Title: Tipping Uber drivers with bitcoin
Post by: TheCableGuy on October 13, 2016, 09:20:45 PM
I started to drive with Uber on my spare time and I am trying to come up
with and idea that promotes customers to tip with bitcoin.

Other drivers say they put a sign in their car that states tips are not included in
fares and are appreciated based on your experience. Maybe I can make
a QR code and post it for them to copy? Any ideas?

Yes, that would probably do the trick. Depending on how much Bitcoin hostility you expect, you could make sure there's a Bitcoin logo on the laminate with the QR code. That depends on your local area, I guess (although you could drive to Bitcoin friendlier locales, it's not like Uber don't incentivise you to roam widely to get fares)

first of all, they need their bitcoin wallets to accept a bitcoin tip, otherwise, how could they even get a satoshi? they could just get an address on blockchain or somewhere, then accept it. and yet bitcoin is not yet popular in uber.

Some Uber drivers are known to print QR Codes and stick them somewhere on their cars... So I guess you can simply go with the trend.

A printed QR code is a great way to send a tip.
Very easy and most people that use Bitcoin will probably have some kind of smarthphone and an app that can send Bitcoin.
Now we just need an easier way for the driver to turn their coins into cash and this would be a huge market that would expand the number of Bitcoin users.

I agree that the idea is good, but I think Uber drivers should be introduced to bitcoin first, maybe with some seminar or any way like that? In addition, I'm also thinking about the passenger, not all people knew about bitcoin, so how do they send a tip if they have no idea if what is that in the QR code (even it has a logo of BTC). If both will not know what bitcoin is and how it works, the idea won't be possible to implement IMO.  ???

Yeap, QR code is a good idea for tips.

Might not be a bad idea, I think it would be an interesting experiment, however, don't make it something that gets in your client's faces and have it be a nice addition off to the side. It might be a good idea to put it at the bottom of a sign you might have already placed, if you have one.

QR code would be a must but expect to not get a lot out of it. And expect to give really good service constantly.

Do you mean turn their bitcoins into cash? That's the exact opposite of what you'd want if you want more bitcoin users. If I want people to use a Canadian Dollar as currency I don't go trading every Canadian Dollar I have to a US dollar do I?

I agree with you, it's can't for happen for directly inside the situation. the customer needs for providing some requirement before and I think this trick just be useful if the driver is wanna trying for teach them before using their service and waiting for several times.

Eh... I don't know whether or not that's a good idea to be honest. If you're willing to take some flak for it if people in your area aren't a fan of it, then go ahead. I personally think it is going to be fairly useless unless you live in an area that you know has a lot of Bitcoin users.

Uber does not accept bitcoin at all.I googled it and I found they just accept xapo debt card as this site  (http://www.coindesk.com/uber-argentina-bitcoin-partnership/)mentioned so I do not see any bitcoin transaction here to say they accept it.

Tipping uber drivers would be really good in helping Bitcoin achieve the most coveted "circular economy". To make people spend Bitcoin, a person must earn it by providing a service, as his or her salary and earn them by selling goods. Bitcoin's adoption problems are not in the spending part, it is in the earning part. How can a massive amount of people earn Bitcoins when Bitcoin paying jobs are almost non existent?

OP's idea is a good one and I like it but I'm sure other people will have other ideas too. So please post them here and let is talk about it.

Exactly! If you earn your bitcoins like any other currency it will already have a value to you. Time is money really, so if you're spending your time offering a service and someone gives you a 1mBTC tip you're bound to use it like any other currency by either spending it or saving it.

They are not charging anything extra, because tipping is voluntary. Nobody are going to force you to leave tips. My kids worked in some restaurants when they were still studying, and the owner stated that they were not allowed to ask for tips, but if they receive tips, they could keep it.

If Uber have no rules regarding tipping, this should not be a problem. ^smile^

" UberTAXI. Your payment when using UberTAXI—which is when you use the Uber app to call a normal cab for you—includes a 20 percent gratuity. You pay within the app and the gratuity goes to the cab driver. "

A QR code is the best idea.

I`m not sure that there are many bitcoin users who use Uber.

Anyway,it doesn`t hurt if you try.

