Title: Creating a wallet with a particular id
Post by: QuintinFrerichs on July 08, 2016, 05:51:36 PM
I would like to make electrum wallets with bitcoin IDs that I choose, and although I thought that would be easy enough, I have run into trouble. I created an ID to use for bitcoin, and then created a wallet on electrum with this ID, and received bitcoin to that wallet. Unfortunately, it's designated as 'watch-only', meaning I can't actually use the bitcoin. Does anyone know why this is, and how to set up a wallet with an ID I choose beforehand?

You'll need to get the private keys of your choosen ID (they're called 'address', by the way. not ID.) and import it.

How do I import that? Also I have a private key for the address, but not a seed phrase, as when I created the address (on bitaddress.org), I wasn't given a seed phrase.

The same way you enter seed phrase to restore a wallet and/or addresses to create a watch-only wallet (Restore a wallet or import keys option).

Also keep in mind that if you use custom private keys then you wont get a seed, which means that your wallet file must be backed up many times, because there is no other way to restore it after. And keep your password safe as well.

I hope you know what you re doing regarding creating addresses correctly.
bitaddress.org can be a great program if used properly but a future nightmare if you have not generated your private/public key pair safely, did you creat them direct from the site or copy the page and generate offline?
