Title: Backup of the Blockchain on Storage Inside a "Faraday Cage"
Post by: aquarius on March 20, 2013, 07:07:42 AM
Hi, fellow newbs :)

I was just wondering if it is known if anybody is backing up the entire blockchain on a storage unit that sits inside a Faraday Cage ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage ), just in case of a major solar flare like the one in the 1800´s .. I realize that the side of the planet that gets hit directly is way way worse off, but if the flare is strong enough it might affect the electrical- (and electrical components) infrastructure of the entire planet..

Or am I being a bit too overly paranoid?  :D

Or print it onto long lasting paper every couple of weeks to have a physical backup...

yes but wouldn´t that be a bit expensive (especially) in the long run compared to the price of a storage unit large enough plus the Faraday Cage itself.

and the storage of paper backups would be a pain in the dick to archive and then re-sync to the network ;)

If every blockchain in the whole world goes poof, we'd have other problems. At least, once computers are up and running again, we'd start a new genesis block and everyone with working mining hardware would be getting 50 BTC again.

ok yeah I agree, so I shouldn´t be too nervous since I am invested in a mining operation :)

but it would still suck for those with big holdings and even paper backups for them.. thinking the blockchain always stays up.. and they are correct not to worry, but scientists say we are overdue for a gigantic flare event.. so that is where my thoughts about the subject came from :)

Someone, somewhere, has the blockchain in cold storage. Or my house with the metal roof is going to protect my little laptop. Or the skyscraper building you are in will protect your little desktop. Or the 3rd underground level basement will protect your mobile device.

Yeah, someone somewhere will have a blockchain copy that survived.  Although I think we'd have bigger things to worry about if we did get hit with a flare...