It's a good idea to use bitcoin as tipping at Uber will make bitcoin more famous. But the problem is whether the deal can be done very quickly in a matter of seconds? Because if the payment can take up to 5 minutes and the person is in a hurry I guess that would be disturbing. And what will be many who use bitcoin as a payment tip? Because if you live in an area where the bitcoin is still a bit to be sure there will not be paying with bitcoin or very few people who use it.

I'd be delighted to find an Uber / Grab driver that accepts bitcoin, both as payment and even as a tip. It would be worth a conversation piece while I am travelling to my destination. For those who are still unaware of bitcoin, a small sticker signage or even a die cut one would really get the attention of the passengers and could arouse their curiosity about what bitcoin is.

Couldn't hurt to design a sign with a QR code and a Bitcoin logo, I assume this is allowed by Uber, since it's about the same as someone tipping in cash.

Keep us updated if you've done this and post something after you've received your first tip in BTC :)

This would be the  best way that uber drivers should do  if  they  want to be  tipped  by means of bitcoin.  It would  not  be bad at all but it really depends on which country do you  live if bitcoin adoption is high then for sure this  thing would  be  implemented  easily compare to other  places.

I have never seen anyone in real life that knows what bitcoin is in my country, so I would not expect any of them to know or have any means to accept bitcoin on their phones and they will probably not want to get bothered and just ask for cash, but once governments remove cash they will regret not learning earlier.

Excellent idea! I haven't seen any Uber driver in my country accepting Bitcoin but I'm sure there are customers who would be interested paying with Bitcoin. The easiest way would be to put your BTC wallet QR code on visible place and for Bitcoin using customers this is enough to know that they are welcomed.  :)

I think it is very good idea, and it will give more exposure for bitcoins as all new customers will come to know about bitcoin and its technology and its benefits. But their will be one more problem of using in some country where bitcoin is illegal or no idea then i think this idea wont work for them.

In my country bitcoin is still in no idea of legal or illegal so we cannot implement it.

Wish Uber was settled in here but legal issues seem to be hampering their setup.
Our Taxi drivers are the most annoying people chanting religiously, blasting Indian music,robbing/raping drunk people and always working a angle to rip the customer off. Yet they can lock you in as well, which makes no sense.
The licenses are worth a lot of money and I think the taxi lobby is really putting the squeeze to keep Uber out.

Some form of sticker that is at eye level would be the best trick as most have already pointed to.
Or even ask me about bitcoin sticker,it would open up discussion for those unfamiliar or slightly interested.

I can already see a clever scammer, secretly sticking this behind the head rest or seat of a unsuspected driver, and taking all the tips for himself. It

would be better if this sticker was placed on the dash or the roof, so that the driver would be aware of it.  ::) ... I guess this could be traced back to

the person, who did this... but who will go through all that effort? Still a great idea... someone should carry a sample with them, to show these

drivers.  ;)

A QR sticker would do but if you would like a more permanent solution you could install a case holding a tablet or a plaque on the head rest of both front seats so they will be facing the customers riding in the back. Something like this would do the trick:

http://www.bitcoinquotidiano.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/SF-Taxi-Bitcoin-Ad-mod.jpg

I would put a tablet in there running a Bitcoin tutorial and how people could send you tips. With your QR code in there of course  ;)

Uber won't just deny bitcoin tips, they as an internet company should understand the need and desire of online payments for either tipping or paying for goods and services online. If they are smart they will soon accept bitcoin next to other payment options, because this way they can attract a whole kind of audience.

probably you can promote it on this forum, you may find some custumers.

I do not think receiving tip thru bitcoin breaks any rule. Tips are given out of the generosity of the passenger for the good experience or service. It is besides the fare. If there are a lot of bitcoin users in their community he might get a tip. Otherwise, it is a good way to spread awareness of bitcoin.

You can do that just in case somebody that owns Bitcoin gets a ride from you and to let people know that "Bitcoin" is actually a thing. But if your customer have no idea about Bitcoin, don't even try to lecture them about Bitcoin because they might find it annoying and leave you without paying at all. There's not that much people who's using Bitcoin right now so I guess even if you put that sign, you'll still get tipped with fiat.

You can consider that and see how it will goes. It's free to test and check it after all. :)

But anyways those tip will bring confusion since most of the passengers don't know bitcoin much but who knows they will ask you a question about what bitcoin really is and then it's your chance now to explain the basics while driving them in their destination.

