Title: [CLOSED] Monero Brass Coin Giveaway [CLOSED]
Post by: smoothie on October 15, 2016, 06:51:20 AM
Edit:

As of Sunday April 30th, 2017 at 1215PM Hawaiian Standard Time this giveaway is now officially closed. Any email requests that were made after this time/post will not be honored nor sent.

Any remaining brass coins out of the 1000 will be given away at the upcoming Consensus 2017 conference in person. If you are interested in meeting up with me just email me at smoothie@lealana.com and I can organize a meet up within the confines of the conference.

Introducing the Monero brass coin giveaway. It is a DIY XMR brass coin with TWO holograms marked LASER MARKED “UNFUNDED MONERO GIVEAWAY” or something similar.

https://i.imgur.com/e2FEX7Cl.jpg

This brass coin giveaway has a simple purpose, to get people talking, spreading, and sharing monero with others. It could be used as a conversation piece or just as a tool to assist in educating others on how the technology backing monero is powerful/useful.

Requirements for eligibility

Anyone can request ONE free single brass XMR coin. Send me an email to SMOOTHIE@LEALANA.COM.

One coin per shipping address and per person. Please do not attempt to get me to send multiple coins to a single person who has access to multiple addresses. I will not ship more than one coin to a specific address for these giveaway coins.

I reserve the right to not ship giveaway coins to any user for any reason.

Given that this is a giveaway I will not make a point to hear out any complaints of coins not received as this giveaway is simply that, a giveaway at 0 cost to the receiver. Any number of things can happen during transit and I would prefer to just ship out the coins and not have to worry about who got what coin and who didn’t.

Coins to be shipped via USPS first class mail.

Shipping information in this EXACT to be submitted as follows to my email (smoothie@lealana.com):

FIRST & LAST NAME
STREET ADDRESS
CITY, STATE, ZIP CODE
COUNTRY

How many giveaway coins?

1000

When will they be shipped?

Honestly, when I have time to get them out. It could range from 7 days to 30 days or more . It all depends on how busy I am and how many requests for these coins I get.

Also great way to get people into physical crypto.  :)

Sounds really cool.

I really liked the design of the hologram, it is going to be an epic coin :), keep this thread alive so people can upload some pictures when they get it.

Thanks for the giveaway smoothie,I have already sent you the email.

In my eyes, this giveaway failed before it even began. Good luck to the others willing to DOX themselves for 1 coin.

How does the giveaway fail? It is simply that...a giveaway...

If someone does end up getting multiple coins they would have to fool me into thinking they had only one address but using multiple emails and multiple physical addresses. And even then what will one person make off with? Maybe 2-3 coins?

The person requesting the coin does not have to send me their real name, how would I know it is their real name and thus doxxing themselves in the process?

I'm not into data mining people's info if that is what you are getting at.

It's relatively *simple*, just keep a public list of orders before shipping anything out. Obviously you wouldn't ship for "Lauda" to "Satoshi" if Lauda did not ask/confirm this. This would work for *confirmed* members, but alt accounts could stir trouble with PO boxes and whatnot.

I'm not into data mining people's info if that is what you are getting at.
Rule 1: Never trust anyone.

Good luck with this anyhow, at least it's free.

If people have multiple PO boxes then great they must have enough money and time to try to fool me into thinking they are not the same person.

Secondly I am already ahead of you....SEE BELOW:

Why should I trust you? You shouldn't. And with that, anyone who does not trust me please do not purchase my coins.

Same ^ goes for my giveaway coins. Don't accept free coins, if you don't trust me.  :D

I don't think that many people are going to do that, but yes, I guess some people will get more then one coin.

The only solution is to ask for bitcointalk.org account that registered at least 3 months ago and has at least xxx posts or something like that.

Anyway, I dont think that a lot of people are going to ask for more then one coin, so even if he ends up giving 5-10 coins in total to people who already received a coin, its not a big problem.

I contemplated that, but I thought that it would be simple enough to decipher whether someone was trying to game the system by them using similar address locations (city, state etc). But I wanted to open it up to newbies as well.

It's a giveaway so if some get more than one coin it is as you said, not that big of a deal.

Very smart to do so, to keep it up fair.
I hope i will fit the requirements if rules would be changed.
but in other hand i have 80 posts and 6 months activity, so it is something :)

I think it is a good marketing move.  Imagine getting a thousand interested coin collectors' emails..with the potential for future sales...who just got a free coin.

As for doxxing, isn't that a little over-rated?  As long as one isn't doing anything illegal, does it matter if someone has any contact info?  I gotta be on so many marketing lists myself.

