Title: I dream of building a libertarian shire
Post by: notig on March 22, 2013, 04:28:13 AM
Just thought I would put this out there. I have read things on the internet lately about people wanting to start their own societies. I also read tonight about "galts gulch" in chile.

Anyway here is what I crave.

The society I imagine would primary live in monolithic domes. They would be built buried in the ground and covered with grassy knolls. Round windows and chimneys might be visible. Essentially it would look just like the shire from the hobbit but the houses themselves... monolithic domes are better IMO than "stick built" houses. They withstand natural disasters incredibly well. (wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes/hurricanes, termites.. etc) . They are also very energy efficient and although concrete isn't carbon neutral.... they would have a much longer lifespan than normal houses (400 years vs 100).

So that's one main point of what I want in a libertarian community . I don't really want to get the impression of it being a hippy place though. I like technology. So some kind of internet would be a must. Maybe geothermal for energy.

Besides monolithic domes... there is one other major criteria I would have. Some may find it strange or silly. it's called humanure. I believe that our high tech sewer systems are actually a bad design. Good for hygiene......... but bad for the soil. When people eat vegetables or meat or anything ... nutrients come from the soil. They should be returned to the soil. Human manure decomposes as any other manure does... and if it is composted properly and returned to the soil you can ensure that the soil will thrive over time. I believe the health of the soil is crucial for any society.

so aside from those things... a local currency ... or even bitcoins themselves could be used for all trade. It would be cool to have an entire bitcoin community somewhere.

Take a look at the Garbage Warrior (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrMJwIedrWU). He already walks the talk.

I wanted to stop there when I drove pass the entrance to the community in '08, but was pressed for time. Taos, NM, is on my top ten places to retire, if not in the top five.

I'd been thinking the same thing for a few years.

This place has two dome buildings connected by a passageway. Radiant floor heating, and the owner is an interesting guy. I lived there for three months, and it is pretty cool but it wasn't for me.

The original owner built it mostly himself, mostly by hand.

It is impossible to make a classic libertarian community.

Classic libertarians are against standing armies.

But as soon you make a successful community, countries with standing armies will attack you. So...

You cannot have a successful community of any kind without your own standing army. You must abandon part of libertarianism, or don't do it.

This was amazing ;D  But they're both such intelligent people!  Paul's mind is set in today, but Joseph's is in the tomorrow.  They're not enemies, they're just advocating different points in the timeline.

That's the catch, tho.  It works well if everyone's playing by the same rules, but when America's got the biggest nation in the world, everyone has to play by America's rules or succumb to force.  Just look at what happened to Iraq when they decided they didn't want to play with America anymore.  In order for it to work, you'd have to dismantle nations from the inside-out.

That's wasn't the real Ron Paul though.   :)

Yeah, Grafton is the place to go to build a libertarian shire. Just make sure you have a good car that can handle rough roads. [I lived there for a while too, at what is now known as the Grafton Embassy.]

I'd say that's more of a side project to a person's big goal; just as a pedophile might dream of being an astronaut.  The pedophilia is just an unfortunate part of him.  Then again, if a man's ultimate desire is to be accepted as he is, there would be an interesting conflict for the rapists and the pedophiles.  I know a rapist can satiate his desire with make-believe, as people who want to be raped (a contradiction as I see it but I can't vouch for them) can also fulfill this desire.  But a rapist who wants the real thing is never going to get what he wants without a hitch, lest he do so without witness.  So I wonder, do some people desire to rape, or is it an act of desperation for being at a disconnect with those around them?  Imagining a better society than we currently have, where people would find it easier to develop relationships with one another, would we also see a decline in rape?

I'm no sociologist, nor a psychologist, but my guess is yes.