Placing a QR code of your address would really be a good idea. But, this will be a hit or miss on your part. Since not everybody is using bitcoins. So probably, place a tip jar along with your QR code and the statement you mentioned. Everybody knows your local currency hence better chances of getting tips and not just bitcoin tips.

Title: Re: Tipping Uber drivers with bitcoin

I think posting a QR code with an Bitcoin address and logo is a very good idea. However I doubt, you will get a lot of tips, because Bitcoin is still not widely used. So it's clearly recommendable that you state to accept other forms of tipping as well (physical cash).

This kind of Bitcoin acceptance is also a good form of advertising for the currency, because it directly shows the practical utility of BTC. If drivers are confident they can also take it one step further by adding a small information sticker that shortly explains the principles of Bitcoin to those who do not know about it (or only from the mainstream FUD press).

However it's very important that you don't push your passengers to the Bitcoin topic and leave them a free choice to choose other forms of payments. People that have reservations regarding Bitcoin can not be convinced by harassing them with the alleged positive aspects of the currency.

ya.ya.yo!

the problem with this suggestion is that people may not be so eager and willing to tip you with fiat since they are already paying you money but if you put a bitcoin QR code you are showing you use bitcoin and bitcoin lovers will surely tip you just to show their love of bitcoin.

Yes actually if you take tips in bitcoin than it will be even hard for them to track that you have actually got tip, however i don't think there is any rule regarding this in their TOS. Like in resturant also tips to waiter goes waiter's pocket and are not subject to any fees.

Uber takes a % of the fare, any tips are between you and the driver. I don't see why Uber would care if
someone tipped using bitcoin, USD, or apples.

That's right, you don't have to worry because Uber wouldn't care about it. Because it's your right as a driver to be tipped from the customers, and it's also the customers right to give a tip to the driver for giving a good service.

Any ideas?

It's a good idea but I can't imagine you'll get many people paying or tipping with bitcoin unless you're in a major tech savvy city?

Lol why should I tip Uber drivers? Do I tip the train drivers or the airplane pilots?

Well, it's different. You can talk with Uber drivers or share a story with them where you can't definitely do it with a train driver or a pilot. And you can also get a life advice from an Uber driver or even some useful information from talking with them.

Denver. We have a few ATM's around the city so it can't be to bad.

You don't have to tip an Uber driver, in fact most don't. However it is different since its usually a 1 on 1 experience and I am providing a service, if you enjoyed the service you have the option to tip. Also we are not making the money pilots do.

The best and the fastest way it to tip them a bitcoin paper wallet which could be used to spend the funds.

Otherwise tipping in bitcoin can be done only by NFC if that is supported but the driver should have an app and a phone that has NFC.

In these situations it is not recommended to mess up explaining the bitcoin because it can take some time.

your idea is good but I dont think uber will like the idea of you getting tips in bitcoin. Are you in some sort of contract with them?I dont know how they work in your country but here in my country they have deal with local taxi drivers and they have to follow fares set by uber and if some driver charges extra, they revoke their agreement

Uber already get their percentage on the fare. I got this on their help page about tips. I do not think they still get something from the tip the riders are giving the drivers.

You better find out from management before you embark on such a move bro, caz i don't think they'd let you have all the tips alone.

Most of the old guys have no idea about the cryptocurrency like bitcoin but those who knows about bitcoin they could stamp the qr code of their wallet address so that customers could easily tip them with and amount they want.

Yes, it is also very important to note that companies may not allow tipping. What I mean is that some company may have rules that prohibit the acceptance of tipping by its staff. I have seen many companies and restaurants and hospitals prohibit their employees from accepting tips. In such cases it might be a bad idea if uber is one of the companies that disallowed tipping.

To generate your own QR code, use http://bitcoinqrcode.org/ and enter your BTC address, you can also then upload to imgur for ease of access and further use.

Well guys i believe it's spot on but getting uber management's approval will be in the right direction. Since bitcoin transactions are decentralized and open to the public you wouldn't want to lose your job because of peanuts called "tips"

I like the idea of there being a QR code in the car and/or having an option within the app to send BTC to their personal wallet.

Hell maybe I should use Bitcoin as a topic of conversation during my next ride.
