Sorry to tell you, but for all those people asking "when Bitcoin is going to die" or "Bitcoin will be alive in 100 years?" or "will it be replaced by an alt?" need to realize that Bitcoin will have a lifespan longer than everyone in here combined. Bitcoin will keep evolving and adapting and going beyond all its struggles, and it will become the currency of the universe. Bitcoin will be the currency used in the first planet that we colonize to transact with us, and from there sky is the limit, it will spread across the universe as the human race spreads colonizing other planets. Bitcoin will be the de-facto trans-planetary currency, the universal mean of exchange thanks to it being based in math. We will find ways to launch nodes in space, we will find a way to connect everything into the same interplanetary economy. In the year 100.000, lots of humans will live in tons of different planets and we will have ways to send and receive Bitcoin from planet to planet across the galaxy.

We are the pioneers of the universal currency, so you should feel happy about that.

Nice thread jay, personally I don't care if bitcoin 'dies' at some point as long as I get rich from it & enjoy the fruits of my bitcoin investment until I, myself die ;D

Bitcoin does have the potential for this, only time will tell, sadly we won't even see how it ends up.

Let's stay realistic, this is probably not going to happen. I can agree that Bitcoin is original , however Altcoins keep popping up from time to time , so unless Bitcoin start evolving , It's not going anywhere because Altcoins are getting more and more sophisticated. Let's take MaidSafe as an example , I'm not sure how Bitcoin could compete with it. If MaidSafe could indeed offer what they are claiming , Bitcoin won't have any place in the market.

we'll see. bitcoin today compared to the bitcoin of 2009 is very different so the one in 20 years is gonna be incomprehensible, let alone a century. there is a possibility that someone here will still be alive when the last bitcoin is mined in 2140 or so. let's hope they spend the last satoshis on a drink remembering everyone who made it possible.

Maidsafe the new decentralized internet they say ? Well didn't we had ethereum claiming a few months ago that they are giving us the way internet was intented to work and what happened ? A big hack which made a lot of people forget about them as I am speaking now.

There will be not much different with Maidsafe coin, soon some hacker can hack it just like they did with eth and dao. Bitcoin so far is being maintained in a really good way and it's protected by the laws of universe. Bitcoin will be with us and altcoins cannot really compete with it.

This sophistication you say maybe good but maybe also turning many people down as they are not as save techy. Bitcoin is the coin which any one can use, it's protected until now and not very difficult to understand, different from many altcoins which I am having a hard time understanding what they are for.

Well, I'm totally cool with that.  In fact I would hope bitcoin would live longer than whatever time I have left in this world.  If not, then it'd be a complete waste of time.   I and a lot of other people here are in it for the long haul.

So what is the deepest point here?

Well for me as long as bitcoin is giving me benefits today, that is the most important one. If you look in some deep analysis, bitcoin will prevail even for more years, decades and even centuries to come as long as there are strong community that will support this cryptocurrency.

1) It'll definitely be around as long as the blockchain, internet, and electricity exist. Actually, one question - since you can't see bitcoin or hold it, if no one uses it (Satoshi forbid!) can it really exist. To acknowledge it is to use it and if no one uses it would it not technically have disappeared?

2) Are we really the pioneers of a universal currency? It's no different from the dollar in its reach and we all still have to buy some bitcoin to have some bitcoin. We are pioneers of something though.

Kind of depressing to think about it, but yeah, most of us will probably be dead before Bitcoin dies, and maybe a few people will be able to get lucky and live longer with some sort of enhanced life technology.

It's neat to think about either way, though, there is a lot that can happen still, and we're far from seeing the end of Bitcoin, more than likely.

Yes, so make sure that your relatives or whoever you want your bitcoins to go to after you die will be able to access them. You don't want to unexpectedly die or become brain dead from a car accident and not have included your bitcoins in your will or left a way for whoever you want to inherit your bitcoins to get them when you are gone.

Death of hotmail, yahoo mail or rediff mail did not kill email. Email is pretty alive and kicking with gmail.

Core may kill bitcoin core, NOT bitcoin. Bitcoin core is nothing but the most widely used node+wallet software at this moment. Bitcoin users will shift to better alternative software as soon as they are available.

This is true if you consider the alts and future iterations of Bitcoin are all based on this one idea of a way to send value long distance without a trusted third party. The concept of Bitcoin probably is timeless.

I don't expect the Bitcoin we are using today to be the digital currency people use 100 years from now any more than I think all of you are driving a Ford Model T.

I feel that the inevitable continued advancement in Computer Science will means that Bitcoin in it's current form will die out. Though another form of Bitocin should replace it.
The parts of Bitcoin exist in other digital currencies, so in a way, if an altcoin does do better, then that is part of Bitcoin (most coins use the same wallets and same installation files, just the name, algorithm and value that are different).

this is XK end of the world scenario yet has nothing to do with bitcoin! as well, unless the so-called aliens picked the bitcoin out to heir, how would the bitcoin lasts longer than us. ??? i want a solution for.

