Title: How many bitcoins are missing?
Post by: dyseac on April 03, 2013, 09:13:25 AM
It got me thinking.... how many bitcoins are already lost forever due to PC's destroyed in fires, HDD's crashing etc.. Is there even a way to know?  ???

The only way to know is to go by what is reported by users. There is no way to tell just by inspecting the blockchain which bitcoins are "lost" and which simply haven't been moved yet (ie, savings).

As I understand it accounts will be there for as long as the bitcoin network keeps working.

That's why you should always keep your wallet.dat on a disc and put it in a fire proof safe.

I put mine on a USB and tied it to the top of a tree.

winner ???

That's the benefit of physical bitcoins they are easier to take care of. But I guess they are not protected against fire or physical damage if your dog chews on the coin and the code gets damaged.
