Title: BSOD on new mobo - RX 480 (custom fw)
Post by: zangakkar on September 15, 2016, 03:59:52 PM
Hi all,
I found a custom ROM in ethereum forums and I've been trying with my old motherboard and everything was fine, then I decided to migrate to a new motherboard with 7-slot. But no matter what I did, I can't get rid of BSOD after 5mins of mining. Here are some info about my setups.

New Setup:
MB:MSI Krait Z170A 3x
CPU:G4400
OS:Windows 10 x64
Drivers: 16.7.3 OR 16.8.2-rc4-aug11 (patched atikmdag.sys)
Miners: Claymore (getting VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE with this miner) and Genoil (gives DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error)

My old flawless setup:
MB:Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional
CPU:AMD FX-8350
OS:Windows 10 x64
Drivers: 16.7.3 (patched atikmdag.sys)
Miners: Claymore

So just incase, I tried these;
- mining with single gpu gave me same result
- I've plugged my new SSD to my old computer, it was mining fine. so the problem is not related with softwares on new setup. it must be related with cpu or mobo.
- Disabled all CPU features from BIOS.

Any idea? I'm really tired with trying combinations to troubleshoot the problem. thanks

first off  did you use a stock rx 480 with stock bios on the rx 480.

for all you know you may have a
bad mobo
 bad ram
 bad cpu

or all could be perfectly fine and they just won't all the modded bios for the rx 480.

your modded rx 480 bios works with AMD cpu +AMD mobo

your  modded rx 480 bios does not work with INTEL CPU + INTEL CHIPSET MOBO

try a stock rx 480 bios if it works your bios is not compatible with the intel gear.

Just tested default bios and it's working like a charm.

memtest passed.
cpu seems fine on stress test. (used prime95)

The difference with stock bios and modded one is huge. I need to get this working on this mb. I don't think motherboard is bad since it's working fine with gpu's default bios.

One more thing, GPU-Z doesn't show gpu or mem clock even with default bios. It was normal on old mobo.
Edit2: I got "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error while mining with 1x rx 480 + 1x r9 390 (default fw). (This is the same error I'm getting with custom fw. after that miner restarts itself and I'm getting bsod)

1-flash back the original bios
2-remove amd driver , Display Driver Uninstaller :  http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html (http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html)
3-reboot
4-install newest AMD driver with 1 card connected to your mobo : http://support.amd.com/en-us/download (http://support.amd.com/en-us/download) dont have to deal with patched atikmdag.sys anymore from driver 16.9.x
5-reboot
6-turn off the pc
7-connect another cards
8-turn on the pc
9-WAIT WAIT and wait a few minutes till win 10 assign the driver to another cards  sometimes its take 5-10 minutes ,  Screen flickering is normal during this time
10-Dont reboot the pc till win 10 assigning drivers to new cards , if you do win 10 driver install going to fail , if you can open wattman without any error , all cards get the driver , then time to restart
12-dont change anything under wattman , get claymore miner , make sure you created the right bat file and let the rig run for a few hours :)

You missed a few important item from your "Here are some info about my setups" what VGA CARDS are U using exactly ( Brand , memory , reference card or not ) ? what modded bios u flashed to what card ? I hope u not flashed a reference card bios to a non reference card :)
