Title: Which risers or power supply are you using?
Post by: TheKoolaider on August 23, 2016, 12:32:42 AM
With the issue of sata/molex cables for risers and other components getting hot/melting/catching fire.  What have you done to avoid this issue?  Do you have a different power supply?  Do you have molex to molex for power?  I'm curious.  I bought r9 390's for having fun and testing, but I'll be returning them for 480's.  The sata/molex cable I currently have with the riser I'm using does not feel hot with the 390's and I've been mining for ~1.5 weeks, but I feel that will change once I have the 480's running.

Would anyone like to share their experiences or advice?

Cheers.

First thing, don't use the power cables they provide - I have custom cables made by Sidehack.  He does a great job and it isn't that expensive, but you have total peace of mind because they're actually the right AWG.

Otherwise most of those USB3 risers actually will work - just make sure that the power supply you're using has a rail that's powerful enough to supply the juice it needs.  Personally I use server PSU's, and do my own step-down from 12v to 5v, and there's effectively just one power plane they all share.  Much simpler and using much higher quality components.

 riser I use

and PSU

haven't figured out how to hock it up to a breakout board and server PSU yet , and feel safe using it that way.
I guess I'm luckily no heating up yet .no Burt molex etc .

I use the same power supplies. Pricey but super reliable, I love them.

I use a couple of Lepa MaxBron and I'm very satisfied of them. I pick random risers, USB and non-USB on Amazon, just by the reviews and the look of the product.

I use USB risers and also the blue ribbons ones.
Personally, I have experienced a lot of problems with all the risers that I have. At that moment I thought it was the risers, but the problem were the motherboards that I have. So I bought ASROCK PRO BTC H81, and all the risers (except 2 of them) are working fine.

So, just like Redrose said, read the reviews, compare the prices and voila.

Best

I use the Corsair 1200W AX1200i power supply. It is platinum power supply and shows the power input and output.

Just do not use sata to molex power adapter, its weak and they are low quality not suitable for RX480, connect molex directly to USB riser
Also do use 2 molex max per rail, to not overload your PSU cable rail

On the market there are some better quality sata to molex adapters but duno if they are good for ~50w which rx 480 can pull sometimes

With the customer AMD RX 480, you can use those SATA to molex power connectors as the requirement from the PCIE slot is lower.
