Title: Another major blow for illegal bitcoin shit - CEO of BackPage arrested!
Post by: DGulari on October 07, 2016, 03:44:37 PM
Carl Ferrer of BackPage which uses bitcoin - up to $3.1 million in one week as a payment means got arrested for sex trafficking of a miner and will be sent to California for prosecution.  He could get life in prison just like Ulbricht.

Just like bitcoin was the payment system for Silk Road, it is the payment system for BackPage.  This is just about as big in many ways.

Miners are being used for sex trafficking now? Damn, the technology surrounding Bitcoin is really being used for some dark shit.

Sorry for making this joke though, since it really is a serious topic. If he's guilty, I hope he'll get what he deserves.

what has the crime got to do with Bitcoin ?

All of the things Backpage uses to accomplish their deeds, including the schemes put in place to exchange money, have to do with it.  Bitcoin is used by Backpage, at least partly, because of its unique attributes to advance the crime of child sex trafficking.  Just like Silk Road which could not exist without a payment scheme that had these interesting aspects such as easy transmission on communications networks, BackPage exists at least to some extent because bitcoin permits the exchange of money on channels that cannot easily be closed.  Visa and MasterCard stopped their payment channels under pressure from some fucking cop.  But this can't be done with a network like bitcoin.  Therefore, it has a lot, a whole fucking bunch to do with bitcoin.

This is the first time I have ever heard of BackPage. Apparently it's like a shitty version of Craigslist marketed towards people posting somewhat illegal ads lol. Can you buy credits with Bitcoin on BackPage or what? Why would the CEO be involved with Bitcoin? What am I missing here?

Religious zelots made credit card processors drop backpage because it has prostitution ads, instead of shutting down they went bitcoin.

Starting to think these arrests around/relating to bitcoin are actually not as bad a I once used to see them.
Bitcoin has so many aspects of the wild wild west that it is going to attract a few people with moral issues, but the fact people are getting prosecuted may give new schemers pause.
For a well it felt like any kid with a laptop could pull a heist/scam and have no potential spray back for their crime.

Now more on the discussion topic. This almost looks like a setup to take the guy down. It seems if you have issues with the government you better keep your pecker in your pants or face the music. How many of us ask for Id for a one night stand?
Not saying I sleep around either but I know/knew girls that looked a lot older than they where. One girl when I was a kid was stripping at the age of 13 and you would never guess she was that young.

I often grapple with my view on this as I believe in a open world for everything to be done. But I have my limits like a lot of us do and mine is hurting those that can not afford it and kids. So I can not truely say I am for a open concept on the internet, knowing that these gross things go on. Beats me up knowing I have a fault thinking on this and unable to come to grasp with a solution.

Was going to say the same thing.  Never heard of them before.

I would also like to have it on record that whores and drug dealers take cash and have since the beginning of sex and drugs.

if he is a kiddy fiddler then he deserves to be in prison. no matter what currency he uses.

bitcoin is not some magical currency that relieves people of having to be moral, legal, ethical people.. if you do something that harms another person you deserve to be locked up

Haven't checked backpage before just check and found it a cragalist site and gone through few adult services ads and found there are some regular new ad of escort service and i think it is allowed to have in cragalist site but for what reason the owner now being charged for sex trafficing found still unclear. There is some more detail explanation about this story over here hard to get any clue regarding reason or evidence behind this arrest http://reason.com/blog/2016/10/07/charges-against-backpage-ceo-listed

You apparently missed a lot my friend. BackPage is huge and when other payment options, like VISA & Mastercard pulled out, Bitcoin

stepped in, to help the people doing business there to keep their doors open. We had people actively training people every day to use

Bitcoin to fill that gap. See this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi1rMnDINz4
