Sorry folks, I'm pretty sure the top is finally in, and we're probably heading into long-slow-slide round 2.  I hope everyone had fun.  If the MtGox* exchange rate does exceed $100/BTC in 2013, then I'll give 1BTC each to the first two people to post in this thread who have a post count between 20 and 300.

*I'll count CoinLab too, if that ever becomes a thing

I'm even more bearish than you are, but the current dip is just a wave 4 of a larger final blowoff wave 5. It needs one more spurt up to new highs to complete the entire pattern off of the 9.77 low, and that's when the real crash will begin.

So: not yet.

The recent drop as 100 was approached, followed by the rebound is also a DEAD CERT indicator that support is more than substantial enough to burst thru the psychological 100 resistance barrier, we will see $100+ within days if not hours.

Proudhon, although I disagree with pretty much every word you write, I admire your consistency. I'm quite confident that you're putting up a (very enjoyable) show though, you could increase your credibility by substantiating your statements.

You're assuming he will pay out, and that he won't anonymise the coins somehow. The more pertinent question is why is someone who has been predicting downfall, fire and brimstone since the early $5's own any bitcoins at all  :D

I think it's too early to call the peak. We'll be wiser after another week. Next week averaging below $70 would be a bearish sign, above $80 would be bullish in my book.

I think Bitcoin has simply gained too much traction in the last month now to stop snowballing. It feels like we've hit critical mass. Surely you've noticed whenever the price dips it rebounds back up within hours. That is a very good sign.

What sealed it for me was when Bitcoin forked and the price recovered so quick.

I predict a slightly bearish weekend, especially since it's easter and banks will be closed. Come Tuesday, I expect Bitcoin to come exploding out of the gates.

At some point Bitcoin is going to enter into bubble territory. I'll worry about that in a few months time.

Also, all my promises have been paid out.  1BTC each was sent to the addresses that Kalinka and Crazy posted on the first page of this thread.  1BTC was sent to the address that smoothie sent to me in a PM this morning.

Finally, sure, this all seems very exciting, and it may seem like the egg is on my face, but I still think we're around the top of a giant bubble and that the price will crash very hard soon.  It's just difficult to say exactly when, but I can't imagine the price staying above $100 for very long, and once it moves definitively back under $100, I expect a very long correction.

The overall price of bitcoins depends on its use. I have seen a few different analysis that put the price supported by transactions (buying/selling goods and services, simple remittances, etc) at around 10 USD. Speculation without any actual backing economy would have the price bubble up and go back down to under 0.01 USD. People using BTC as long-term savings, however, the price just depends on how much people want to save in bitcoin, so the total money supply could go up at least another couple orders of magnitude.

I suspect that most of the current rise has been driven by speculation, however, there have been people putting their capital into bitcoin, and people running bitcoin based business leaving their earnings in bitcoin. So while I believe the price can go down quite a bit from where it is at, it does not have to go down. It just depends on if the savers and earners can get their money into bitcoin as fast as the speculators are pulling out.

Possible, although it's always risky to predict the short term. I am convinced though that people will find out Bitcoin is to be preferred over an ordinary savings account, and once they do, banks, hedge funds and other institutional investors will come to the same conclusion. While it is indeed possible that we may experience another boom-bust cycle, I believe that the boom part may come very soon and will be very large.

With the verification line at 8000 + for gox I would say tomorrow and the next couple weeks are going to be bringing one hell of a boom!

This number in line is a huge indicator.

It's mainly known from people at http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/ mentioning it. They did work through the whole weekend at MtGox though (kudos to them for that!) so the line is hopefully somewhat shorter now. Once these people are verified it'll take some days before they are able to get fiat on the market, looks like a new batch is coming in as we speak.

Word from several posters on Reddit is the MtGox line is now over 9,600. Someone else on Reddit says they've noticed they move up about a thousand places in the verification queue per day.

You just need to say that we won't exceed $1000/BTC in 2013, and soon enough it'll surpass that.
