yes, yes he was a scammer...
Never, ever, give out your private key, the first rule of bitcoin, so you did well by not sending it to him :)

AFAIK, there's nothing like "trust points" in bitcoin, the only thing this scammer could have done with your private key is generate and sign transactions using your inputs (in other words: stealing your bitcoins).

Never give out your private key, the fact that he is asking you for it proves that he is a scammer because this not something anyone will ever ask you, not for any reason. Giving him your private key would give him access to your Bitcoin to use anytime he wants, he's literally asking you to give him your money. Good thing you came here first, if you have doubt regarding anything else, always check the forum here. Also if you have any friends who are also Bitcoin newbies warn them about that guy.
Welcome to the forum!  :)

Don't give out your private key to anyone if you don't want to.

Your private key lets you access your account and send money. Just ask for their Bitcoin wallet address and then send the money to it, simple as that.

Fixed that for you  ;)... With the possible exception of giving your keys to your children or being robbed at gunpoint, you should never ever give away your private keys to anybody.

It's not really your account your accessing, in very simple terms, your private key lets you sign transactions.
If you give away your private key, somebody else can generate transactions spending your inputs, and sign these transactions using your private key.
Since those transactions would be signed using your private key, the network would conclude the transactions were valid, so miners would include them into a block, and there would be no way to recuperate these inputs.

There is no such trust point system in blockchain. Someone tried to trick you to get access to your hard earned bitcoins.

Private-key is equivalent to your email id password or your house's main door key. Will you give your password/key to others/strangers?

In bitcoin every person who owns the private keys of any wallet can spend their funds. That's why the private keys of your wallets should be only yours and never to be given to anyone or if given that anyone can spend your coins (i.e stealing them from you).

You did well to not trust the scammer and ask here. This forum is great for every question you may have. Better ask it here first and then decide rather than doing the other way around.
