Apparently the latest versions won't work on windows XP.  Source: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1375317.0
Try out the older versions (https://download.electrum.org/) instead.  Electrum 2.5.4 worked fine for me when I still use XP.

1.Coinbase is not a wallet, its an online exchange having their own wallet system.Storing coins in any of the online wallets is not safe.

2.Might consider upgrading your PC ? I mean its 2016.

3.The only possible alternative I can think of right now is this https://multibit.org/ download and check if its compatible with your configuration.
