Title: MikeEpps
Post by: mitty on March 18, 2013, 12:51:20 AM
User MikeEpps (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=86467) PM'd me in reply to my WTB BFL singles topic, saying he had 4 units for sale for $2000 and would sell me 3 for $1600 (I was requesting 3).

He registered today, only has 5 posts, and when I asked him for a pic of the units he sent me what looks like a photoshopped picture another member posted of a BFL single.

I obviously didn't pay him so I can't know for sure whether he's a scammer, but just thought I'd let everyone else know.

Pic he sent me of "his" BFL single (strangely enough he couldn't take a pic of the other two he was "selling" me): http://s02.imageupper.com/1/7/H1363557812958920_1.jpg

Where I think he got the original pic from: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=127093

Am I being overly cautious here?

No.  Not with the shopped picture of proof of ownership.  It is an obvious scam.  If he had no pics you could not say it was a scam.

+1. It's a scam. Please consider escrow for high risk transactions with newbies.

Ty; that's what I figured but I thought I'd post his username here in case he tried to get anyone else with the same account.
After being scammed twice* I guess I'm starting to learn my lesson, haha. (I'm not as cautious with PayPal transactions since their buyer protection is quite good.  I guess the fees go toward something.)

(*On PayPal and I got my money back both times)

Always use escrow for high value transactions with anyone.  Even your grandmother.

FTFY.

And thanks for being a reliable escrow agent!
