Title: I need some help - please
Post by: DumDumb1 on September 02, 2016, 05:48:28 PM
Ok. I will admit that I am an idiot, so I won't need constant reminders here   ???

I wanted to make a purchase using bitcoins. I have never used them before. I have no experience or knowledge. I downloaded a wallet from Bitcoin Classic. While it was synchronizing I used my credit card to purchase $500 of bitcoin.

It has been more than a week and my wallet has not finished synchronizing and I have run out of memory twice. I can erase nothing more from my comp and I don't think my wallet will finish synchronizing. During this time, I have read about other ways of doing this (light wallets, torrent downloads, etc.)

What can I do? Where are my coins or money? Can I possibly get a refund, cancel this download and get the coin in a different wallet?

Help please. I am also technologically challenged.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to respond.

may i know where you're purchase bitcoin? because usually bitcoin transactions cannot be cancelled and because your wallet still not finished synchronizing and then transactions will not showing up yet and i think you will get your bitcoin after your wallet finished to synchronizing and maybe it took more than 1 week

Hi, yes I purchased them at this website: https://www.bitcoin.com/buy-bitcoin. The credit card transaction went through Simplex . So my question is what happens if my wallet cannot finish synchronizing?

Just export the private key of the receiving address and sweep/import it to a light wallet. To get your private key, just follow this instruction (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transferring_coins_from_Bitcoin-Qt_to_Electrum#Obtain_private_key.28s.29_from_Bitcoin-Qt).

FYI, the block chain data are around 60GB. The harddisk space can be cut down to mere 2GB~ with pruning but you'll still need to download all of them.

Quick idea is to cancel the CC payment but lets first investigate what happened but need more info. How did you purchase the BTC ... I mean what service or company?

Don't panic, the synchronizing is not big issue. Key to your bitcoins is so called "private key" ( which is already in your wallet file, you can extract it and import to any lightweight wallet ... so I think there is nothing to worry about )

On an aside note: I received a private message from some one offering to help me if I send them my: wallet.dat or private key.

Is it safe to send them this info?

NO. NO. NO!!!

Never ever send those things to another person. That guy will steal your bitcoins.
I'd ask who the user is but I'm guessing they're only using throwaway account.

No it is not a safe thing to do, you should ignore those PM's. Someone tried to steal your money.
Your private key is everything, safe it with your life, lol :)

Just import your private key into an electrum wallet or blockchain.info

If someone are asking to give the wallet .dat better to dont give that.. you will be scam.. because you can still get your bitcoins there if you can get even the private key to import it to another wallet..

Thanks for all the advice. I feel much better. I was getting ready to cry over my lost $$.  ;D

I will wait another 24 hours and see how the synch is coming. Currently 14 weeks remaining but only about 5 gigs left of memory. Maybe if it doesn't work I will ask for help getting the lite wallet and exporting the key. (Not sure how to do either of this things)

Smooth job, agree with longbob72 ... this was wrong.

ok, give me some red paint.

My red paint has no big impact let's call some real PRO painters ... Vod, where are you?
Sorry mate, but trying this to obvious newbie is quite serious.

BTT: OP you had to find way how to extract the private key from your wallet file. The nuse some lightweight or online wallet to gain back control over your BTC

The memory is not issue. Capacity of you HDD matters ... blockchain is quite big (I have 90GB on my HDD at the moment) and all this you have to download. Do not watch the remaining weeks because it is going to grow slower and slower.

Google and youtube can help you a lot with the private key extraction and if not just come back to us. Good luck.

Yes, I meant 5 gigs left on my HDD. I am guessing that won't be enough since only about 70 gigs used so far.

Electrum is a light wallet too, but you can use also web wallets but for now you can choose any of them.

Have you been able to see your bitcoins in your wallet yet or still synchronizing? and Never share your private key or wallet.dat with anyone.
