failed exchanges should have been a lesson to most of us, but it seems as though people wants to make the same mistakes. We warn people not to use exchanges as a storage for

their Bitcoin, but they simply do not listen. These are all centralized {hackable} services and should be avoided at all cost, or only to trade in small quantities and to convert to fiat, if needed. The

safest method to store your coins, would be cold storage {paper wallets} but take care in doing it offline.  ;)

No only for the halving, always is better to have your bitcoins with you than on exchanges. Use cold storage for long time investment, or keep them on a desktop software wallet, and sent to the exchange only when you want to trade with them.

i highly not recommend you to keep your money in an exchange because in my opinion there is a huge risk that bitcoin exchanges might fail or be "robbed" and you will lose money

i think you should keep your bitcoins in a cold storage and not transfer it during the halving because the price of the fee will be huge, also you might put your bitcoins to an online wallet

In an address that only you have the keys to, in a cold wallet. Even if you plan on speculating on the price, hear my words: alot of zany bitcoin heist have been going down lately as we approach the halving. I'm telling everyone to be extra vigilant at the moment, your bitcoin are very precious right now and I think the bad guys are aware of this.

I would recommend to keep in the exchanges only the amount that you are willing to trade (i.e. the amount that you are ok to lose) , so that you won't miss any potential spike in the first days after the halving. Keep the rest of them in desktop wallets or in cold store.

Halving or no halving, it doesn't make a difference when it comes to the way you store your coins. Stop keeping your coins in an exchange when you are not using them. Offline storage is the best possible option as always. Do it now.

Just keep it on your wallet. Halving is just like an ordinary day to bitcoin. There are no big issues there or changes really.  But if you are afraid that the price will go down then froze your bitcoin for the moment. But halving is not a big deal that you will panic as on to where to hide your bitcoins. Just do your daily transaction like what you did before and do not panic.

it is never a good idea to keep your bitcoin on and exchange site. they can run any at any time without a warning or a sign of becoming a scam. just like many others like cryptsy that turned into scams.

yeah a few years ago turned into a GOX Mt exchange scam. they made off with more than 1000 BTC. Fortunately I did not keep a lot of bitcoin on the exchange. I think you have to learn from that experience. no site will always be alive or no truly safe

You should NEVER keep your bitcoin on an exchange. If the exchanges fucks up and something goes wrong, ALL your coin are gone. This has happened too many times, yet people still don't know this.

Keep your bitcoin on an address you control. Most likely on your computer, your phone, or a trusted website like xapo, or coinbase.

Well IMO I think you should store it in your personal wallet. That would be safer than in exchange. Exchange can close down their site and offline wallet wouldn't.
Store bitcoins by associating them with addresses called “wallets”. Wallets can be stored on web services, on local hardware like PCs and mobile devices, or on paper print-outs. Thefts of bitcoins from web services and online wallets have been covered in the media, prompting assertions that the safest way to store bitcoins is on secure paper wallets.

You dont need to change what your doing because of the halving.  If there was a hard fork i would withdraw.  But people here dont understand that traders need to keep their coins on a exchange so you can make sells instantly if needed.

if you have big amount of bitcoin it is always better to keep it in a secure cold wallet not only in halving period . this is a principle security measure for your bitcoin (cold wallet ) also you have to consider small amount of btc in exchange for daily trading.

Yes, the best way is to use a trezor or have a pc from which you connect sometimes to the internet. If you use it on your main pc and you download, or even open your mails, your wallet is
vulnerable. It's your money, so make sure to secure it.

Anything over 5 bitcoin I store on my trezor wallet. It's safe and the price for this security is nothing compared to the fact what you can lose.
So forget the halving, if you got money and you are serious about it, store it offline or even better, buy a trezor.

You should keep your btc somewhere it can make interest for you. If you just want to store them then a cold wallet would work. Put some to work in a btc bank like BTC POP. It will earn  5% interest in a saving account wallet there.

Yeah save it in your wallet as that is the safest place to save your bitcoins, cannot afford to trust any site for making any investment now, as in long run it will turn out to be a scam.

You can keep your BTC anywhere you want during the halving. It is not going to impact what you already hold. It will not deduct any of your bitcoins.

Probably you have a wrong information about the halving. It is just the decrease in mining rewards. The block will contain half rewards compared to the early rewards. It is not going to impact what you already hold. So chill and stop worrying.

You can use my Wallet if you want :D  Am sure it is in very good hand! :D Just kidding.  Seriously, you can store it in a place where you are most comfortable :D.  I tried to use polo but i was too noob back then.  I din use any secondary password like google authenticator.  I was so confident until one day all my BTC where hacked even my altcoins that are stored there :D Then I learned the lesson the hard way :D But that thing never happened again ever since i enabled the 2fa.

