DDoSCoin: New Crypto-Currency Rewards Users for Participating in DDoS Attacks

Source (http://news.softpedia.com/news/ddoscoin-is-the-crypto-currency-that-rewards-criminals-507256.shtml)

Quote

In the most innovative, weirdest, and stupidest idea of the month, two researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Michigan have created a crypto-currency that rewards people for participating in DDoS attacks.
Called DDoSCoin, this digital currency rewards a person (called miner) for using their computer as part of a DDoS attack.

DDoSCoin works only when targeting TLS-enabled websites
Just like Bitcoin, DDoSCoin uses cryptographic data to provide a proof-of-work. In DDoSCoin's case, this proof-of-work is extracted from the TLS connection a miner establishes with the website they're supposed to attack.

"In modern versions of TLS, the server signs a client-provided parameter during the handshake, along with server-provided values used in the key exchange of the connection," the researchers explain. "This allows the client to prove to others that it has communicated with the server."

Because of this, DDoSCoin rewards miners who launch DDoS attacks only on TLS-enabled hosts. According to Alexa, just 56 percent of the Top 1 Million sites support TLS.

So what do you guys think?  I could see those researchers laughing while working on the white paper.  You can read it here:  https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/woot16/woot16-paper-wustrow.pdf (https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/woot16/woot16-paper-wustrow.pdf)

It may be just kind of a skit or "look at this neat thing we can do with blockchain" but all in all it's a pretty cool application of blockchain tech, advancing what we can do with it, coming up with new ideas..

Do I want to buy the coin? No, well maybe if I saw a pump coming. But I like their work, nifty..

Edit: Could you make a coin "proof of node work" and make it the more work your node does the better you mine? Even make it to where you could sign up multiple nodes to your miner so you can get credit for hosting more than just 1 node too..

To encourage more nodes..

This is a very funny and odd idea. You'd expect researchers working at universities to be more formal and conforming to certain legal constraints that DDoS attacks can go against. It'd also be interesting to know of the approximate awards and how well their Proof system works in order to distinguish the participators.
The odd coins are usually the ones that do the best compared with the other altcoin currencies that are just clones of other coins (It also doesn't rely on specialist equipment in order to mine so produces a fairer system that way).

Agree. If this works, this will incentivize participating in a corner. While this is nifty, I see too much potential for abuse here.

Edit: corner? T9 got me there, don't know what I really meant to say. But since DDOSing is illegal, this obviously wouldn't work. I will admit I would probably participate in certain botnets if this existed and was lucrative, but like most of these, doesn't pass my test enough to click buy on an exchange.

"BUY" a coin ?

Why would i "buy" a coin anyway ?

Shouldn't the goal be to "acquire" coins ?

I made many thousands of dollars and i never had to "BUY" 1 single fucking coin.. ever.

Trading is a sport man, you get to an exchange and you don't care what is moving you just want to get in and move with it..
I don't even care to know the name of what I'm trading half the time, just the ticker..

I have nothing to do with any coins dev team creating anything that has anything to do with how any of those coins work.. If they were a premine or ipo ico no premine sha pow pos I DON'T CARE, i had nothing to do with it.. All I do is provide more liquidity in the market..

All I see are the charts and the books.. So no, I have nothing to do with any ponzi fest. Those are the guys that have to create their own opportunities to trade, by making/manipulating a scam coin..

I don't have to do that, I see the opportunity on the books infront of my face and take it, doesn't matter what the coin is or what its called..

PROFITS damn straight.. BTCs its all about the BTCs and collecting me more BTCs because that is the only way I know how to do it.. If it wasn't for trading I probably still wouldn't even know what a BTC is much less have any..

"BUY" a coin ?

Would i "buy" a coin anyway ?

Shouldn't the goal be to "acquire" coins ?

My goal is to "aquire" bitcoins..

For the record I have never once in my life bought any type of crypto with any sort of fiat money.. Never..
I made and make ALL my BTCs trading and here on BTCT (no not scamming)..

When I "buy" any coin it is just to "sell" moments later for hopefully a higher number of BTC in my account.. That is all..

I even like some coins, but I hold ZERO altcoins, only BTC, unless I'm in the middle of a trade.. It's all about the BTC and making more..

I don't know what method you have for making "many thousands of dollars and i never had to "BUY" 1 single fucking coin" but it sounds good..
I don't know if your talking about working a job to make thousands of dollars or talking about making BTC or what, but whatever your niche is man have at it..

I like BTC and I like to get BTC and I do that on the exchange so if I am the reaon you quit crypto I don't know what to tell you because I don't see anything wrong with what I do..

Besides where would BTC be without all the traders? You think it would be even usable without the huge liquidity that all the traders provide? Don't you like the fact that you can sell 1,000 BTC and the price doesn't even flinch? You can thank the traders for that..

this is a real coin or a joke? because in some countries could be "illegal" due the local law (like an instrument to offend property...or make some damage).

True, I did not understand how it will look like in practice.

It sounds silly.
DDoS IPs usually get banned by many internet providers. Why would anybody risk that for some cents?

wouldn't it be better to just build a network with Decentralized DOS capabilities? lol? Or just a use a botnet ? Maybe someone should make an Eth DAPP for this ;)

If I didn't see VOD's repost on this coin then i would of just passed it by without a second glance but now I see it is something for real and someone mentioning the new botnet got me thinking about how this could be just that. :-\

I think I saw this concept already being proposed as a sidechain of sorts. In any case seems like a pretty trollish way to develop a currency. If used in good manner it would be cool but I expect a lot of trolling like people trying to DDos legit websites.

There is actually nothing "funny" about it.  After all, in the classical economy, we do see the emergence of weapon manufacturers too.  We see armies (mercenaries, and paid by states) which are economic entities too.   In as much as a decentralized economy will develop, there should also be a weapon economy.  Hell, why shouldn't there be specific networking and crypto tools for "distributed armies" that kill in the real world ?  Why not have DAO-like structures that are "armies" with distributed ownership of attack drones, killing people, and rewarding the entity that did the killing upon verification of death ?  Distributed automated soldiers running on smart contracts.
That would be a mightily powerful army because no hierarchy, no points of failure, distributed, secret and just potentially present anywhere.
We might see hidden battles between power groups and distributed armies, without having the slightest idea of what is going on, and why entire cities are exterminated.

I still don't understand the rationale behind designing a token for what the public perceive to be negative concept unless I don't understand the real world use of the token

On the contrary, this is a very interesting concept.  DDoSing a site is in general difficult to do, and has to be done using intrusion in other people's systems, because there was no incentive to DDoS a site at the demand of someone else.  With this kind of coin, one is creating a market for on one hand people interested in attacking a site, and willing to put $$ on the table, and on the other hand, people with machines capable of performing part of a DDoS attack and willing to gain some $$.    This is in fact not a coin, but a kind of smart contract, where you can buy DDoS power against a site you want to target, or where you can gain money by attacking a site someone is willing to pay for.

There is no needed "value perception" because the value is in the performance itself.  It is not so much a coin as it is a smart contract.

Who gets targeted and why ?

Title: Re: This is funny. DDoSCoin :)

Who gets targeted and why ?

The victims will be targeted by the people paying for the attack.  It is like a mercenary coin.  If you want to put money on the table to get a victim attacked, you can get it your way.
The next version will be "murder coin" I suppose...
