Title: Math riddle my 8th grader needs help with?
Post by: MicroGuy on August 17, 2016, 02:30:00 AM
My son was asked to use the number 4 in a math problem 16 times so that the result equals 5000.

So far the closest we've gotten is 5004.

The problem can only contains 4's.

I've put my math team (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=289686) on it, they did 8th grade twice IIRC, so naturally they should have an advantage.

4444 + 444 + 44 + 44 + (4 x 4) + 4 + 4 + 4 = 5004    :D

4444 + 444 + 44 + 44 + (4 x 4) + 4 + 4 +4 = 5004
4444 + 444 + 44 + 44 + 44 - 4 - ( 4 x 4 ) = 5000

4444 + 444 + 44 + 44 + 44 - 4 - ( 4 x 4 ) = 5000

My son is very happy. He got to stay up late AND has the solution! Thank you.  :)  :D  :)

4444 + 444 + 44 + 44 + (4 x 4) + 4 + 4 +4 = 5004
4444 + 444 + 44 + 44 + 44 - 4 - ( 4 x 4 ) = 5000
That's cheating. He said using only the number 4, not the numeral 4. Here's what I came up with:

((4/4) + (4/4) + (4/4) + 4 + 4(4+4)) x 4 x 4 x (4+4) + 4 + 4 =
(1 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 4(8)) x 16 x 8 + 8 =
(7 + 32) x 128 + 8 =
39 x 128 + 8 =
4992 + 8 =
5000
