Ok. I have placed a .1 BTC paper wallet in Iceland last week and I will be putting clues in this thread about it’s location. Iceland is going through changes in it’s banking laws right now after a major overreaction to the 2008 crash. They are loosening laws regarding foreign currencies and I wanted to present bitcoin as a positive for their country and persuade them to treat BTC likewise. Since they have cheap geo-thermal energy and cold weather, they are in a great position to host mines and like any tourist destination it can be a plus for that sector as well. This was all new to the bank people I talked with, but let’s see how it goes and show them some love.

Here is the public address on the paper wallet. You can follow the action when the money moves. In the spirit of bitcoin, there will be few rules and anyone can play. You can even take it never tell a soul. But there is another .01 deposit if you send me a picture. Feel free to share your analysis, spoilers, or go get it yourself.

https://blockchain.info/address/1E481Lk1L1hSb9ZsJu3Smcqtg6tKpVmKcq

Here are pictures of the cache and a copy of the note inside. I will show a wider view tomorrow of it’s location and give more clues as we go. “Winter is coming” so let the games begin!

http://i66.tinypic.com/talfrs.jpg

Quote from: The note in the box
Congratulations! You have just found real money!

The object in this cache contains the cryptographic keys needed to spend 0.1 bitcoin, currently worth about 6600 ISK. If you are not familiar with bitcoin, then you have made another valuable discovery today! You can spend this money at tens of thousands of locations online and around the world. Or sell your bitcoin to a growing community of millions of users at an online exchange.

Best of all, there are no strings attached. I am giving away my own money because I thought it would be an interesting and fun project to geocache some bitcoin. I would like it if you sent me an email telling of how you found this paper wallet. You don’t have to identify yourself, but it would be cool to follow along on your adventure under whatever name you chose. And if you send a photo of the paper wallet as proof of your find, I will deposit another 0.01 bitcoin into any bitcoin wallet you chose. I also ask that you not divulge my email, as it is one of the things that only you know and that proves your find.

What do I do with this thing?
First, remember that the paper wallet has a hidden “private key” that should NEVER BE SHOWN TO ANYONE!!!!! Exposing the QR code and/or the string of characters hidden inside gives a viewer everything needed to move your bitcoin to another wallet.

You can use the “public address,” printed on the front, to check the balance on this wallet by scanning the associated QR code or entering the characters manually at a website like blockchain.info.  Once you have set up a wallet of your own, you should import the hidden private key and spend/give/save/sell your money as you wish.

You and I posses the only two copies of the private keys for this wallet. If by 2018 no one has sent me photographic proof and the funds have not been moved, then I will assume that the paper wallet was lost. I will then move the bitcoin to another paper wallet and hide it somewhere else on earth. If I do receive email proof or if the money is moved, which is also proof someone found the wallet, I will delete my copy of the private key and leave you as the sole owner. That means if you loose your paper wallet, nobody can recover your money. Just like loosing paper money.

Excellent!

Are you gonna pop in to Verne Global while you're there?

Very nice gesture for sure, I hope somebody finds it. I don't think I'll be heading over to Iceland myself in search any time soon though :D

The only time I plan to go that part of the world is to see the Northern Lights one day.

Damn, I like treasure hunts and wanted to do something similar, but on a bigger scale to attract a lot of attention, but I could not get enough funding

to do it. I was hoping to get donations from Bitcoin companies, but they are not very keen to sponsor something that they do not have control over. I

started something smaller on BitBiz.io and it was very popular at the time.  ;D Good luck to all...

I really like the idea of hiding bitcoin private key with geocaching, and combining this with the promotion of the sites or bitcoin related service even may have great impact. And i think this is also good idea to increase peoples knowledge towards bitcoin. However i can't come Iceland to search that bitcoin as it will cost me more than the reward amount to be there.  :D

The wallet has now been funded!

@tmfp
I did not have time to meet with them, but I did see the place passing by. I chose instead to talk with bankers, government, and merchants with what little time I had.

There are a lot of fun ways to do this that I may try in the future. Maybe a system that allows you "buy" clues if you send to the receiving address? That way the kitty keeps growing and the reward becomes bigger. Or a series of small wallets with clues to a bigger treasure. Or a crowd source treasure hunt with small rewards and one bigger one. There really are a lot of cool games we could play.

Stay tuned for more clues tomorrow. Although for all I know someone will see this and say "I know where that is"!

 :D

...

The only other thing that you might have included would have been a note in Icelandic (I do understand that many people in Iceland already speak English).

Still, that's a wonderful idea to increase interest in BTC and doing a little extra to increase tourism to Iceland.

Bravo!

