Title: How did you learn about Bitcoin?
Post by: hitemup on March 17, 2013, 05:57:38 AM
The last topic was three months old, some people don't like bumping old topics. So... how did you learn of Bitcoin? Website, word of mouth?

I first heard of it while browsing a popular "Front page" website about a year ago. Just a few weeks ago I was sold on it and decided buy my first coin.

Seen it around on a few tech news sites and such but figured it was a big scam before researching some more.

Hobbyist, Investor or Casual user/buyer?

I'm more of an user/buyer. Maybe with enough funds I'll hold on to enough and make a  profit.

Seen it mentioned lots of times, I'm fascinated by technology, but it was an episode of the good wife (Season 3, Episode 13 - Bitcoin for Dummies) that made me investigate it further.  I then spent about 3 or 4 days lurking in these forums to try and learn as much as possible.  As I had a 5870 in my machine already, I built my first mining rig and got it working using GUI Miner (since switch to cgminer).  I've spent the last 4 weeks digging up some of my old hardware and now have 5 x 5870's mining bitcoin and 1 mining litecoin.

Initially saw mention a long time ago and thought it was just a GPU benchmarking tool.

Saw it a second time as a currency thing through this article here and well I've been mining/free faucet hunting ever since  8)

Governments make more and more efforts to abolish cash or to restrict its use (see Spain, Italy, France).

I was wondering which alternatives were available because I cannot imagine a society without the possibility for anonymous transactions. Then I heard of SR and Bitcoin and I knew: This is it!  :)

It is because of online gambling that I learn about bitcoins. At first I am not interested about bitcoins, because it seems complicated as I read the WiKi. But when I realised that I can actually buy and sell bitcoins from Australia. I realised that BTC are the best e-currency that are currently available on the internet.
1. I can buy and sell locally, as I am not living in Europe, most e-currency seems so much cheaper to buy if living in Europe.
2. Low transaction fees only about 5%. The other e-currency such as webmoney or liberty reserved, it is 15% for purchasing.
3. It is anonymous
4. The value of BTC so far had been growing. It is even better than real money, as the value had been increasing and not decreasing much.
5. Also, there are so many sites that giveaway bitcoins for free.
6. There are more and more sites that we can spend our bitcoins.

BTC had my thumbs up. It really is the best e-currency at the moment.

I heard about Bitcoin originally a few years ago from a news article on the internet (probably BBC). Then forgot about it until I happened to come across it again on Wikipedia.

I found out about it a few years ago from an article on Hacker News. It was titled something like "The Most Dangerous Idea in the World", or something like that. I was fascinated by the implications of bitcoin.

I got involved, created a valuable service, and never looked back.

stumbled across it at circa 5am on the 21st July 2010 - shared it with a good friend, who shared it with amir, who then got in to it and organised the first bitcoin conference - funny how things work, wish I'd staked in it then rather than later - could have had several thousand BTC, instead i just kept 5 and ignored it for a couple of years whilst i worked on other stuff

I'm not rightly sure, I know it was a couple years ago but it didn't really click. I was reintroduced to it by Reddit rather recently.

Definitely about the same time that I learned about Tor a year or two ago.  I ended up purchasing about 50 coins for $2.50 each, sold and repurchased them and finally decided that $12 per coin was the highest they would probably reach and sold them all.  Went from extremely happy to very disappointed now that I didn't keep them.  :-\

Hazek on ronpaulforums.com. I was turned off by the first 2011 crash, but when I saw the price was rising again back in February, I was convinced and started diving in.

I've heard of quite a few cases of digital artists whose Paypal accounts are terminated because they do some racy "adult" art commissions.

One of those artists posted on a forum sharing the bad news and bitcoins were suggested half jokingly as a payment alternative, saying nobody understands them.

That made me curious, gathered information and enden up buying.

Was at a conference and heard it mentioned as a way to pay for the service that was being discussed. Then wasted 3 months before researching it.  Kicking myself now for waiting so long.

I had heard here and there about it from a few friends into torrents. Read about it at around 11 a coin. Got into it around 19 a coin. Woke up today and was a very happy man.

I also collect other bitcoin stuff too. Like memoriabilia and I like the magazines as well. I have a few shirts too, but not really for wearing out hahah, although one is cool.
