Title: How do I give BTC away?
Post by: chubogo on October 13, 2016, 01:42:36 PM
I want to give the smallest practical amount of BTC to friends and family to introduce them to it.
What is the best way to do this?
What are the smallest amounts that can be sensibly transferred?
Thank you.

You can print paper wallet from bitaddress.org and give them printed paper wallet containing bitcoin address and private key. And also guide them how they can import those private key to online wallets and use those bitcoins in address. I think 0.001BTC could be considered as good amount to give away as fee is like 0.0001BTC around per transactions.

I am very moved if you will do it. But it will be better yet, before you give Trial BTC better you introduce some things that could give them a btc manner. So the trial btc that you provide only to give confidence to them that bitcoin is real and credible

I'd suggest keeping a backup copy of the paper wallets, and sweeping them yourself if the BTC hasn't been claimed in 6 months.... No need to throw coins away ;)

you can plan to introduce bitcoin with your family on a special occasion by gifting each member few bitcoin in the form of QR code along with a user manual. then too can elaborate about the money in family gathering and advantages of bitcoin. they will really love it.

I would suggest that you create online wallets for them with either Coinbase or Blockchain. From experience, explaining to non-techie people how Bitcoin works and asking them to download a special software to receive the Bitcoin is just too complicated. With an online account, they won't need to wait for the Blockchain to download every time, you just need to show them how to send and receive Bitcoin from their wallet and that's it.
I'm not sure what the smallest amount you can send from Coinbase but I imagine it would have to be 30k sats (around 20c) or above. Also, you don't pay any transaction fees when you send from your Coinbase wallet  :)

i think it will be a good idea if they install bitcoin wallet in their android phone if they have and you can send bitcoin into their wallet. while you transfer, you can explain to your family and your friends about benefit of bitcoin. i don't know about paper wallet because i am not using it. i only use bitcoin wallet in my android phone.

I think it's best to give them a paper wallet and show them how to get those coins on the Mycelium app or something like that.
It's an easy process and will look pretty cool to people who don't know about this kind of stuff.

But I would send like 0.01 or 0.02 BTC, something that they can actually spend.

i agree with you because i also try this once, i did introduce btc with my brother and i allow him to create our local btc wallet after explaiing how btc works and how to receive and send btc i gave him .01btc and allow him to try converting it with our on currency from then after he seen big possibility of investing with btc he immediately buy some of it and now we both enjoying little earnings especially because we both learn alt trading as well.

That is very nice of you. I suggest that you give them symbolic amount for the start that will not make much damage if they waist it (like 0.005 BTC) and you try to learn them everything they know, so this will make their start much easier.

technically you can send them any amount of btc, no matter how small. but the transaction fee is going to be around 0.0001 so it would only make sense for your transaction to be atleast bigger than that, otherwise you would be paying for to transact than the transaction is actually worth.

If your friends and family members are already familiar with online payment processors like pay pal, payza etc a good option for them is to create an account on any online Bitcoin wallet that keeps no fees (Xapo or Coinbase for example) and then you can send them any amount you think it is enough for their introduction in Bitcoin.

this is a very good idea, just make sure that you know everything yourself so you can answer their questions easily.

What is the best way to do this?

there are a lot of ways, most popular one is to give away a paper wallet you made yourself. especially with a nice print and a short help on the back of it about how to spend the coins by sweeping the private key you give them.

the smallest amount (if i am not mistaken) is the dust amount which is around 5600 satoshi.
but you should give something away that has a real value like at least $1 anything lower than that is not even worth giving since they can not really do anything with it.

To send bitcoins to them you need to make sure that they are aware about bitcoins and they do have an bitcoin wallet and should know how to use it or else the amount that you will send will go in vain.

