What OS are you using?  I'm running on a 6-core, faster Xeon, and my rate is way below yours (OSX).  Are you using SSE or a GPU to get these rates?

I'm getting about 6,000Khash/sec with a 6-core, 3.33GHz Xeon Mac Pro.  I tried the -4way switch but it didn't seem to help.

Just want to make sure I understand this correctly.

The next hash that the Bitcoin client running on my old single-core laptop has just as much chance of solving the block as does the next hash performed by a miner running on the most souped up GPU-aided hardware out there, right?

The only difference is that the number of attempts by the miner is an order of magnitude or greater than the number of attempts by me.

Is my understanding of this correct?

Your understanding is correct.

But the difference in number of attempts between your laptop and a souped-up GPU is enormous...

Thanks for the stats - I used the posts above in this thread to compile a table at https://www.bitcoin.org/wiki/doku.php?id=bitcoin_miners .  Some data is missing, please feel free to edit.

Here are two additional statistics:

Model name    : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU       M 450  @ 2.40GHz
OS                : Microsoft Windows 7 x64
Client version : 0.3.17
Core speed     : 1197.3 MHz
Multiplier:      : x 9.0
Hash rate       : ~1800 khash/s

Model name   : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
OS                : Microsoft Windows 7 x64
Client version : 0.3.17
GPU clock      : 550 MHz
GPU MHz       : 933.000
Miner            : m0mchil's OpenCL
Hash rate      : ~48,000 khash/s

I apologize for the lack of other information; I am not a computer-savvy person. However, if other members could define the needed specifications or explain how to obtain additional precision, I would be glad to provide the data.

On a side note, my i5-450M seems to have a lower hash rate than racerx's i3-350M. Is there an optimum parameter for the processors that I should use to obtain higher hash rates?

are you sure that you are using all cores?
~800 khash/s seems like your using a single core only.

you can also try jgarzik's cpu-miner (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1925.0) with the 4way-switch, to squeeze out some more hashes, it doubles the hash-rate on my AMD X3 720, not sure what it does to your i5 though.

Thank you; I set the parameters to use all of the cores available and the client started to obtain ~1800 khash/s. There seems to be a large fluctuation between the hash rates, though - the range of the hash rates is 750-1800 khash/s.

Code:

CPUs
Model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 980x
OS         : Microsoft Windows 7 x64
Client     :  bitcoin-miner 0.10
Core speed : 3333 MHz

Model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 980x
OS         : Microsoft Windows 7 x64
Client     :  jgarzik's cpu-miner
Core speed : 4405.6 MHz
Multiplier : x 33.0
Hash rate  : 19200 khash/s

Model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 980x
OS         : Microsoft Windows 7 x64
Client     : 0.3.17
Core speed : 3900 MHz
Multiplier : x 27.0
Hash rate  : 8701 khash/s

GPU

Model name : 2x GeForce GTX 460 in SLI
OS         : Microsoft Windows 7 x64
Miner      : m0mchil's OpenCL
Core speed : 795 Mhz
Hash rate  : 102000 khash/s (sum of the two)

and this is unbelieveable...

Model name : ASUS ATi Radeon 5870
OS         : Microsoft Windows 7 x64
Miner      : m0mchil's OpenCL
Core speed : 875 Mhz
Hash rate  : 299000 khash/s (!!)

I'm surprised that the 6-core AMD is getting great numbers.  It's beating the pants off the 980x.  I'll try compiling the bitcoin client with the microsoft or intel compilers.  The intel compiler should definitely generate much faster code.

EDIT: Update.  Using a CPU miner with 12 threads I got the CPU to pump out 19200 khash/s using the 4way algo.

EDIT: Update.  Clocked the 4.4 Ghz system back down to 3.33, and started using bitcoin-miner v0.10.  Big performance improvement.  Also update GPU performance to reflect what I'm currently seeing with m0mchil's GPU miner.

my guess would be the 4way-switch, improvement on Phenom II X3 from 3800 to 7200khash, it just wasn't available/useful for windows until jgarzik's cpu-miner came along.

updated my CPU-table above.

You're right.  I jumped to 19000ish once I started using the 4way algo of the cpu miner.

However, it's still nothing compared to the 5870.

amd64 debian linux 5.04.  Just running the vanilla bitcoind binary. All my stats were in full numbers so its about 15000 k/hashs per sec.

Nice work! Cheers :)  will update my typos.

I don't do CPU generating anymore, but those who do may be interested in my experience.

I got 5200 kHash/s from an intel i5 quad core using the standard client. But when I compiled my own client from svn (without tweaking any optimizations, or even stripping the binary) the rate went up to 6500 kHash/s. This is on Fedora 12 Linux.

I'm a completely newbie. I just downloaded the bitcoin client, and I set it to start generating coins. How can you even see hash rates? All I see is the number of blocks ticking up.

It won't start generating until it has all the blocks downloaded. There are currently 118935 in total.

I Can't edit the wiki at : https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison although i created an account there so I'm posting here regardless of looking if anyboy else has posted a sminilar CPU

BTW: Great tool for CPU specs : CPU-Z !
