The only way to know is to go by what is reported by users. There is no way to tell just by inspecting the blockchain which bitcoins are "lost" and which simply haven't been moved yet (ie, savings).Title: Re: How many bitcoins are missing? But I guess they are not protected against fire or physical damage if your dog chews on the coin and the code gets damaged.
