Title: FBI May soon open an investigation about ethereum intellectual property fraud
Post by: visaco on July 11, 2016, 05:33:36 PM
After claiming he’d filed formal complaints with the FBI, the man who alleged that Ethereum is his stolen intellectual property says he is making his first attempt to contact the media about the theft.

Although Vitalik Buterin is the identified brain behind the Ethereum project which has gained notoriety especially for its smart contract feature, Jared Mimms claims that Buterin stole his idea.

ETH has made it live already. I'm not sure if it matters still but an idea is just an idea which can't be patented.
I could be wrong but why now? Where did Jared go years before ETH skyrocket.  he probably just sit and read everything thinking that ETH won't work.

I think Jared become jealous after seeing ethereum getting so much popularity and may find this time suitable to file complaint where vitalik is already busy in dealing with this DAO attack and hard forking.

This may sound easy but as we have learned with working on various altcoin projects, if there is money involved some people will go to great lengths to commit fraud by forging and doctoring “official” photographs.”

it is all about money.

I do not buy this. The FBI is not the lead agency in the United States to deal with this

If there is a valid patent and there is infringement then civil litigation for patent infringement would be the likely result not an FBI investigation. If it is a securities violation over the initial sale, the promise to deliver the Ethererum before it was created could very easily be considered a security, then the SEC would be the lead agency. The most likely I see here is violations of the US Bank Secrecy Act, in the initial conversion of the "securities" into the de?-centralized virtual currency known as Ethereum, and in the proposed fix to the DAO "hack", by changing the ownership of funds outside of the Ethrerum block chain. These type of actions typically require registration as an MSB and the filing of certain reports. If the latter have not occurred then there may be grounds for civil and / or criminal prosecution, with  the lead agency being FinCEN.

Between, the dao, now this and what's coming for eth I've decided to sell all mine for the time being and invest it in other projects that don't have the same foul smell protruding from them.

ETH is dead.

Who is this Jared Mimms? Is he a former partner of Vitalik who was left behind and is now coming after him? This might be a simple case of the situation like Facebook.

This right here. Who else did he call upon, the Fantastic Four?

If this is untrue then why did Cointelegraph print this? Maybe they have the corresponding documents to the claim of Jared Mimms. Who is the representative of Cointelegraph in Bitcointalk? Maybe we could ask him to produce the copy of the documents.

First an idea can't be patented and second if he didn't published something to back his claims, that's worthless. That's just a blatant attempt to win free money by procedurity.

If it isn't true then I guess, someone who want to buy cheaper ETH.

ETH can now considered huge, i don't even think a FUD like this can drag its value down to $5. The DAO hack didn't even get them down to $10.

But if this FUD and Jared Mimms is just trying to scare everyone then why did cointelegraph print story? We might see the bottom of this soon.

So what does that say about cointelegraph? That they are also instrumental about spreading the FUD and could be biased against Ethereum? I find that unbelievable because are the press. They should be unbiased and facts based.

What, like the BBC?  All media have their own agenda.  If it is true, i will believe your statment bbc.reporter, when i read about the FBI investigation into ethereum in vitalik's bitcoinmagazine.  After all, the BBC did a real good job of reporting how it was complicit in rampant systemic child sex abuse over decades and decades.

One thing is for sure, ethereum has and continues to destroyed investor confidence in crypto-currency.

Best answer and hilarious. Sue math for sure. At the end of the day ETH will be just fine, I believe it is unaffected by the numerous threads in this message board.

FBI sneaking in would be the last thing it wants!!

This article is absurd.

Even if it had any merit...
It would require a multi-million $$$ civil court action for IP infringement...
Unfortunately, talking about building stuff in 2013 does not give you any legal rights.

I agree with that. That guy should publish his evidence and show us that he is the inventor of the Etheruem.

This seems a little improbable, this would be a civil suit at best. The FBI would be waaaay more interested in the actual theft itself, not this. I honestly don't believe the FBI is all that interested with this at the moment, but I think that will change. The hard fork kinda negates this whole debacle, which is why I wonder why we went through all of this.