That looks like some sort of chain, possibly connected to a anchor.. so I guess it's somewhere in a harbour.  ::) ... It's also very rusted, so it could

also be a shipwreck of some kind. If this was in my country, that chain would have been collected and sold for scrap metal. I just love this kind

of thing, and it's a pity other people cannot participate, if they not in the area. We should port this to a mobile App, like PokemonGo  ;D ..then more

people can take part.  ;)

That's awesome.  I don't geocache myself, but it seems a very cool thing to do.  Another thing technology has facilitated.

I'm nowhere near Iceland,  so it's not gonna be me who claims it either.  :(

This type of game/promotional event should be more propagated all around the world. It seems like a great way to promote bitcoin and rise awareness about cryptocurrencies.
Plus, people love social games like this. The only problem is founding this project - I doubt there will be many people willing to gift their own BTC for the purpose of the game.

Today’s clue: Lets play hangman! What town/city in Iceland were the pictures in this thread taken?
Post a single letter as a guess and I’ll fill in the correct guesses. Incorrect answers will turn the names of body parts red. When all names are red the clue is ended. Note that the Icelandic alphabet will be used.
First person to post the name of the place where this chained rock is located will receive .01BTC to the address of their choice. I am working today, so I’ll update as often as I can.

This is actually a good idea for people to suddenly know about Bitcoin, because usually if we find a good thing all of a sudden we will definitely continue to remember it. I believe the people who would find it surely will remember this thing all his life, because it's just like finding a treasure.

Ok. twicezeroiszero has been paid. I'm not posting the TxID because some people like to keep their transactions private.
Tomorrow there will be another clue mini-game with another .01 prize.

P.S. the prize has grown with the value of bitcoin and is now worth 7120.39 Icelandic Króna

I think I am not that lucky to join this Icelandic bitcoin treasure hunt. By the way, this is a great idea for those who haven’t known about bitcoin and this also makes some impact to the tourism in Iceland and I think it would be better if your note have an Icelandic version beside English then many local would be able to understand.

Today’s mini-game will pay another .01BTC for linking to a photo of the object that the cache is placed under. You can see some of it in the photos I have posted and the other clues should be enough to find a  picture online.
When I searched using just clues from this thread I found it, of course it helps that I knew what I was looking for. First image of the whole object in this thread wins! I’ll PM the winer and send to the address of their choice. Check your images carefully, once you do you will know for sure if you are right.

Nobody? Well I'll let it ride and add another challenge question. Let's see who is awake while I get some sleep. The first person to post the correct answer in this thread wins .01BTC in this simple goole skils question! After posting in this thread the winner can PM me a receiving address and I will pay within 24hrs. The other online photo challenge also remains open at the moment. Happy hunting.

The paper wallet has a depiction of early Icelandic vikings. Who is the artist of this image?

Wow, one of the people here was damn close, with what I presume was just a guess. It looks like some sort of monument with the plaque on the side. Well I figure that photo will take the price, and people will find it much easier now. ^smile^

This is a good way to promote tourist sites for people to visit, I hope you are going to give us a brief history to educate us a bit, when this is done. If something like this is properly funded, then it will boost tourism to that area.

Nice puzzle!

I was wondering why nobody is talking about the close-up of the paper wallet on top of a map of Iceland . Also a hammer behind it.

Those things should be some sort of clue right? With the wallet pointing at a location where it can be? Also, the hangman should be a hint on the area we are after.

I'm not going to Iceland soon, but I love puzzles! Good luck all treasure hunters.

EDIT: Description from the photographers flickr:

Quote
Chained
An image from Keflavik, Iceland. I'm not sure of the relevance of this monument as I couldn't understand the plaque. I would guess at some sort of acknowledgement of the islands maritime history? I did like the detail in all the rust and how weather beaten it looks. Even on 35mm film the detail still holds up very well.

Camera: Pentax K1000
Lens: Pentax SMC M 50mm f1.4
Film Stock: Kodak Portra 160

EDIT 2:

Another angle of the anchor, more similar to the angle TS used. Don't know how to link to a photo on flickr, so this link will do I guess.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/13527347@N06/3473308948/in/photostream/

Looks like it is on a shore in front of Keflavik

Well, the .1BTC is just sitting there now. Anyone can go pick it up or maybe arrange with someone in Iceland. Remember there is also a .01BTC additional prize for emailing me a photo of the cache.  The clock is ticking now.  Norrisk has pinpointed it on streetview but was unable to figure out what the monument is about. I couldn't figure it out either when I was there, lol.
Stay tuned for updates on the treasure!
@Nobitcoin - The 1909 date was a reprint date I think. I removed it to avoid confusion.