(BTW my first name really is Tom  8) )

Sending email now, Smoothie.  Thanks! :)

I likely won't reply to emails as it would be too time consuming. But if you made a request via email before the coins run out then you should receive it in the mail at some point. No specific time frame as there are likely going to be many envelopes to ship out.

Thanks for the interest

I value my privacy but will be applying to get one.
I have an address that all my mail goes to that has no connection with me and it won't be my name on the parcel.

Do you think the people that purchase goods from the darknet marketplaces dox themselves everytime the receive a package?

I will send my email today, hopefully i can find you pgp key without too much trouble.

I love this.  Is there a decent how-to with best practices for creating the private keys to work behind the hologram?  You're releasing hundreds of these into the wild, this might be useful.

Best tried and true method that I have used was posted here, it's slightly old, but probably all still valid  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.msg8246348#msg8246348

Also, for the less paranoid/technical, this site could be used offline to generate keys etc.

These coins were minted in May.

I've just gotten around to one of their purposes in this giveaway.

The idea was always to further monero awareness.

I love this.  Is there a decent how-to with best practices for creating the private keys to work behind the hologram?  You're releasing hundreds of these into the wild, this might be useful.

Currently they are meant to store the private spend key in base64 format. There is only enough space to store such a key of this size.

I do not know of a publicly released version of software that does this. Although there may be one that exists that I'm not aware of.

The alternative would be to store the hex version of the private spend key (half on one side and half on the other bit that may cause problems when attempting to redeem and get the hologram off of the paper insert.

Looks like there is time so I may end up releasing a version of my software that does this. But as of right now I can't promise that just yet.

As you can imagine just shipping these will take some time.  :)

edit: On second thought you could use a site like http://tomeko.net/online_tools/hex_to_base64.php?lang=en to convert the hex private spend key to base64.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of this site. It would be best to test the conversion and redemption process with a tiny amount of XMR to see if the conversion works. You could even do it on testnet so you don't lose any funds that matter.

Also be advised that using a 3rd party website could allow for keys to be compromised. Do a test... Of course you could possibly load the page, then disconnect from the internet and input your hex string (generated from moneroaddress.org offline) to convert to base 64 then print it and close the page etc.

**Please be advised that I am not offering this as actual advice to use but more as options for those who want to assemble a DIY coin with the brass giveaway coin.

Yeah I was wondering if I could get 1 monero virtually since I don't want to bother you as much as mailing a coin to a sanctioned country and they might think you are helping us to build nuke somehow :) .

I don't know why my addy is too long lol :

Cross-posted from reddit:

Update: Still working on getting everything organized to ship.

Had to order bulk envelopes, making a small paper insert with information on monero and the coin.

Also need to mass laser mark sheets of holograms with "UNFUNDED MONERO GIVEAWAY" or something like that.

And the last thing I can think of which is time consuming is hand writing all the customs forms for international customers.

This is why I gave a timeframe so wide as I had an inkling it would take me some time to get everything moving.

I may have missed something in my list of "TO DOs" but that sums it up for now.

Will update here once I have something to update on.

Hand writing postage and customs???
You need to get some automation set up on this part.
I could process all international orders in 1 morning for you if needed. :D
I use stamps.com and it's quite easy.

My wife volunteered to hand write them all. She thought it would be more personable.

One of the goals of this giveaway was to do it correctly the first time, not necessarily fast.

And also if we used stamps.com wouldn't we would be disclosing people's addresses to 3rd party websites without the consent of the receiver's permission?

Never used that site.

:)
No rush smoothie, i'm sure nobody getting a free nice physical Monero coin will complain about a little shipping delay.
Sounds cool to have a special hologram made for the giveaway coins, great idea and can't wait to get one.

Good day OP!
It's a very nice giveaway.
Is the giveaway still on? Or you have already completed the 1000 persons? And if it still on, am I eligible? I'm from Philippines.

Great stuff. Thank you for this giveaway, smoothie :)

I have been interested in a set of your XMR coins for a good while now, but do not understand monero at all, which has prevented me from pulling the trigger.

This free coin will allow me to become acquainted with XMR - test out how it all works, do some small transactions once I know what I am doing, so that I can the fund this free monero coin with the face value of 5 XMR!

Once I have managed to complete that successfully, then I will be looking at getting a set of the 25/50/100's :)

Your plan of spreading awareness of XMR is working here ;)

Thanks again!

Yes it is free, assuming your address/location allows for USPS first class mail delivery.

Keep in mind that it takes me time to get around to newly submitted coin requests. Your coin may not arrive for possibly 4-6 weeks depending upon how busy I am and how slow/fast the mail carrier is.

