Title: I lost my passphase are my bitcoins lost?
Post by: zend7 on July 18, 2016, 01:22:36 PM
I would like to know if I lost my passphase for a wallet that holds bitcoins. Are those bitcoins lost for good?
Nothing can be done to recover them? And no I don't have the private keys.

There's no 'Recover your password' button in your wallet, if you can't access your private keys those bitcoins are lost forever.

Try this guy here: https://walletrecoveryservices.com/

If you're lucky enough you might recover your coins.

They are not necessarily unrecoverable. A wallet passphrase is specific only to the encrypted wallet file that it is "locking". If, by some act of divine intervention by the God of Entropy, you are able to generate the same private key that holds your Bitcoins, then you can gain access to the coins in that private key once more. If you have a unecrypted backup copy of that wallet file within the last 100 change addresses, then you can recover those coins as well.

There is no penalty for attempting to brute force your own passphrase, so that is your best option if you know the character length of your passphrase and the subset of characters that your passphrase was composed from. If I were you, I would try to remember as much as you can of your forgotten passphrase, and then attempt to brute force it on your own using a custom script.

Alternatively, the previous poster suggested a service that would attempt to brute force your wallet file for you for a fee. I wouldn't recommend relying on a third party for something like this, but I suppose it's something to consider if you are desperate and have no other option available to you.

Thanks I will try this type of method but how reliable are his services? What percent of a success rate would using this way have?

Bitcoin Core wallet.dat design makes it such that they only need parts of the wallet and hence they cannot steal it. The process is more or less like regular bruteforcing, the more things you know about the password (e.g. some parts of characters) or less complicated the password is, the easier it would be.

As per my knowledge if the passphase are lost  then 99% their is no chance of recovery, it can be done only if you know some of the key words in the passphase balance cannot tell more about it.

Unless you have imported the private keys from that wallet there there is 0% chance to recover your bitcoins if you have lost the passphrase. Its strange to me the amount of people who don't take the passphrase way too seriously as thats the main key to recovering your bitcoins even when you lose the password. Sorry for your loss but even those services that claim to crack the wallet cannot do anything I am afraid although they are your only chance to try. Next time treat your SEED ,PASSPHRASE like the most important thing of your bitcoin wallet and as such should be protected with fanatic up to paranoia security.

It was a web wallet so not access to .dat file or anything that I can do to recover it. I did not even remember any of the words to it, I just copied it to notepad and had it saved a text file in a folder and just forgot about since I had the passphase saved in my browser and it only asked for a pin to access the wallet.
I will try to use that link that the above poster suggested I give a go with.

Thanks for answers.
