Title: [SOLD] Technics SL-1500, Cambridge Audio 640P phono preamp, 18 records - Sold
Post by: sega01 on March 23, 2013, 04:11:38 PM
EDIT: Sold. Thanks for your interest!

Hi everyone,

I've decided to give up my vinyl collection. It's a bit sad, as there is truly something special to listening to vinyl. Fiddling with the stylus, cleaning the dust off the records, trying to get the armature weight in just the right spot. There's quite an art to it and a lot of reward to being able to listen to an old, old record just the way it was intended to be played. The quality of vinyl can be quite decent, but I think the best bit is that most records (not all) were mastered much better than CDs. Most masterings are far too loud and drown out the details. Vinyls tend to be much more sane in that way, although there are exceptions to that, particularly with newer records.

The lot includes:

First generation Technics SL-1500. People tend to say that the SL-1500 is better than the 1200 out of the box, but that the 1200 has more modification potential. I have this one setup with a Shure M97xE catridge that's rated quite well. I can't guarantee the stylus is in perfect condition as I am not a vinyl god by any means, but you're more than welcome to listen to it and decide for yourself.

Cambridge Audio 640P phono amplifier. The reviews on these speak for themselves. I paid about $180 for it new, and that's roughly still what they go for. Supports both moving magnet and moving coil catridges.

A monoprice stereo RCA cable.

And 18 records in varying condition. Some are very nice, others are pretty bad:
Bad Company: Desolation Angels
Survivor: Eye of the Tiger (Rocky, anyone?)
Queen: News of the World
Queen: The Game
Audioslave: Self-titled (Mastering on this one is not the best, but much better than Out of Exile)
Audioslave: Out of Exile (This one's mastering literally makes my ear's hurt)
Billy Squire: Don't Say No (Worst condition of the lot)
Tool: Lateralus (Mastering not the best on this one either, but it's decent enough. Tricky album for vinyl to handle)
Tool: Opiate (For when you're really feeling angry)
Free: Fire and Water (I think it's a German Island Records unopened until recently, but pressed in 1970 if I'm not mistaken. This is a brilliant record, although one of the tracks is recorded a little slower than on the English version)
AC/DC: Highway To Hell
Led Zeppelin: I (Not a bad copy, not in perfect shape.)
The Police: Ghost in the Machine
Black Sabbath: Paranoid (NEMS on 180 gram vinyl, I think. Sounds pretty good, but I could only listen to Ozzy for so long)
Styx: The Grand Illusion
Styx: Paradise Theater
Linda Ronstadt: Different Drum
Pat Benatar: Precious Time

Price for the whole lot is 5 BTC 2.5 BTC, plus 0.5 BTC for shipping to the 48 States unless you pick it up in San Antonio, Texas.

If you're looking to upgrade your vinyl setup to something mid-range or start listening to vinyl, I think this is a good way to go. Check out the reviews on each of these components and I'm pretty sure you'll find they are great deals for the price range.

Thanks,
Teran

Pretty cool things to sell for BTC, but you might have better luck if you break it up, or at least list it on Bitmit.

Honestly, I think it is overpriced.   For $300 you can find Technics 1200 (The DJ Standard) and those hold their resale value really well.  With that said, I would price it over 125 and under 250 and in that range, it is a very quality turntable to listening to vinyl.

OP gave an excellent response and I wasn't clear on the size of the package.   It is actually a solid deal.

I didn't know that you could find SL-1200s for $300, that's pretty cool. Always thought they were $500+. The SL1500 is probably in the $125-250 range itself. The cartridge is $70, the preamp is about $180, and the 18 records themselves might average around $5 a piece. I feel that this is a very reasonable price at 3BTC shipped for all of that. If you can find a comparably priced bundle deal, let me know and I may reevaluate the price.

OK, I will give you that.   I am editing my post.