I haven't even gotten through all of the international ones as they are very time consuming given the customs forms I've had to fill out and also had to wait in line while USPS types these epically long addresses into their system.  :D

It is only the size of a quarter..or Cas brass to be more accurate. I had envisioned a solid ,. 1oz round, so with that anticipation, I was disappointed of the size...but the free factor quickly over rides all negative expectation... In the end,... I thank you smoothie,... for you generosity....I now own a physical Monaro coin...

Thank you again for your generosity

Got mine in the mail with some imperfections that I'd expect, but thanks for the giveaway anyways! I'll be filling mine up with Monero shortly, and then storing it in my collection. Delivery was quicker and the coin was better than some coins that I've paid for. I expected more people to join the giveaway as well. Well worth the wait :)

Received mine.  Thanks!

Size is about 30mm diameter (might be 29mm).  Like someone said above, I think it would be good if it were bigger but it's still pretty nice.
I've ordered some for gifts and am happy with it.

I plan on loading the giveaway coin after doing a vanity address search and hopefully finding a cool address to go with it.

Would also be interested in single Monero silver coins if they were ever on offer individually (can't really justify a three coin set right now).

An International USPS delivery should take about 10-20 days,it all depends on your country.
Personally I have not received my coin yet ,but the mail here is pretty slow so I could not expect anything.

I think your were confused,as smoothie is not making Monero addresses and private keys.
He just handwrrited the shipping address, not the Monero address.
If you want to add a private key to the coin you can assemble it by yourself.

I guess too or even more than 60 days and it's common in some packages we are receiving here in the Philippines. But no worries since the more important thing is we have a chance to receive it. I don't mind waiting. And this giveaway has limits so whenever we haven't received it here in our country it's fine. :)

Thanks for the giveaway and hoping that I can touch that coin soon.

yes. There is a back log of them to go out yet.

No specified timeline on shipping.

Damn, I just discover this thread. 1000 coins is an epic giveaway.

Nevermind the shipping time, but do you know (roughly) how many of them have been claimed / how many still available?

Is it first come - first serve, or do you prioritise by country (lower shipping cost)?

Are you seriously funding this yourself, or is it some wider XMR community promo project?

There are still giveaway coins available.

It is a first come first serve basis.

Once they run out I will announce it here and change the title of the thread and OP to indicate it in big bold RED letters.

It is purely funded (the project, not any digital value in the coins) by me solely.

P.P.S. By the way, what's the translation of the Hawaiian words around the edge of the coin? I'm typing it as, "A'OLE WAENAKONU - PILIKINO PONO'I - UILA 2016" and Google Translate yields, "Not Through - Personal Identity - Lab 2016" but that doesn't seem to make much sense LOL

Nowhere did I say I would reply to emails for requests.

My Orignal post outlines this very clearly.

There is no certainty, only an attempt to get as many coins to as many different people as possible at 0 cost to them.

Please keep in mind this is a cost-free giveaway to those requesting the coin.

The request is surely demand and OP really have a long time processing those. Plus the fact that shipping period takes time resulting for some email sender thinks that their request haven't got yet.

Hope mine is on qued now. :) I have sent email last November 14.

Today I received your mail with three empty bags and three "what is monero" cut outs. So confused, but thanks anyways...Hard to be too upset since you were so generous with this free giveaway, but I can't believe that all three would have been taken in transit without breaking the envelope seal. Just glad I opted for the DIY version!

That's some crazy shit right there, if the Transit Personnel opened your mail and took the Physical Monero coins after x-raying then glued it back up, then one would assume we have some Trolls that are on here that work in our Worldwide Mail Departments.....

I feel for you buddy as well as smoothie as it was out of the kindness of his heart then some conniving bastard decides to start taking the fun away with Christmas Surprises, it's just as bad as taking peoples money out of their envelopes that they send to their Grandchildren for Christmas.

Yes! Thanks for your PM, just responded! I just don't think it was tampered with, as it would be much easier to simply "lose" the whole envelope and not go to the hassle of taking the materials and having to seal it up again. (not to mention they might want the instructions)

Well, that is pretty worrying. I hope my coins don't get lost/stolen in customs. It's never happened before though, so I think it'll be okay.

Hey! Wanted to toss an update and let you know my coin came in! I sort of lucked out... had someone ringing my doorbell, found out it was a neighbor and they handed me a little envelope and just said "this came to our mailbox..." and walked away. Saw who it came from/location and was baffled by what it could be. Opened it and found out it was the coin!

Really happy the people who received it gave it to me. I never would have even known it came in otherwise, :).