Well i do hope it will be happen, where i can pass all of my coin to my children and to my mychildren next generation, and i am sure bitcoin can last that long, if all of the user want to cooperate and using bitcoin for good things, it will be cool if we can transfer bitcoin between galaxy  ;D

We dont know what might happen at bitcoin or any crypto on the next years, the bitfinex and mr gox they made the price of bitcoin going down, bitcoin has a great community and keeps growing. But say it will be forever or will stand after we die its not being full realistic, all things that born will die someday that nature of life.

I like the way you are thinking and that kind of thinking is what is going to bring bitcoin to more people.  Once people realize that there will be no death for bitcoin, then they may start actually investing in the currency, boosting its value.  Tell all guys!!

Bitcoin is a type of currency, just like hotmail was a type of email. Bitcoin users could shift to an alternative software or that alternative software could be an alternative coin.

If bitcoin price keep on falling we can't say bitcoin is dead till a single bitcoin node and few miners keep on supporting bitcoin network. And even when price will be so low (which i think will never gonna happen now) there will be few people still mining and running nodes because even on that time mining could be profitable because lots of miners may leave due to low price which will decrease difficulty significantly.

Bitcoin is self balancing its network as well as difficulty making it to live forever.

do not let anyone happen again. had enough experience over the past. we must remain able to maintain the stability of bitcoin on the world market.

that's just it. those things are only offers. most of the time they never see the light of day or nobody is really interested in them.

i am not so familiar with this particular coin but in my experience a lot of coins have come and gone with claims about the best features and competing with bitcoin!

Wow! with the statement of yours it is actually very impressive  to know the vision of bitcoin to anyone here in bitcoin world. I also believe that bitcoin will exist for a long long period of time even I reach the peak  of life that I have in this world. And I'm happy to be involve in the community of bitcoin.

Nothing is Forever everything has an end so i prepared already myself if Bitcoin will die, I don't care when will it die but as long as its good and alive today, i will make the best out of it until i can. So when the day that it will die then i will not regret anything because i did what i can out of it.

I think you are in an fairy tale world. why do you think that there are other creatures after us, human being, who will use bitcoin? why are you so sure that there are intelectual creatures out of the earth? do you have any proof?

besides, human being can live only on earth. we can't live in another planet. so I think your words don't make any sense. one day bitcoin will die as well whether we all here die first or bitcoin.

Everyone reading this right now will be dead before Bitcoin dies... and probably before it becomes alive so that it CAN die.

Of course if this speculation made by OP came true, it would be nice. It would mean that our sons and grandsons would be filthy rich if we will give them the bitcoin we accumulated. Personally I don't care if bitcoin dies or lives or just have a stable price in the future the important thing for me now is that bitcoin continues to give us the benefits we are experiencing today and the ease it gives us in online transactions continues in the future.

Agree with you in toto.Most bitcoin haters are rumours mongers who want bitcoin price to fall so that they can buy cheap.

I don't think that a Bitcoin who has a limit of 21,000,000 coins will live/exist on what you think it will do. For instance we have use gold,silver,bronze coins as terms of payment did it last for a thousand years? No they were replace by trading of commodities and now paper money. Bitcoin won't last if all the government unite and make Bitcoin identified as illegal money.

I think there are still things that we cannot foresee as of now. Back then, we didn't even know that it's possible to communicate long distance. There will always be new discoveries in the field of science and technology, and maybe even something that would massively affect Bitcoins.

You can't just conclude that we will be the pioneers of the universal currency because we don't even know if there are other living things out in space. OP's reflection of Bitcoin's potential is too much, imo. He's even talking about intergalactic trades.

So basically for you , everything will get hacked except Bitcoin ? Honestly , this is something that someone who haven't an open mind would say.
I don't think you should compare it with Ethereum , MaidSafe developement started 10 years ago , and their first funding got 6$ million dollar in a matter of hours . The project is not only promising an awesome way to store private and public data but also encrypted emails , without forgetting the browser that should be more secure then ToR itself. Overall , I don't see who wouldn't use that. (anyone who cares about his privacy should). I'd advice you to check the website and forums for more info , you may find it interesting then you might think.
Bitcoin and MaidSafe are two different things but If we speak about the number of users then once again I think MaidSafe will surpass BTC .

What you are saying is true, but the planets part is strange and will probably never happen.

do you think the dollar of the 1700s has much resemblance to the backroom workings of the dollar of today? same thing'll apply to bitcoin. it'll have the same name but maybe you'll be able to send it faster than light by then.
