Title: What mobo would you recommend for 6 x GPU mining
Post by: mewhoyou on October 13, 2016, 01:32:19 PM
Hi,

Need an input on which MOBO should be use for mining. Been looking at Asrock Pro BTC. What would be your recommendation?

I think ASRock H81 PRO BTC would be a winner in this category. There are also some threads of people describing their experience with it.
Relatively cheap compared to what it's offering imho.

Also, check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3iup26oUN4&feature=youtu.be  (he's talking about scrypt mining , but should not be different for any other algo - hardware wise)

ASHrock  H81 PRO (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81%20Pro%20BTC/)and ASHrock  H61 PRO (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H61%20Pro%20BTC/)  MOBO H81  (http://cryptomining-blog.com/581-choosing-a-good-motherboard-for-a-gpu-mining-rig/)even alt coins it can mine depends on your set up what will you gonna do it or how you gonna build it. It also handle 6 cards.

I run both the asrock H81 pro btc and the Asrock Anniversary H97 and they work well and are cheap.

I am placing a large order tomorrow to get the quantities required to fill out a few large mines as Asrock has decided to stop general production of both these mobos.

Definitely ASROCK H81 Pro BTC.

H97 Anniversary it crashes some times.

Both the H61 and the H81 are very good. But both are being discontinued. So if you cannot find them, you have to buy the H97.

H81 PRO BTC should be your choice. In my opinion, there is no other motherboard which works solid with mining with 6 GPU's other than this.

However, if you can lower your graphics card number to 4-5, there are a heck of choices available for you.

For my second motherboard, I took an ASRock B85, and so far I'm satisfied of it. I would recommend it to you, as it is like a newer version of the legendary ASRock H81 Pro BTC.

i have a few pro gamer mobo but unfortunately it could not power up more than 4 gpu as well... it would just not boot up. I guess the dual psu might be the issue. Will try to get a gold 1200 or 1000 and try it out.

If you still have a detection problem after replaced the psu , You likely need to short the PCI-E presence pins. It's all motherboard dependant ....  you need to short pins A1 and B17 .
When you asking for help try to give us a little more specific description about your setup , not just like "i have a few pro gamer mobo but unfortunately it could not power up more than 4 gpu as well" :)

Hey check this one http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3434#ov it suppots 7xGPU i just googled and found this one however i would suggest your to go for ASROCK (Its on first reply on this thread by ajareselde) its more reliable but if you have less budget for mobo the go for gigabyte mobos.

Those 7 slots MB are too expensive and not very profitable for mining. It is better to use the Asrock motherboards.

Yeah , that motherboard was around 600$ 6 years ago :-) As of today , it's a hard to find board , used ones is still around 3-400$ on eBay , if you are lucky , and can get your hands on one , you likely need to short some pciE presence pins to get 6 or 7 gpu to work .

Gigabyte mobo should be more expensive than asrock right?

Thanks for the info.. i have multiple old mobo's... they are running on 775 sockets with x4 pci. So i will need to short via the method you showed and plug the risers on top of it? will post the model up later. As i recall one of them are even running on DDR2 :)

"So i will need to short via the method you showed and plug the risers on top of it? "
Yes  , but there is no guaranty it will work . You have to play with those mobo's a little bit , have to find out which PciE you need to short , might need to short just 1 , might need to short all ... It's all motherboard dependant ....

There is a topic started 5 years ago about "List of motherboard that require shorting pin A1 B17 for pci-e 1x to work"
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=36061.0

of course this is not the complete list

It's all motherboard dependant. Some motherboard don't need presence shorting at all. Some need only 1 or 2 slots shorted, Some need all of them shorted. You will only need to short the slots that have the detection problems though. My EVGA 790i Ultra SLI motherboard needs all the slots shorted to detect cards on 1x risers. My Asrock 890GX Extreme4 only needs the 1x and the middle 16x slots shorted. My MSI Z77A-G45 has 7 PCI-E slots. Only 6 can work at the same time; 1 pci-e slot turns off entirely if the adjacent 1x slot is populated, and the 2 middle slots require presence shorting as well.

What I use for a wire is find an old molex to SATA power adapter (or any other adapter with similar wire thickness and you don't plan on using it), and cut off about a 4-5 inch long piece of wire. Strip off about a 1/4 inch on each end, and use your finger to bend 8 strands of wire off to the side; cut off the rest as close to the shielding as possible. Twist em together and insert each end into the proper holes on the PCI-E slot before you plug in your riser. When plugged it, they should have some resistance on being pulled out, though likely won't be much. You should be able to insert almost all of the bare wire into each hole if you cut it appropriately short.
