Title: Working on rebranding Bitcoin
Post by: Headsaflame on March 19, 2013, 07:35:18 AM
I'm pretty new to bitcoin, but I feel it needs some work on the branding side. I took a few hours and did up these mockups:

Any comments?

Cool design, but I'd suggest not cluttering up download with all those social widgets. They should be placed elsewhere. Use that spot for learn more, read the wiki, etc.

Good advise.

This is definitely a work in progress!  I did this yesterday, and I'm sure there will be quite a few revisions before I get one that sticks.  I'm trying to get in contact with others who are trying to update bitcoin's image.

You won't get very far with those spelling errors.

I disagree.  I think the social widgets are tastefully done.  I am not a fan of social widgets, but they are an important element to use, and they fit in well with this design.

I think that the choice of using that much of that shade of orange for the color scheme is questionable, though.  It just seems a little too abrasive for my eyes.

Great job on the designs. I like it alot and more importantly it looks much more appealing to the 'Twitter crowd'  ;D

I'm surprised by the quality of your design and i'm usually hard to appeal on website designs. You did an amazing work.

Beau-ti-ful

I wish your rebranding gains momentum within the community. You could even start your own website with it to try and spread the word to the world!

Nice job, that would surely the Twitter crowd on board, or the least, get more attention than the current version of their site.

Now somebody just needs to make it easy to use.

Bitcoin needs to be a phone app so simple even your parents could use it.  ;)

I think the simple and easy apps are on their way.  Once we get a desktop app as simple and widespread as skype, we'll really be in business.

Drop the word free.  The first time someone gets prompted for a mandatory fee because their tx is low priority or over sized that false free promise seems like bogus advertising.  Bitcoin isn't free, it has never been free, and it will never be free.  Even people who are able to send a tx without a fee pay for the network through the inflationary effect of new block subsidies.

Whitelisted for the meaningful contribution. (and good job on the design)

While its a lovely design, I think the copy needs a little work.

For me the advantage of bitcoin is that its inflation proof, and I can use it internationally for a very low cost.

Others may have other reasons that makes them use it.

Maybe it might be an idea to find the killer unique selling point of bitcoin first, and then add that to this design?

Great work getting everyone this fired up btw! :)

When somebody invents a phone simple enough for my mom to use, then I will start work on the app :)

I've got a completely different redesign in the works. I'm committed to getting us a website that rocks.

We need a site that looks good next to the likes of paypal, squareup.com, or dwolla.

I'm going to keep everyone updated on the progress of this.

Thanks for the comments!

I think it looks great, just you have a typo for your next round, "little to know fees", should be "little to no fees".

There are quite a few typos I know.  I rushed this in about half a day.  I'm really working on the design and overall look than the text. That will come next.

Thanks for the input!

Don't mix fonts. The elegant Ampersand juts out like an open sore surrounded by the sans serife text. It reeks of pretentiousness.

Keep the social media links beneath the video. Get rid of the facebook likes thing below "download". Everyone hates that, it has no informational value and it looks like cancer.

Otherwise very clean and nice.

It looks good, although the download link does get a little bit buried (at least, I missed it the first time I looked). I personally still like the old Bitcoin logo, but the design of the page looks nice.

I wouldn't chane the btc logo.
Rest is better than the original bitcoin.org website.

People that try to contact developpers won't mind searching on the website, the email addresses take too much space on the original website, so does the name of the devs. I don't want to take any credits from them but it's just not as much appealing.

Changing the logo might be a good legal move.  I know that when the Liberty Dollars went down the fact that they used the USD symbol was used against them in court.  Using anything resembling the USD symbol might be used as evidence against BTC traders, and the current BTC symbol looks like a USD symbol made with a B instead of an S.  I mean, I"m not a lawyer or anything, but from what I read anything that makes it look like you are trying to pass something off as legal tender is a bad thing legally.  You can barter with anything, but 'legal tender' is a complicated concept legally.  That might be something to ask a real lawyer about.