Thanks for the nice puzzle. Maybe the hint to the city came a bit too early though. Next time you may be able to do more subtle hints like pointing the hardware wallet towards the city, etc.

The photos look amazing by the way, really gets me to want to go to Iceland as well. Maybe sometime in the near future I can free the funds and time to go for a trip.

Thanks all for the kind words in this thread. I think I will do this again and include some of your suggestions. I especially like the idea of of online users being able to join the treasure hunt and perhaps provide clues for those who can actually get to the prize. I'll have to come up with a better format in advance. This time I was experimenting a bit.
I hope whoever claims this treasure does send me an email. It would be cool to have a conclusion to the story. But if the money moves and no one ever steps forward then I guess we'll just have to think of him/her like Satoshi.  It could really happen at any time now. :D

Wow, 30 days and nobody collected the money?  ???

Considering how people will solve captchas all day to make pennies, I am a little surprised that this wallet is still there. (Or at least I think it is, the money has not changed addresses). I know that it is not enough to fly to Iceland. Still, there are no rules here and anyone could partner up or something to get a cut of the loot. I will soon open this up to a wider audience by publishing it on geocaching.com.

Geocaching.com kinda sucks by the way.  To publish a cache you have to take a quiz, follow a bunch of rules and wait forever for a reviewer to OK your cache. However once it is done I suspect the money will promptly disappear. So make your plan now and claim your treasure!

Iceland is so remote, no wonder people have not claimed it yet.  ;) ... Cannot wait for this to take off and someone doing this in my

neighbourhood.  ;D This sparked an idea with me, and a bunch of us {weekend campers} went out and did something similar. The kids

found the treasure within an hour, and it was so popular... we had to create another treasure and let them search for it again. Thanks OP,

we had a whale of a time doing this.  ;D

Well, there are only around 300.000 people living in Iceland, so I'm guessing there's only a handful of people actually looking and aware that this exists.

In a few weeks or so, I'm thinking of doing something like this in my own country, Belgium. I think that one might even be found before this one :D

Great idea, how did this fall on your mind to do? Do you just wish to spread the word, or there is some deeper meaning in all this? Maybe you own the shop or cafe that accept bitcoins, so these people will come to your place most likely.
Anyway great thing, I respect your words, at least they will learn about bitcoin if they didn`t know for them before, and they can enjoy playing your interesting game I can say.

Once the upward tick of bitcoin becomes more evident the rush should happen, interesting no one has picked it up though.

Yes, not a lot of people on the island. However there is at least 1 huge bitcoin mine within a few kilometers of the cache.

Will the caches value increase over time if no one finds it?  I like the idea and wish I could get out there to see the beautiful landscapes, amazing photos!   :)
As long as bitcoin value rises it will go up. Even if it goes up very high I will leave it there until 2018. If no one claims it by then I will assume the ocean has claimed it.

Thank you for your kind words. I just like promoting bitcoin. I get nothing back except being part of this revolution in finance. I just thought it would be a fun game.

Could see some one flying over to Iceland now that we have more flights heading there from Canada.
Once the upward tick of bitcoin becomes more evident the rush should happen, interesting no one has picked it up though.
If you fly Iceland air to Scandinavia they have a great deal on a stopover in Iceland, I think it's free. Even if you had just a short layover you could reach this spot with a 5-10 min. cab ride.

Can we have a new one, whilst this one is still running? Hopefully the new one will not be that remote. Did you promote this only on this forum or did you promote it on social media too? The success of this is dependent on the exposure it gets, and how many people hear about this.

This thread stays on the front page for only a few days, when it gets bumped or only a few hours depending on the traffic in this section. It is actually strange that they have not moved it yet to the Games & Rounds section.  ???

I plan on doing this again and in a less remote location. I almost left one in Vancouver last week. As far as promotion... I only advertised it here. I was going to post at geocacheing.com but found out what a ridiculous system they had and gave up after two weeks of trying to get approval.
You also have a point about this being in the games section. I posted it here first because I thought it would go in hours. It later evolved into more of a game.

Iceland's landscape is surreal and looks like it's out of this Earth. I hope to get the chance to visit the country some day.
By the way my family have a trip planned to visit Norway next year in September and we will be going on a cruise to explore the Norwegian fjords. I would love it if you could plant some new bounties around this region  ;D
Jokes aside, I have an idea. Why don't you place new caches in the farthest locations of Europe? Like for example a cache in the northernmost, southernmost, easternmost and westernmost points of continental Europe? I think it will inspire budding travelers to make the effort to find these caches during their travels. Just an idea mate.

100 days and no takers yet!