In terms of BTC, I think you should gift them no less than BTC0.10. 1 tenth of a bitcoin is small, but enough to make people understand they have a fair portion of a full coin. If you give them something less it will feel insignificant. People using fiat aren't familiar working with or realizing the value of less than a tenth of basic denomination, e.g., no one sees value in having 7 cents, but a dime or more is something.

Now the challenge is that a tenth of a bitcoin is roughly $60 right now, not a cheap gift! But you could wow them with the amount of things they can buy with just a tenth of a bitcoin.

Its very simple just ask them to create a wallet, or crate one for them and give them access to the password and make them not change it yet until they are fully ready, so in case they abandon it then you can have access to it then make the transfer also dont forget to teach them how to spend or convert to Fiat because thasts equally important and also how make more to the Bitcoin they have already as a result of bonus because that's equally essential.

You can load a virtual gift card with Bitcoin and send it to your family & friends. A lot of festive themes are available for the upcoming holidays. Website: http://www.bitgreet.com/

Also you could print out a festive Christmas Bitcoin paper wallet and give it to your relatives loaded with the amounts you like.

First, you need to create their btc wallet before sending them some part of yours. The smallest amount i think is 13000 satoshi.
Tell them that bitcoin is reliable and it has many use in this world. It can also help them to pay for their needs.
Teach them also how to use bitcoins and better ways to make it plenty hehe or how to invest it in many ways.
That's all I know buddy

Just send it to their wallets.

If you're asking like a philosophical or a philanthropic question, I would say teach them what Bitcoin is. What it can do, it can buy, etc. Thos kinds of things. Go over to the basics and show them the benefits and limitations of the cryptocurrency.

Then, feel better that you did a good thing to your fellow human being and this lifetime. :D

yeah. it's good for those who are the first time into bitcoin using an online wallet because the access is easy.

I use blockchain, but it needs fee to send bitcoin. I'm not sure how much the smallest amount we can send by blockchain.

The Best Way I Think is That You Can Send Him 0.001 Btc Online And then You Tell Them How To Spend and Make Profit From This 0.001 Btc......
The Smallest Amount That Can be Sensibly Transferred Is 0.0001 Btc And the Fees of Every Transaction is 0.0001 Btc......

I do this every Xmas, and they call me the Bitcoin Santa in the family. I create paper wallets, and then I dump some money into that address. I make a copy of the private key, so if they do not claim it in 12 months, I just sweep the wallet or buy something else for them. ^smile^

I include instructions in an envelope, to create an account on one of these online wallet providers and how to sweep the wallet.

if you want to give bitcoin to someone close to you like a relative it is best to set up a wallet for them in front of them to teach them how everything is done live.
i did that with Electrum and for one of my friends and gave him 1-2 USD worth of bitcoin to teach him how it works.

I guess generating few addresses through bitaddress for example and then printing the QR of private key and putting it in an envelope would be a decent way, The smallest sensible amount that would encourage the one receiving it to look it up would be 0.01 - 0.02 BTC IMO.

All members  here are saying the same thing  or suggesting  the same thing . In my own  opinion  you could either  tell them to make a web wallet  for you to able   to pass bitcoin to them  or  you give them a paper wallet which is  good to show  about bitcoins  usefulness and  opportunities on your  family members.

Just make a new wallet using blockchain and send it to them through email, Blockchain being the easiest possible wallet to use and would save them the import private key difficulty, They might not learn enough about it though.

The easiest way to give a small amount would be to ask them to download a wallet themselves and you send it to them. Putting 10000 satoshi on a paper wallet then sending that to another address would just diminish the already tiny amount you would be giving them

Giving away 10% of one bitcoin is quiet a lot for most people. About 64 dollars at the moment.
For most people I do not spend that much for christmas.
A bitcoin advertisement in such a high range just for one person does not seem to be appropriate to me. Even if it's for family.
Unless the givig person is a millionair.

