Title: how do you recover files from corrupt harddrive
Post by: target on July 29, 2016, 04:20:09 PM

I have a one Tera drive that i use to save my files in there, I have this drive for more than 5 years now and there are tons of files I have on it.
Its now corrupted as i can see it because every time i click the drive, it says "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

can you guys suggest what i can do to recover the files inside the drive?

here's how it look.

https://www.piriform.com/recuva Try this tool. If it fails than your only option will be copy the drive 1:1 under DOS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XCOPY) or Linux. Last resort is hardware rescue at specialized facility but this may cost some serious bucks.

This program can also copy a drive under widows http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm

almost convince to do it really "chkdsk /f" seem a good tool.
i'm just wondering if i still have a fall back if this won't work like one of the users on that thread which the command completely erase the entire disk.

Whatever you do, don't use the original broken drive to experiment. The more you use it, the worse it will get.

Under Linux, use ddrescue with two passes to copy the data either to a second drive (same size or bigger), or into a file.
First pass (-n) to copy all readable blocks, skipping corrupt ones to save everything that is ok.
Second pass (-r3) to retry bad blocks to attempt to rescue parts from it.
Then mount your image (eg with the ntfs-3g tools) and copy your data.