It is still there just waiting for you to come up with a plan. No strings, no rules. Just take it and it's yours.

I would not be surprised if it would take more than a year. Iceland is not densely populated and the probability of an Bitcoiner from Iceland becoming aware of this thread is pretty low. And just booking a flight to Iceland to search for $ 80 worth of Bitcoin is not an attractive option by now. Maybe when Bitcoin surpasses $10k it will become more attractive for foreigners as well.

Maybe you should consider announcing your hidden treasure on other platforms (reddit or Bitcoin news sites) as well. That would increase the probability of search and discovery. This thread has just been read about 1600 times - that's simply not enough exposure considering that many people open the thread repeatedly.

Anyway, great idea!

Don't worry, it won't be there forever. The second this becomes profitable for me I'll book a flight and get to have a vacation with your bitcoins paying the way :)

You may very well be right. I was worried it would only take hours and would go too fast, silly me.
Even though there are not a lot of bitcoin users in Iceland there are mega-mines right in the same town as this cache. So I know some people there know about it.  Where are they?
Maybe I will announce this in some other places. I was hoping that someone here would get it though. In any case it will be there until 2018. Unless the sea claims it.

lol, yes. I am keeping it there even if it rises in price to a million USD.
You may also want to look into Iceland air if you fly to Europe. They have a layover deal that let's you stop in Iceland. Since this cache is only 15mins. from the airport you could grab it with a cab ride. You may even be able to walk there.

You sir are correct!
However it may not be a great idea. Here is why.
I have a copy of the private key that controls this balance. The reason I kept a copy is in case this is never claimed. It could be destroyed by the ocean or weather or whatever. If no one claims it by 2018 I will assume it is gone and move the cache to another place on the earth. At that point it would be very hard to return any additional funds sent to the address. So you would have to commit to giving those funds away even if it means they are moved to another location later. You would also have to trust me not to just take the funds. I'm not going to do that, but you don't know me and blind trust is not a bitcoin value.
 :)

If you remove the funds from that address, you should leave a note/message to inform people on why this was done. Yes, it should be

removed if it is unclaimed for too long, but just in case someone does find it and access that address... then they will know why it was moved.

In future, when you do this, I would include a message with the stash, to tell anyone that this treasure has a expiry date.  ;)

If you post this on geocaching.com it will get found pretty fast I think, most caches there don't last more than a couple of days, even in some pretty remote areas.
I've done this a few times myself. Too bad I don't live in Iceland :)

I tried but got very sick of their system. It requires weeks of waiting for confirmations and a stupid set of rules about how the cache needs to be set up. After like three weeks I gave up and deleted my account. It was serious ridiculous. They would ask how I will "maintain the cache". When I wrote back that this a one time thing and I can't do that, the response would take a week and be "how will you maintain the cache"?  ::)

One year left!

As per the note in the geocache I will move the bitcoin if it is unclaimed by 2018, one year from today. I think I will continue to offer a small reward for finding and photographing the cache after 2018. As far as I know the paper wallet is still just sitting there. We can see that the money has not moved anyway. If it goes unclaimed I think I will structure the next game differently. Maybe more small treasures or something fun like multiple wallets with the same private key, so that it is a race to find and move the money.

Main Treasure Unclaimed .1BTC, Main Treasure proof Photo unclaimed .01BTC
Time hidden:     119 days as of Jan. 1, 2017
BTC found:            .03BTC
BTC still hidden:     .11 (Now worth $107.55!)

Public address of paper wallet: https://blockchain.info/address/1E481Lk1L1hSb9ZsJu3Smcqtg6tKpVmKcq

I was wondering if anyone was trying to do this anytime soon with only QR codes.  Geocaching is a unique and a intuitive experience when someone wants more education on learning new things about Bitcoin. Since these things could endure the rain and other whether issues, there shouldn't be any problem promoting/locating.

I wouldn't be that surprised if these things were in every State and Country.

Good Job.

Aww. no. :(  You were definitely in the right spot. It looks like the rock was moved. By a person, the sea?
Well, I feel I should honor the terms of this and wait till 2018.  It is possible that someone took it and has simply not moved the coin. Some person might want totally anonymous money by not revealing themselves and claiming the .01BTC photo proof.
If we get to 2018 and no claim has been made I will move the coin and pay YOU the .01BTC photo reward. You were clearly there and the first one to prove it.
I'm a little bummed about it being gone. I really wanted a complete story of what happened.  :-\

I placed it under a rock where I thought the sea could not wash it away. It is the rock with the x on it in this photo: https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.tinypic.com%2Ftalfrs.jpg&t=574&c=rXGr07XWmRZMww