Thanks, Smoothie!

Thanks for confirming when you get the coin.

As promised there was a rather large batch of international giveaways that went out a few days ago.

I had to drop off the box of them and leave it with USPS and it took them 5-6 hours to handle with a single person working on them.

Glad I didn't have to stand there for all of that.

Is it possible that my coin be shipped to Minerjones as he holds some coins of me with him. They need to be shipped sometime soon to me. So, if I send you an email from my email ID and ask you to send it to him so that he can forward those with my other coins, would you accept?

I was away for a while but weeks or so ago I was on btct for just a moment and saw this thread..

I PMd or emailed my shipping info and forgot all about it.. Sent it to my moms..
She called me a while ago and told me I got a package that felt like it had a coin in it and it was this coin.. So I did receive it..

But we just finished my moms new house, got final inspections, and mover her and all of her stuff in, pulled her old house down with chains and trucks..

Now that she is all happy in her new house I have been nagging her to find this coin I got in the mail but so far no dice..

So yes I can confirm that I got it and thank you very much, but I have not scene it yet due to moving chaos lol..

Send email last November 14 and still hoping that my qued is on process now. Send it twice prior to November 14.

Anyways if I ever I won't get it no worries on my side. It's a giveaway after all for lucky members here and with lots of email OP is receiving, the chances of missing my email is really possible.

I will transfer to our new house now few weeks from now so the address stated in my email will not be my address so I asked the land owner here if ever there is a mail to me kindly informed me and I will drop off immediately. :)

I would suspect some may get lost in the mail. It is shipped USPS first class with no tracking or insurance etc.

I have had several envelopes come back to me due to them being "undeliverable" based on the address that was given to me. Those that have this happen to them will not be resent again.

You could do this, the only problem is that by me shipping this to MJ the coin may not get to him for over a month from now. There is no specified time frame and this would hold up your shipment from MJ.

I PMed you twice but never received a reply regarding this. So, I thought I'd go ahead and post it here.

Is it possible that my coin be shipped to Minerjones as he holds some coins of me with him. They need to be shipped sometime soon to me. So, if I send you an email from my email ID and ask you to send it to him so that he can forward those with my other coins, would you accept?

You could do this, the only problem is that by me shipping this to MJ the coin may not get to him for over a month from now. There is no specified time frame and this would hold up your shipment from MJ.

I've to receive a big batch from MJ actually, and this can't be done in a single package anyhow. So, I'm okay with it. I'd like to request you to please send my coin to MJ. Either way, I'm gonna send both of you a single PM regarding this.

Regards.

Thanks for the updates, I am hoping there maybe is a international package headed to Aus in this lot  ;)

Confirmed, I have received the coin. I was thinking I would receive it the same time as bitkilo, though. Hope you get yours soon!

You already got yours, ah not fair man, lol. How long ago did you receive it?
I am sure it will just be the snail mails here holding mine bask.

I don't even remember that well, haha. It was around the start of December if memory serves me well.

I guess being here on an island in the middle of the sea, half a world away from all the coin traders on bitcointalk, shipping can't be fast.  ;)
Yeah it's a hard life living on an island separated from the worlds war and worries, although i will complain about the heat at this time of the year, lol..

@smoothie, It looks like i emailed back in October, any of the coins ordered in October still left to ship or are you just shipping them random?
(not complaining because who could complain about a free coin!)  :)

I second that with the heat, we've had a doobie with all sorts of weather this season I wonder what the middle of Summer will bring, more heat or maybe more of those crazy thunderstorms that wakes everyone up at 2 in the morning' ??? :D

On another note I don't think I've heard or seen the Postie in a couple of days which is weird, I wonder if they are taking time off and letting it build up and the price we pay for stamps these days..... :P

If I am not mistaken I have cleared out and shipped most of the November requests. Likely your's was in the shipped batches.

Oh really. That was great.

Hope my package is on it's way now :) I don't mind waiting for long. Hopefully one of these days Im a part now of those peoplewho received the coin and will gladly post it here.

Thank you :)

Otherwise they all shipped out from the October list.

Recieved my free coin today in the UK, from an email done at the start of November

All good. Thanks Smoothie. Very generous of you.

Wonders if the rise in XMR is really down to the new GUI, or if its from folks loading the coins they have recieved from you  :D

Mine as well, I think I was one of the first people that entered the giveaway(I sent him the email about a hour after he posted), but I still haven't received mine.

Just a bad luck I guess, but anyway from what I saw this coin is purchase able, so I'll put few bucks to get it.