Its much better for you, and safer to make some paper wallet and when you think or wish to sell coins then you send it to exchange site. It is just precaution for you, cause we see how things can go wrong in just couple seconds. Its wise for everyone here, not just you, to make safe wallet where coins will be secured and safe from any possible treats.
I got a legger wallet, and I think its great. High protection and access only with usb drive and pin. You have other same wallets you just need to find what is suitable for you, and of course if you wish good protection you need to pay. Don`t forget that cheap things always can make you a problem, cause of that they are cheap.

I think that storing all your BTC in an exchange (even if there's halving or not) is not a good move.
You better have a main wallet where you store it all and just send some BTC to other accounts when you need it.

yeah it's up to you to save your bitcoin I also save a few percent of my bitcoin in exchange sites. certainly have a function like you. when prices are high I can directly make a sale without the need to send it out of wallet without need waiting confirmation

I normally leave my BTC in Polo so I can exchange them whenever I want.
During halving I was wondering whether this is advisable, or is better to keep them in cold storage.
What do you think about? Any suggestion?

I think poloniex not a wallet considering poloniex is an exchange I think you have to be careful because the risk is quite large. could only exchange that is owned by a third party to be a scam? although poloniex have great trust. suggest for me do not put all your bitcoin in exchange site

"During halving" nothing especial is going to happen, even if there is a rise that rise will be small and the big rise will come after the shake out. so keep on holding your bitcoin in your wallet, preferably a cold storage and only take them out when you want to spend/sell them

This special thing can happen anytime like hashocean recently so if you can control your bitcoin on your own then its better for you. During the halving i would suggest OP to hold in a hardware wallet or in a multisig wallet.

you can keep them where ever you want them before the halving, during the halving and after the halving. halving shouldnt affect this at all!

well id oubt that it is a good idea to keep your bitcoins wherever you want because bitcoins might just easily be stolen from any exchange if you will be keeping it on it

i think that it would be the best to keep your bitcoins in your bitcoin wallet, in this way i would manage to make my bitcoins sit safe in my wallet, that would be the best thing  in my opinion

Yeah, just wait till finished then halving it will not be a problem. Reduce just a form of revolution become better, so there will be a big problem. Halving is definitively affect the price of the bitcoin so this can you take advantage of for profit

you can do whatever you want with your bitcoin and keep them anywhere even on an exchange site but remember one important thing:

as long as you don't have the private keys to your bitcoin, you don't really own those coins.

you can store them in an online wallet. I think it would be safe once over before halving. My advice after a few days send the funds in your wallet to exchange. it all to make it easier when you want to sell bitcoin you have.

What do you and other people mean about BTC halving? Isn't it actually rising in price. And in case of halving, I think you can just keep it where you usually do and wait for it to rise again)

leaving your coins "stored" in online wallet services is a horrible thing to do. people are in bitcoin because they can now have full control over their money. if you leave your coins online, then you give a third party control over your coins, plus it's not safe with hacks and insider thefts. offline storage is the only way to go. if you want to trade or just sell your coins, then just send them to your exchange. it's that simple.

yep, i agree that you should keep your btc in your wallet. my point was that halving doesnt affect that at all!

If possible, get yourself a hardware wallet and never turn to anything else.

Lol what do you think halving is the most amazing thing of bitcoin. so you think there is nothing special other than halving? I think whenever bitcoin could pump like somedays ago. although in during halving so anything can happen in bitcoin in during halving or after halving its same

I think bitcoin store in large quantities in the exchanger although not halving it was very risky, I suggest you save bitcoin in your personal wallet. That is where you have full control over the wallet. :) Thank you

If you are into online wallets dont go international go to your local website wallets. And see if you know the address of them. That way if something happen you go to them or sue them if they try to steal it.  Get some screenshots for proof.

You dont need to change what your doing because of the halving.  If there was a hard fork i would withdraw.  But people here dont understand that traders need to keep their coins on a exchange so you can make sells instantly if needed.
yeah I think it is better to put it in the reliable exchange. yeah maybe so you can sell them directly when prices rise very quickly. I now keep all my bitcoin in the local exchange. of course I hope to get a high price and I could have a big profit

Speaking of wallets, I heard a lot of people switching to Electrum. Why?
How does it differ from other wallets? In terms of security?

Well I don't think that is good decision to keep all your coins on any exchange although halving doesn't make any impact on it but there is so many risk involve in it, from my opinion better to move them into a clod storage or desktop wallet which are more better option to keep them safe.

You can keep your bitcoin in your bitcoin wallet so that the value will rise because if you keep that in your local money or currency the value will stack at the same so you dont get profit for that trading basic principle must apply buy low sell high.

ordinary bitcoin wallet is definitely not a good decision if you have a lot of bitcoins because in this way it can be stolen, i would go with the offline wallet

decision I think is good. indeed it would be much better if we save our bitcoin exchanger for halving day in order to more quickly and easily exchange it . :D :D
