Title: Whats the difference between all the graphics card names?
Post by: Bitcoin Swami on June 12, 2011, 09:34:08 PM
I'm trying to find the right cards for mining but I'm kinda going nuts.  Whats the difference between diamond, sapphire, ... for example I'd like to buy a 6970 card but I cant figure out which name to pick.  Is there a whole lotta difference?

When mining Brand does not matter for mining only the lowest price for the specific model
unless you will be overclocking and in that case you might want to stick with the ASUS brand

Look through the post history of user "carbonc" ...he created a great spreadsheet on hardware comparison. Color coded and all that.  :D

Hi,

that's the link mentioned by Crazy: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=9674.0;all

The most important rule: brands are completely negligible (only guarantee may vary). The graphics chip is important eg. HD5870 or HD6970. Check the link above to see the best price/MHash relationship.

The number is the GPU chip, the 'name' is the manufactures version of that chip/board, with their own tweaks/cooling gear, custom ram whatever ...

yep, but for mining only the chip has priority. Memory, Tweaks, overclocking is irrelevant. You can overclock each card manually. There are so many differeny (easy) ways. I wouldn't spend money for that. Fan will be loud anyway, therefore in my opinion this is also not a criteria.

I most agree with you, you just said it perfectly.
