Title: Wallets on multiple machines
Post by: notnormals on August 06, 2016, 10:01:24 AM
Hello, Please could I ask some advice.

I would like to know if its possible to use the same bitcoin address (electrum)  on 2 or more computers at the same time? would ins/outs show on both wallets? Could I break something? (lose coins  :o )

Thanks :)

You could use the wallet on two separate devices but I don't think you would be able to do it simultaneously

I think you could use the wallet on two separate devices simultaneously. If you tried to spend from both separate devices simultaneously both transactions would be broadcast, and the network would accept one which would invalidate the other.

As long as your wallet software allows you to import custom address (private key etc), you should be able to use the same wallets on different software together.

You are talking about electrum and i am quite sure they allow backing up importing/exporting full wallet which you can use in another device simulatenously with same addresses.

Yes you can do it, but your bitcoin is one although you use 2 computers. You can not do double spend when will send bitcoin.

yes it is possible, you can build the wallet on one PC and then on another restore the same wallet from seen to be able to use the bitcoin on both computer because this way you have access to the private keys on both computers.

or you can copy the public key Electrum gives you and created the second wallet as watch only wallet and this way only be able to see the balances and not have the private keys.

funds are stored on the blockchain. not your computer.. a private key/public address is just like a username and password..

you are free to use it on multiple machines but remember because funds are on the blockchain when you move funds.. they move..

one thing to be aware of is that some software/services have custom "change addresses" so if one piece of software has randomly produced a second address for the change to be received on. that is then only linked to a private key stored on that single piece of software/service. so remember to back up your wallet you sent from AGAIN after you have sent funds because the change may not have gone back to the original address

You can use a single imported address or a seed based wallet using electrum on multiple machines and devices. All you have to do is restore the seed/ wallet backup files and they'll be available after a sync. Also if you spend on one machine, it'll reflect on the other.