We can not complain as we didn't pay for the coin, it was just a gift :P

If anyone has funded xmr coins coming through, I would highly recommend that you ask to send it registered/tracked and in a padded envelope. I ended up getting an empty envelope today, with just the instruction paper in it. It's not smoothie's fault or anything, but let my incident serve as a reminder to everyone that your items are not always safe.

Any plans to have an unfunded brass version of your silver Monero coins? Maybe 1XMR or 10XMR version?

I really like the design but don't like the idea of funded coins / can't afford them. I would definitely buy one for like $20.

The envelope was empty? You did not inquire with the postal office? You should have complained because it's their fault if the parcel has been tampered with. Even sometimes tracked items are lost or damaged and I've too received the courier where the entire parcel was open including the product inside.

The envelope was empty. I went to the post office, and an investigation is being run. They said that it was broken when it got into the country, but there really is no way of knowing where it was tampered with. I will just have to keep following up with the investigation.

I sent the mail on 4th-5th November and the package was sent by smoothie after a month or 5 weeks. I received it on 13th-14th Jan 2017 which is about another month. You should expect the parcel by next week or by 10th Feb if everything goes through in time.

UPDATE:

Currently there is a pretty large backlog of giveaway requests that will be going out in the next week or two.

I've gotten several undeliverable addresses and the envelopes were sent back to me.

As the giveaway gets closer to ending (the 1000 brass coin limit) the order in which requests are made will be in the order they ship out. Once the limit has been reached I will post in the OP and modify the thread title to note such.

Please keep in mind that if you haven't gotten your coin, any number of reasons could be the cause (lost in the mail, theft, returned, undeliverable).

There are many things I have no control over given these are being shipped first class mail with no tracking/signature etc.

I will not resend shipments of giveaway coins that do not arrive in the possession of the requestor.

I've gone through my email requests and have spent many hours getting these packaged and shipped out. If they get to you, they get to you, if not, then someone else has your coin... :-[

All for now  :)

It doesn't get any more fair than that, thanks again smoothie, it's very much appreciated! :D

smoothie, can you tell us approximately how many freebies have been sent out?  I'd love to know and expect others would too.  You mentioned coins getting lost\stolen and I think that's great.  I wonder how many people have inadvertently been turned onto monero because of you. =)

My last count that was sent out was around ~560.

I have like 300 or so backlog of requests.

So i'd wager to say I'm closing in on 900 or so if you count the ones I haven't sent out yet.

How long does it usually takes for them to deliver? I sent my email on 20/11/2016 but it hasn't arrived yet.

Me I think last 14/11/2016 or close to that as far as I remembered. I send 3 times. Looks like I will give up now lol. But if this is still open I will send again an email if smoothie will allowed me to do sending again and if the giveaway is not yet closed.

Really eyeing for this giveaway since last year.

And what language is this?

Thanks!

P.P.S. By the way, what's the translation of the Hawaiian words around the edge of the coin...?

It means "private, decentralized, electronic".

I will now give up to my hopes. :D It's been 4 months now.

Can I request for the fifth time? Or if this still open and not yet reached the max numbers of coins to be given away? Hope I can request for another one. :)

You are welcome to try. If I end up noticing duplicate addresses (or incomplete addresses) for previous requests I will likely ignore them.

I have no control over if the coin gets to the person requesting it given they are shipped USPS first class mail.

Average waiting time I think in my country is 1 month or maybe longer than that but I will wait.

Thanks again. :)

Thank you smoothie for the coin, I was surprised to see it in my mail box. It was held first by customs but they released it after paying some fees and when I opened the envelope, I never thought I would receive such a nice looking coin with a personalized markings. This really made my day!

I placed it right beside our local 5 Peso coin for size comparison. Thank you so much!

No smoothie doesn't reply to emails on this - you will either get it or not depending on shipping etc - he hasn't announced it as closed so keep up the hope. Cheers ;)

You will not get notification from OP that there is a coin on the way to your mailbox. That's what happened to me. I have no idea that there is a coin and I received a letter from our local customs telling me that there's a parcel waiting for me to be claimed in our city postal office. The coin is free but the fees that will be collected by the customs if there's any is not.

Hello. Was there a private key with the coin? I only have the two Holo brands and a guide with an example. But no private key. On the envelope, it says, that the content has a value of 5 Monero.  ???

Sorry for asking over one year later but i wanted to load the coin to give it as a gift.  :)

No the coins were sent without monero loaded on it. You can use the instructions to make a new private key to load the coins yourself and insert it on the giveaway coin.

Thanks! Was just wondering because on the envelope was written that a value of 100$ is inside.
