Why you was allowed to change your username? AFAIK only vip and donators are allowed to change usernames or is this an old rule and I have missed something?

I hope this is just an exception and will not be allowed too often as it would be easy for scammers.

I had to PM theymos and ask him to change it for me manually.

What did you have to do to persuade him to change your username? I'm interested in changing my username, never thought I would be able to do it. Only know like five users that have changed their names without Donator.

You can ask, but he may not do it for you. I'm sure that he only does it for a specific set of people, those who are high ranking, active, trustworthy, and post with high quality.

 Probably because mods are assigned to sections.  Posts in his sections would show him as mod... otherwise staff

Thanks. I got the position last night. On boards that a moderator moderates, you will see "Moderator". For me, that's in Tech Support. Elsewhere you will see the mods listed as staff (except for global mods and admins).

Wish everyone of us be given atleast one chance to change our usernames.We were newbies when we signed up and wasn't sure if we would stick around here that long so just picked up any random name that immediately came to our mind.Even facebook allow name changed so why cant bitcointalk? Just once 

Which is your own fault. If you didn't want a username, you should have not picked it or dumped it for a new one in the beginnings of your account.

Ah yes, I can imagine how much the admins would love being pestered by every user who picked a name they didn't like when signing up to have it changed. Besides, what's to say that two months after having your name changed you won't want it 'just once more' because you 'picked any random name that immediately came to mind'?
If you didn't like your name you shouldn't have picked it to begin with, or you should contribute enough to the community to warrant a change.

if It happen. then the situation will get very worse... anyone who hack forum account will change usernames. and then recovering accounts for real owners will be almost impossible..
Admins have more sense than You and Me. if you think wisely you'll realise this term is no doubt fair..
 facebook is just a social network. and facebook accounts are almost worthless(in some how) but bitcointalk representing thousands of businesses, companies, projects, and thousands of BTC, Millions of dollars being circulated everyday among bitcointalk accounts..
if everyone can change their usernames then scammers will be totally free to scam anyone..

and people still can request to admins to change their names and if admins want they will change their names too.

And I am Glade to consider myself in those few lucky users who changed their usernames..

There are different moderators for each section of this forum.

YOU don't need to donate anything for changing just your name. but if you donate and become a donator. you'll be able to change your name with lot more features.

To be more clear, in the profile section, there should be a "name" input box. Much easier to do this than contacting an admin.

Only some users will be lucky enough to get an admin to change their name. I suspect it had something to do with his promotion.

If you're doing that, you're likely doing it wrong (potentially excluding local sections).

It's usually a thankless job.