If you were a non-techie person who's never heard of Bitcoin and someone gives you a piece of paper worth ~ $0.7 along with a complicated set of instructions on how to convert your small treasure to dollars, would you really take the time to go through the process? I think most people would just forget the piece of paper in a pocket somewhere. However if you create an account for them and send them at least $10 worth, I think they'd be more likely to try to learn about Bitcoin.

For the oldest members of your family you can give them a paperwallet, but for the youngest you can download a mobile wallet & make the transfer instant, its way more facinating than hand them a paper with btc.. and some strange numbers! ;)

Just note that its very insecure to use such services but it might be OK for your purpose as long as you can afford to loose what you send.

In my experience, i gave my friends some bitcoin about 1 dollars each person to top up their phone and also to introduce bitcoin to them, and guess what they are interested since they don't need to go outside for purchase it, it's really simple just in  single click , however when i talk bitcoin to them for the first time they weren't aware and interest, by giving away i think this is good way to teach them how bitcoin is work. Anyway they used blockchain.info

This depends on your motivation. Are you going to use this btc as a source to make them know what is bitcoins and how this should be earned? Then its just enough to show them your money being in your wallet. And tell them how the transaction happens. Explain them the ways to earn money and the basic requirements to start posting and joining in a signature campaign. I think this is more than enough.

Your generosity should tell you. If you have more bitcoins and you friend is very close then give him around 2 to 3 dollars. Open a wallet in his id. Transfer the bitcoins to his BTC address. Tell him how you earned this amount. Teach him about bitcoins and its benefits. I am sure he should be convinced by all these acts if he is really interested.

Originally I was thinking that printing out a paper wallet would be the way to go, it's safe, just don't keep a copy of the private key or you'll end up in hot water - If you buy a reasonable BTC 0.01 (about $ 6.50 at the moment) they can put it in a safe place like a family bible or the high school year book, something they keep safe, but don't look at all the time.  They can then come across the paper wallet in multi years time and see how much the value has appreciated in those intermediate years.

But then I also thought that you could install a BitCoin Wallet that doesn't download the entire block chain, this way they can experiment with sending each other (I presume you're going to give out to the parents, siblings, children Aunts & Uncles and or cousins all at the one time) the BitCoins.  You can walk them through the receiving their first BitCoins, then guide them through sending each other coins one afternoon at a family gathering.

Then when they've played with BTC 0.01 for a while drop a hefty BTC 0.1 (or more!) into their wallets each and see their beaming smiles when they realise how much you've just given them.

That's a cool way of introducing bitcoin to the friends and family members around you. Once they receive it, you can clearly identify who else is interested to know more. This helps you to help the right person to be a part of the advancement of digital currency network as well earn good amount.

Its up to you. I would suggest you the following. Its just enough to show them your money being in your wallet. And tell them how the transaction happens. Explain them the ways to earn money and the basic requirements to start posting and joining in a signature campaign. I think this is more than enough.

They  wouldnt still engage on  signature campaigns  if  they  dont  know  what  is  bitcoin after all, their interest would  really fade  up  . The  most important thing that you must  introduce to them  on  what  is bitcoin then  try   to make them a wallet  and show  regarding on transfering  funds  in  one  wallet into another.

I don't think there are many technology enthusiasts left in the world that haven't heard of Bitcoin by now. If he has to 'introduce' them to Bitcoin, chances are they're regular non-techie, 9 to 5 people and if that's the case, it is highly unlikely they will want to earn Bitcoin by posting on the forum here. If you just show them how Bitcoin works and how to earn it, they'll probably listen politely and then forget all about it the moment you leave  :D

I want to give the smallest practical amount of BTC to friends and family to introduce them to it.
What is the best way to do this?
What are the smallest amounts that can be sensibly transferred?
Thank you.
Why would you transfer the smallest amount possible? Its useless and it will only end up paying unnecesary fees, I would recommend to just gift them around 0.005 so you don't get broke paying fees, but still giving a reasonable amount?

Craft a paper wallet and put it in a hallmark card.
