Title: Working overseas need a hobby. Advice XMR rig? Free power.
Post by: expatguy on September 20, 2016, 03:22:25 PM
So I'm working overseas for the next year or two in morocco and need a hobby. I dable in btc and eth trading but would like to mess around with mining for fun and maybe make some beer money?

I have a company apartment so my electricity is included but I have kinda crappy bandwith. I've been reading on these forms for the past few days and have come to the understanding that Monero is the way to go. Right now I'm running Miner gate on my laptops for fun when not in use but that is obviously not ideal and is just over working them.

Is there some sort of build guide with expected hash rates? Is it actually profitable do build a dedicated machine/s for low volume. I feel like the advantage I have is essentially free to me power. Will bandwith limit me?

Also I'm still not really clear on CPU vs GPU mining for Monero.

Cheers in advanced for any tips/advice.

Hi,

GPU - consumes more power but gives you more hashrate
CPU- consumes less power but gives you less hashrate.

Personally, i would mine with GPU-us:
AsRock H81 Pro BTC,
Ram
cheap CPU
6 GPU - (AMD - 380x, 480X)
Risers
SSD (or a flash drive)
PSU 1200W (or two with 1000w and 450W)

The rig will cost you around 3000 dolars.

With 3500 h/s you'll make around 0.9068 XMR

Keep in mind that the difficulty will increase.

Good luck,

That is way too overkill for what you want.

I have items sitting in my Newegg shopping cart that will run 5 GPUs no probem for ~$240 shipped. (Not including GPUs obviously)

Also the whole power issue. If you are in a crappy apt then you may not have the AMPs needed to run the stuff.

H97 Anniversary
Intel G1840
FSP PSU 1200W
6x RX 480 ASUS OC Dual
8gb Memory
120 SSD
Windows 10 Pro
Risers
Aluminium to build the a cage
+ delivery charges

Came to £1600 GBP

So in USD that's about 2100.

3500 h/s stock. Rumoured 4800 tweaked

In case of free power, get 380x's, you'll consume more power but will generate more hash rate through lesser investment. If you want the rig to be efficient, get the RX 480's or GTX 1070's.

Do you prefer a custom built computer system or ready-made computer system? If you want a custom built, see the suggestions above my post, if you want ready-made, go with Dell Precision T7500.

Free power often is limited in how MUCH is available - at which point a multicard GTX 750ti rig might make a lot more sense for XMR (240H/s with GPU-Z indicating 56% TDP used at consistant 100% GPU load is nothing to sneer at given the very LOW TDP on those cards).

I AM curious about 1070 hashrate on XMR though, haven't seen ANY figures to date just "doesn't work" complaints.

All the  info given is wrong in that they are trying to set up an open air 5 or 6 card rig for you.

Don't do that for your first rig.

Build a simple two card rig in a case.

I would offer to sell you a mobo, ram, cpu, cooler, loaded hdd/ssd but shipping to Morocco is meh as I am in the USA.

Get two rx 470 video cards

https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Radeon-470-GAMING-PCI-Express/dp/B01JQA0AEK/ref=sr_1_4?

get g4400 cpu

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Pentium-Dual-Core-G4400-Processor/dp/B015VPX05A/ref=sr_1_1?

cheap 120 gb ssd

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=sr_1_1?

get this mobo it will allow for a 2 card build in a case and can become a 3 card case build

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASRock-Z170-Extreme4-Skylake-Motherboard/dp/B012D7HBTA/ref=sr_1_1?

this psu allows for exspansion
https://www.amazon.co.uk/EVGA-Modular-Power-Supply-Active/dp/B017ROGC12/ref=sr_1_1?

1 stick of 8gm ram
https://www.amazon.co.uk/HyperX-Memory-Skylake-Compatible-Previous/dp/B00TY6A56U/ref=sr_1_2?

lastly if you go the case route find a case that has 8 slots to 10 slots to fit the mobo and allow for 3 cards.

that mobo will do 3 cards with ease. I am mining on it now.

having it all in a case simply looks better and in your case may be more secure.

I used amazon uk  to list the gear .  are the  prices  good I do not know.  the gear is all owned by me and is good.

I like to mine with windows 7 pro.
I use claymore  dual for Eth
I use claymore cryto for XMR.

THE BUILD ABOVE cost me about 750 usd  850 with a case  so 750 usd /44mh = 17.05 usd case less

add a 3rd card 950 usd add the case 1050.  950 usd/66mh = 14.39 usd a mh case less

A six card fully open rig with asrock

6 x 200 = 1200 for cards
1 x 50   =     50 cpu
1 x 40   =     40 ram
1 x 40   =     40 120 gb ssd
1 x 90   =     90 asrock mobo
5 x 12   =     60  risers
1 x 190 =     190 1300 watt evga psu

1670 plus 30 for a diy wood case so 1700 for about 130 mh hash power stock rom  that is 13.08 usd a mh

if you compare the builds my build caseless at 3 cards is 14.39 per mh vs 6 card build at 13.08 usd per mh

plus the mobo is good for any purpose vs the asrock miner mobos in six card rigs.
