The only possibility for an amazon machine to make any money would be a micro instance under the free tier for the 1st year. This means you'd get about ~10khash/sec for 1 year. So you'd waste an amazon instance to earn about $10 over the course of a year.

Sooooooo, I suppose it's not impossible. But as soon as you're out of the Free Tier, it'd be worthless.

pekv if you do want to use cloud computing for mining, there are some niche cloud services that give you high-end performance, but they are expensive. You would have to really play the market and make sure the value of coins you can mine is always more than the cost of renting servers

Basically anywhere that let's you rent high performance computing, so I guess maybe "cloud" is wrong. I know University of Illinois had a service back at their supercomputing center a few years ago, not sure if they still offer it

I'm looking at putting a few spare LTCs into some LTC Pyramining stocks on Cryptostocks once I've mined a few on my laptop, might be worth looking into as an alternative.
