Title: Oct 2: another ethereum attack?
Post by: nerdralph on October 02, 2016, 11:36:03 AM
In the last 24hrs, the network hashrate has dropped by over 10%, and the uncle rate has more than doubled.  In the past, this behavior has been associated with network attacks.  However I don't see any announcement on blog.ethereum.org.  I checked monero and etc values, and there has been no jump in price that would entice miners to switch away from eth.  Anyone know what's up?

I have no idea. I was thinking about the same thing but since the diffulty drop was less big, I thought it was just a batch of miners that moved.

i really don't know because i am not mining ethereum, i only hope that the rate is back in 0.023 btc like before or even increase in 0.03 btc so i can sell my eth for good profit. i hope that the network of ethereum will fine and don't get any attack like before.

Yes there is an attack.
Itīs the fourth if my count is right during the past few weeks.

Yeah, it's a new attack contract. Though this time the blocks are still processing fine and the slowdown is less than 1 order of magnitude compared to 1.5m gas of regular usage (edit: at least, 1.5m gas of regular usage at the time I made the measurements back in 2015; the VM has been further optimized since then), so I am not worried. Once we optimize this one a bit more I personally would feel comfortable advising miners to start raising the gas limit.

Edit: fix here https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum/pull/3067".