Interesting that most of the rocks look to be in the same place except the rock which was holding the container.
That's what I see also. Look at this other picture from page 1. I took this just before placing the rock over it. You can see the cache itself. I made it as waterproof as I could. It's in a sealed box with heavy tape over the seal.
https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi63.tinypic.com%2Fizmjbl.jpg&t=574&c=UpH7y-00f06psQ

It looks to me like it should be visible in the photo geschtonkenflapped took. It may still be around there somewhere. It may have been washed away, it may have been thrown out by someone who thought it was trash? It could also be in the possession of someone who took it and just kept the wallet. If so, they have until 2018 to move it to an address they control. Otherwise I will move it to another wallet hidden somewhere else in the world.

I am looking at a crazy game next time. I may hide identical paper wallets on a few continents. Then it becomes a race to be the first one to find and transfer. That voids the other wallets. Although I may offer small rewards for finding the voided wallets.

Let me know if you're interested in having others help with hiding items in other continents as I'd be available for East Coast US cache placement.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I have been away. I will consider your offer as I get a plan together. However I have to figure out a way to do this that does not open the opportunity to cheat. It's not that I would not trust you, but ideally there should be no need for trust and no way to even theoretically cheat.
In any case it will be January before the next cache is ready. I am currently looking at places in Africa. However I'm still in the planning phase.

Anyway thanks for the offer. Perhaps there is a fun role for you in some crazy game. When that time comes I can send you a PM in any case. I also want to see someone find these caches and tell the story.

I have heard about this activity about 4-5 years ago, when geocaching was not so popular.
I was very interested about the idea of looking for real treasures, that different people have hidden across the city, and the suburbs.
I even wanted you buy required equipment, but I have dropped this idea a little bit later, and I sometimes regret it- it would be a great hobby for me!

Usage of bitcoin for such a game is a great idea, it may reward all those people who are really willing to look for it, and the bounty is really attractive!

OP, wonderful idea and great spin around the concept of geocaching. If you ever do this "crazy" game, I may be able to help placing it either somewhere on the southeastern tip of Asia, or on the island of Borneo (I'm from there and return every now and then) where there is a lot of wilderness.

Having the same thing but using bitcoin just makes sense and is an obvious move so that's great. I hope you guys are enjoying yourself. It would be great if you could place a game over the map to make it even more immersive. Like VR GPS.

And to anyone who may have found the cache, remember to mover it to a wallet you control by Jan. 1st. If it is not claimed I will be moving it to another remote place on planet Earth.

I believe it was either washed away or destroyed/taken by someone who has no idea what it is. The rock was light and placed so that a person climbing up or trying to slide down could unintentionally move it. A bitcoiner would've moved it to a private address right after finding.
I really like this game, wish more people would play and make it worth it for us to make a race for it. I'd love to take part in a real treasure hunt one day, especially in Europe.

I never heard of this type of game here before and I am looking forward to participate on it when it's near to my place. This is actually a nice, fun and profitable idea.

Hey all. I am having problems reaching user "geschtonkenflapped". He (I think he?) is the winner of the photo part of the contest and has .01 bitcoin coming. I let him know all this earlier but now as the end approaches his account seems to be inactive.

geschtonkenflapped where are you?

May I ask exactly where in Africa?
No, lol. I can't tell you where it is, that's the contest.

I hope that one day you will be visiting the Philippines because there are a lot of treasure hunters here and Bitcoin enthusiasts I am happy because I am actually one of them. ;D To be honest majority of the enthusiasts here in my country has financial problems as in so I think this game is a really big help to each and everyone of us and to whoever will find the cache. I never heard of this type of game here before and I am looking forward to participate on it when it's near to my place. This is actually a nice, fun and profitable idea.

Thank you for your kind words. I will take a look at the Philippines!

That is a good point that I did not consider! I guess it needs to be sturdy enough to last a year but degradable enough to not last 10years. Thanks for your suggestion.

Also I got in touch with geschtonkenflapped. He has been sent his prize money.

An altcoin should come out and do this. Varies places around the world should have thing hidden in them and that is how they distribute the coin instead of an ico. It would take the whole communities input to work but I think it can be done. Its just you need people to pyhically hide things which could be a problem. Maybe you know of a cool idea for this someone? It would be new and refreshing to altcoins. A lytral treasure hunt bounty. ^^

Those silly heights may be whats needed to bring in a larger crowd of people and really make it a race. Good luck!
Thanks man. If Africa goes unclaimed and the price goes way high I may make the next destination under the Ocean somewhere.

Hopefully in George, South-Africa to be specific. I will find it :-)
