Steam has intergrated a Bitcoin payout system; meaning you can buy their games and software from the Steam store; its not only limited to the store but you can also buy ingame items as well; like for example you can buy a chroma 2 case key for Counter Strike using Bitcoins.

probably. why not? online games and online money/payment are possible, in my opinion, because it will make the users easier.

but I think it will not be in the near future. I mean it depends on how famous bitcoin will be. if bitcoin is famous, it can be used for online games payment/fiat money.
and another affected factor, I think, is depending on the country whether bitcoin is legal or illegal there, not banned.

If you meant for a direct bitcoin currency in that game, it's not possible since no way the developer will earn money from that if they will not implement their own currency in-game. Unless they will open an in-game store of equips, items, spells etc where you can purchase it directly with bitcoin without using their own in-game currency (e.g. diamonds, gems etc.)

But for purchasing a bound currency in-game which can be purchase thru bitcoin, that is possible.

i believe that soon all the places that are currently accepting money online as in selling something with accepting credit cards, paypal,... will soon start to realize how much better using bitcoin is and they will switch to using bitcoin soon.

The prospects for Bitcoin to become the leading in-game currency are very good. Especially for MMORGs, implementing Bitcoin could significantly boost overall trading activity and in turn revenues for the game developers. The reason is that the on-ramp and off-ramp transfer of funds becomes a seamless process. Entry barriers for game investments by casual players will be greatly reduced and funds will be available much faster.

Of course, most games will still have a different name for their in-game currency for atmospheric reasons, but Bitcoin will be the underlying base. The transformation to Bitcoin will not happen overnight though - I think we will first see multiple payment options with Bitcoin being one of them.

ya.ya.yo!

yes i think it will happen. because bitcoin is the best way of payment online and it can be very good to be used in games.
and in fact it has already started happening with the biggest gaming platform called Steam accepting bitcoin already it is only a matter of time before everyone else starts doing the same thing.

Bitcoin can do that in my opinion, everyone who use bitcoin as currency already knows how easier is to deposit money somewhere, how safer we feel when we send money and leave address then to pay something with credit card, full name and address and many other things we don't like to share.
Bitcoin is made for internet and paying things using technology. I will not be surprised when bitcoin become leading currency and everything can be paid with bitcoins. I believe that is a plan, btc to become mainstream and everyone to use it anywhere. Games and internet will be first thing that btc will conquer. And then other things will come.

It's a great concept/idea, but just know that on top of any aml kyc compliance, games where players can exchange in-game currency that can be withdrawn into real world currency will also have to allot resources to watch for money laundering and other fraud. Not an easy thing when your game has tens of thousands of players.

I am one of the biggest supporters for that and I approach these game developers frequently via email requests and also gaming forums to incorporate Bitcoin into online games. The problem seems to

be uncertainty about the legality to use Bitcoin as a currency. Some game developers circumvent that, by creating their own "token" systems and this in turn being bought and sold by legal fiat currency.

I will keep on trying, but it will be much better if this was done collectively or done by third party service providers, for example Coinbase. They can pitch the direct conversion from Bitcoin to fiat much

better.  ;)

this has been one of the things that we have been trying to make happen for some time. i have been requesting this just like my above comment, so far i only know of steam that has accepted this request. the rest seems to be afraid of bitcoin and don't want to go through the trouble of adding a new payment method to their system!!

I have been actively searching for years for a real cash economy game that actually exists, besides Project Calypso. For the currency to be bitcoin would be icing on the cake. Afterworld was awesome while it lasted, but ultimately failed; none of these projects seem to actually make it to fruit. I myself would love to get together with some forum guys and make a MUD (text based mmorg) with a bitcoin economy, but I can't code for shit, only have world building/ game mechanics ideas.

But I think the legal aspect of this (game would essentially being a bank) is why we don't see more of these. Too easy to launder money through a platform like this, or steal massive amounts of value through hacking or fraud.
My second post was deleted, but I can only assume that's because it was a second post, and not because of the content. Reposting here because I spent time typing my opinion and wish to share it:

Quote
But, if any of you guys are down for the commitment of making a MUD, and we can get the right guys on board from enough disciplines, I would certainly dedicate some resources towards making something like this a reality.  I've thought about this, losing the graphical client would make for a much easier project, something more accessible to more markets (players) with lower spec'd systems. Probably a science fiction setting if bitcoin were integrated directly, but fantasy environments would work (the concept of magic doesn't jive well in a real world economy, shooting deadly fireballs for little to no effort with no energy expenditure or cost doesn't reflect real world entropy).

It is a challenge building a sustainable real world economy as well, adjusting the Eco to your game mechanics as well as changing player interests and a shifting real world market. Typing it out, I truly understand why I have been searching so long for something like this in vain.

This is very possible to happent but the problem is the proportional conversion of ingame currency to Bitcoin.  We all know that ingame currency has no limit and can easily be acquired through selling, hacking and killing mobs.  And Bitcoin is limited to 21M coins, Maybe Bitcoin can be  use as payment to certain items and exchange of ingame currency to Bitcoin can be made.  The thing to consider, as what the earlier comment said is the exploitation of the sytem.  Possibly there will be lots of bot character ingame, making the game Bot infested and much less enjoyable for real players to play the game.

I would not deny that the possibility is high, considering Steam, as one of the largest gaming community, has already adopted bitcoins as a form of payment. So, bitcoin sooner will be available in each and every gambling site.
