Title: if a block was mined every 2 min?
Post by: kokjo on March 30, 2013, 02:14:22 PM
if there was a block mined every 2 min, how would the difficulty change when the network tries to adjust to 10 min intervals? exponentially?

i know that its not likely to happen, but i am just wondering.

Simple math would suggest the difficulty would go up by a factor of 5.

Doesn't LTC basically do this already (i.e. blocks at around 2.5 minutes)?

no their network are defined by having intervals of 2.5min.

im talking about increasing the mining power 5 times every 2.8 days.

and to answer my own question: yes, it will go up exponentially

Sorry - I must have got confused - but glad that you worked out the answer - are you suggesting that Bitcoin should be changed to allow for quicker mining of blocks?

no not at all. i was just wondering what would happen to the difficulty if some crazy dude with tons of ASICs was to mess with us, and put all the blocks 2 min apart.

i don't about all the 51% attacks, panic and other stuff. i was just interested in the difficulty.

Factor 4 is the maximum the difficulty can grow,
an adjustment of +300% already happened in the summer of 2010.
