Post by: Chronobank on October 12, 2016, 08:13:02 PM
UPDATE: The site is back and working. Blockchain team released a statement via Twitter, which has been added at the end of this article.

If you are fascinated with the idea of digital currency, then you might have heard about BlockChain.Info.

It’s Down!

Yes, Blockchain.info, the world's most popular Bitcoin wallet and Block Explorer service, has been down from last few hours, and it's believed that a possible cyber attack has disrupted the site. The site is down at the time of writing, and the web server reports a bad gateway error, with a message on the website that reads:
"Looks like our site is down. We're working on it and should be back up soon."

With more than 8 million Digital Wallet customers, BlockChain is users' favorite destination to see recent transactions, stats on mined blocks and bitcoin economy charts.

people must stop using web wallets and start searching for safe alternative because there is no website is safe from being hacked and I am sure blockchain will not compensate any one got hacked in this attack if there is any

Atleast i don't lost access to my bitcoin during downtime yesterday as i have download private keys of my bitcoin addresses. And i think in this way we can keep on using our bitcoin in situation like this. All my funds turn out to be still safe when blockchain came back. But this is big lesson for me too, to not store all of my bitcoins in blockchain wallet only. Alternatively i am using electrum desktop wallet too.

The website may get hacked but not necessarily the hackers will have access to any of the data since to best of knowledge I know they don't store any private keys on their servers.Unless you've not backed up your private keys, you should be worried.Web wallets are much more reliable for daily small amount of transactions if you're lazy to open up the desktop app for every second minute.

Everything has a chance of getting hacked, what if your pc is hacked? The users like me who doesn't have more than 5 bitcoins at a time and want to send less bitcoins like 0.02, 0.05 or something like that, many web wallets provide transaction without mining fees, which saves some money for us. So if we want to use some hardware wallet, again we need to buy that.

So web wallets may not be completely secure but its solves many purpose. You theory states all exchanges, trading platform are unsafe to use. is it so

Blockchain users passed few hours of panic after Blockchain had announced the hijack of the DNS, over 8 millions wallets were inaccessible, if a small procedure made the crypto community horrified for few hours, I magine what will happen if the Blockchain wallet get hacked for real.

Nothing would happen. If you read the comments by the CEO of blockchain.info,he said the hackers can never have access to the database where the private keys are stored since it doesn't exist. And hence gentlemen, blockchain.info warns you several times to back-up your wallet because they can't help if you lose your credentials.

You know when people will stop to use web wallets... When they lost their money ;) Until there, people will still using...

If you have a large ammount, just use a paper wallet. If you have a small ammount, is better using the pc, if you pc are infected, they will steal your money from webwallets too, just keep your machine clean ;)

This is not the first time that this would happen and probably not going to be the last unless proper security overhaul of the website is done to make it human to ddos attack and the rest.

This is the thing commonplace happen to websites, not only blockchain.info who have problems like this as long as there is no information that the attack are dangerous, just can wait until the site is back online.

Is is my imagination or Blockchain.info has a lot of problem with DNS lately. Earlier this month some users reported site is down for them too.
My advice: if you still want to use blockchain's wallet and be safe - do a copy of your private keys and store it on your local machine, it will be enough to ensure your coins safety.
