Title: What is the probability of Bitcoin being replaced?
Post by: hitchingAride on July 15, 2016, 11:58:42 PM
Is Ethernum a threat to Bitcoin?

-Ethernum is faster than bitcoin
-has been gaining popularity
-its good for smart contracts.

Is Ethernum going to replace bitcoin, die out as a fad or coincide with bitcoin? Are we likely to see any altcoin possibly kill bitcoins or will bitcoin simply incorporate any improvements from altcoins, taking away all advantages.

Well it did survive this long so it could just be the killer of bitcoin. Only time will tell.  :)
It did look like it was just a fad earlier this year when it dropped too some very low prices from what I remember when reading on the forum about people say "I told you so!" to others who bought into it early.
But they are laughing at them now for sticking with it this long.  :D
It just keeps going up everytime I check on it on a daily basis. But then someone will see my post and say "Another sucker on the ethereum train! ::)".
But hey! I don't care! I want to jump on this train and take the ride that I missed out on with my stubborn ways when it came to bitcoin(it was $0.50 per BTC when I first heard about it :-X).

>There's billions already invested into bitcoin.
>It's pretty stable, compared to other cryptocurrencies.
>Lots of popular commercial giants/banks have already taken a leap of faith to integrate the technology.
>It's easier to obtain bitcoin, compared to any other cryptocurrency.
>Features can be reviewed/upgraded/removed pretty quickly.

It'll be difficult for any other coin to compete with bitcoin.

The world is begging us to be ecash. My bet is if they find something that can scale, they'll jump on it, non-mining nodes be damned.

It is kind of small i think,we see that bitcoin is pretty much big,and remember it was the first well known cryptocurrency.
Anyway in some time we will see it surely replaced by anything else, however i dont know when, maybe in 2025? 2030? hard to say.

I think it will not happen. bitcoin strength remains a magnet for many altcoin. bitcoin is the main originator of digital currency system. as well as the USD dollar. bitcoin be a force in the digital currency system today.

I believe so. For bitcoin to be replace, the possibility is very slim to none. An upgrade YES, but to create another cryptocurrency as popular as bitcoin is no. Bitcoins achievement is huge as it is called the mother of almost all altcoins.

So far bitcoin is having the biggest network support. This support is important for the continuous improvement of the protocol and no other alt-coin come close to this. So at the coming years, the probability of bitcoin being replace is very very low.

I don't think so, both ethernum and bitcoin can go along together and remember, the price for each bitcoin is more expensive than Ethernum. If the bitcoin's price is very low, i think Ethernum can replaced bitcoin.

No altcoin could replace bitcoin since it is already big, popular and many already invested unto it. I agree that bitcoin achievement is par beyond to other coins. If there's a chance that ETH could compete to btc then it would take 10 years I guess.

Maybe other altcoin surpass bitcoin someday but not now,and also not ethereum even ethereum had a popularity it self. but  I think he can't surpass bitcoin . Maybe other altcoin will be born capable to surpass all of the coin in crypto world.

I think no alternative coin will replace bitcoin. They exist because of bitcoin and bitcoin is the father of cryptocurrencies. The coin that is second to bitcoin is quite farther from bitcoin. That why its impossible to replace bitcoin by other alternative coins.

The great thing about technology is that is can be replaced.
Bitcoin has set in place a set of standards that almost everything that came after has adopted.
Most of the work done to integrate bitcoin can easily be switched to another coin.

Will it happen...People like stability...alot!  Bitcoin would have to have to fail, or come close to it before something else would take over.

Bitcoin developers should be looking at developing the protocol, rather than squabbling about blocksize.
If they are not serious, an alt can overtake them.

Yes totally agree with you.Any altcoin is no way near bitcoin right now.Every altcoin is valued in terms of satoshi so they are value according to bitcoin so dont think any coin can replace bitcoin. It will only grow in the future.

I think ethereum is not will replace bitcoin because ethereum is new coin although it has smart contract. And ethereum just for trading alt coin only, there are not people who use ethereum as payment method. But it is just my opinion there are not people who know about future.

There is a low probability that bitcoin will be replaced even 20 years from now
Ethereum on the other hand will increase in price but it can never replace bitcoin. It's like pounds to dollars, pounds has a larger value compared to dollars but did not replace dollars. Ethereum may one day has a larger price compared to bitcoin but will not replace bitcoin.

The probability of bitcoin being replaced for now is low. Maybe in the next 20 years the probability of it being replaced is bigger but still low in my opinion. I also think that Ethereum wouldn't replace bitcoin since it is not that portable to use for now but there's a low probability that it will replace bitcoin but having faith on it is hard since the probability of it getting even near to bitcoin is low.

