Title: Mac Mining
Post by: baritus on March 29, 2013, 12:29:36 AM
Hey guys,

I have the new Macbook Pro Retina 15", I was wondering how I could get a good miner going? GUIMiner and DiabloMiner don't want to work.

You're more likely to burn out your machine than succeed in mining anything.

I got cgminer tweaked to GPU mine litecoins (which is supposedly more profitable at the moment) at about 24 kh/s on the same Macbook Retina.

But probably still doesn't make much sense to burn out such a nice machine if you're paying for electricity.

Thank you for the advice.

I have free electricity(included in rent anyway).

Maybe a 4x FGCA board that can do 3000 Mhash/s is a better investment? It would cost $1500 to set it up.

I just started mining using Bitminter on an iMac, do I have to worry about the same issues? Quad i7, 12 Gb ram, Radeon HD 4850

I've the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB but I don't think it makes a difference, mac is just not made for it I guess.

Hello baritus,

please do not mine with your mac.
It could damage your hardware, it is not designed to run over a long time at max load.
Also it is not profitable, really not worth to risk something.

Maybe your electricity is free, but you will still wear out your hardware and that has a cost too. In the end, ASICs can create bitcoins for so cheap that for everyone else, it's a better value to just buy BTCs on the market already.

To mirror the above comments - I wouldn't mine on a mac. I mined with a few iMacs a year or so ago and even with decent power management, they're not designed for such intense applications. Also the unibody macbooks don't really lend themselves to easily replacing the GPUs...

Not worth it at all.  I mined on a Mac Pro tower with 8 cores and a GPU and it wasn't even worth it.

Any idea why I'm getting this message using cgminer on Mac Mini Intel HD Graphics 4000 768 MB ?

"All devices disabled, cannot mine!"

You will never get any on a mac like that - get yourself an ASIC

I'm mining on my iMac while waiting for my ASIC miner. Get ~80Mh/s. Not worth it at all but still good fun.

Here is a informative guide on Mh/s expectations for different GPU hardware.

I also tried mining on a Macbook pro Retina with CGMINER and didn't get very good rates so I abandoned that option.

definitely get an ASIC if you're serious about mining . . .

The only thing I ever got to work on my MacBook was Bitminter.  Check it out!  I didn't mine for long because I could not get a lot of coins, but it was fun to learn about and see what my machine could do.

Good Luck!

Tried with a Retina, only 30Mh/s, and a really good pan