10 % in my opinion, no more then that, even less maybe. But who can answer on this question?

I believe we will see some threats to bitcoin, and people who predict right when will this happen and which coin can be that will earn a lot of money. It's open market, many things can happen. Maybe bitcoin will be strong and stable enough one day, and nothing can influence on that, but we can't say that with 100 % certainty.

Probability of bitcoin getting replaced is very low. The reason is that follow the bitcoin's development several digital currencies got existed back to back. Among all those bitcoin is the one that survived long with such a growing potential and increased price.

It will be very difficult to replace bitcoin, more and more people already adapted bitcoin and some of the story starting to accept bitcoin, ethreum ever claimed that was going to replace bitcoin, but up until now there still no big movement from ethereum. So i dont think ethereum is a big threat to bitcoin

I don't think so it could be possible ever. All altcoins inspired by bitcoin and created after years of creating bitcoin. bitcoin is the first and biggest crypto currency so my answer is no.
If etherium is getting more popularity and peoples more getting enter to it then bitcoin is getting even more popularity every day and thousands of dollars being traded and exchanged every day with bitcoin.
and it remains for long time.

For temporary there are no coin that can be compare with bitcoin, bitcoin still the most famous and still the most used coin globally, but for a long term maybe there will be another coin to replace bitcoin its all depend on the coin user

no. i won't happen in future also. no matter how long term it could be. bitcoin can't be replaced by any altcoin.

Very high, and likely. I think a government sponsored, centralized replacement will pop up eventually, and bitcoin might be made illegal. But, this will drive the price of bitcoin up, as it will be rarer, and still anonymous. I can certainly see bitcoin becoming a black market currency in the future.

bitcoin is the new technology which is growing itself, so it is not yet old and obsolete like fiat so any new technology has to come a lot after bitcoin gets old.

for now, bitcoin can not be replace in any of altcoin, maybe if there are no bitcoin again or the supply is end, then maybe bitcoin can be replace with another and it takes a long time before it will happen.

and for ethereum, there are posibility to be second bitcoin but not this time, it should wait until next years.

I don't think that any other virtual currency will replace Bitcoin.
Bitcoin started whole trend, was first, and based on Bitcoin's idea all other virtual currencies started.
I don't think that Bitcoin users will give up from bitcoin.
Many of them will also try other virtual currencies but their hearth will always stay with Bitcoin :)

It might just happen, because the Aether show a better advantage. But it will not occur if the user still remain faithful to use bitcoin BTC. The Aether might be superior, however if the user preferred the bitcoin BTC then it will not happen. Perhaps one disadvantage of ether to those under the command of the company

I think Bitcoin has a quite high probability of being replaced, but obviously not by any altcoin currently existing. It will probably be replaced in a sense that it will develop so much it will cease to make sense to call it Bitcoin :) It can also be replaced by another coin in a very long term, who knows...

I dont think Bitcoin would ever be replaced, if another crypto-currency where to rise it would be immediately rejected by larger firms unless it has more better fisiblity and security that bitcoin. Bitcoin already had a tough time to be accepted as payment in companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Steam; if it were to fail, then these companies wouldnt accept another cryptocurrency

It can be a good replace for bitcoin, it can be used too the way bitcoin can,but not theses soon. Bitcoin gains more popularity and makes more features and development at this time that are being acquired by many users. Having Ethernum as an option is fine, but using it as a main cryptocurrency ,I doubt if many users will adopt it.

If Bitcoin can overcome its transitional phase now, without dividing itself into two different coins, then it is unlikely that it will be replaced. However, there are other coins growing very fast in adoption such as Dash and Ether.

Moreover, new comers such as Pivx and Waves might pose a threat if they gain mass adoption, with their proper inner governance structure. Only time will tell, but it might be the case that Bitcoin will coexist with many digital currencies, at the same time without being replaced at all.

Well, don't underestimate the success of scammy systems.  Look at the three highest alt coins: ETH and DASH, both heavily centralized, both having serious historical problems (one has lost its immutability and permissionlessness, the other one a huge instamine).  The third one a banking coin with full premine.

The two more "honest" coins are Monero and Litecoin at the top of the palmares, with much smaller market caps.

There's no guarantee that crypto markets value decentralisation or permissionlessness.  It seems rather the opposite. They may just as well prefer scammy games. Bitcoin being centralized by miners, ETH being a totally centralized coin having already shown what that means, DASH being an instamine centralized coin, and ripple being a bankers coin, take up 95% of the crypto "investment".

In a way, this is not surprising: centralized systems can manipulate much more, and market much more, than decentralized systems which are no game.
