Title: 4x 5830s power supply
Post by: gdrop on June 14, 2011, 01:09:29 AM
Hello,

I currently have 3 Sapphire 5830's running on a MSI 890FXA-GD70 mobo with a Cooler Master GX 750w PSU.

I have another 5830 that I haven't figured out how to add on to the rig.

There are 4x PCI-E 6 + 2 pin power connectors and 3 4-pin peripheral power connectors on the PSU, and I'm currently using 6 of them for the 3 GPUs.

If I add another GPU I don't have enough power connectors, but I remember recommendations for this specific PSU and MOBO combo for the quad 5830 rig.

Any help?

Each video card should come with two molex to pci-e adapters.

Yes, but I need a total of 8x 6 pin PCI-E power connectors.

The PSU has 4 native 6+2 connectors, and 3 molex. I'm using 2 of the molex ones with converters, but I seem to need one more 6 pin for the 4th gpu.

You can probably get a sata to molex adapter and then hook that up to the pciexpress cable.  I'd be worried about 750w being enough to power 4x 5830s though.

Almost any card you buy is going to come with the Molex converters.  As for power supply, you _might_ be able to get away with the 750, but I doubt it.  A 5830 is going to pull 160-175W at full load, so figure up to 700W for just the cards.

I'd opt for a 950 or so just to be safe, but you do have a few other options.

First, pick up a Kill-a-watt meter if you don't already have one.  Start up your rig and see what it's pulling at full power, then stop one of the cards and see what you drop down too.  Might give you an idea if you're close.

Other option is to just pick up a second PSU, something small like a 450-500 and run one or two cards with just that PSU.  It's pretty easy to short the PSU pins out to have the second PSU power other cards without being hooked up to the motherboard.

I'd suggest trying it with 750, but expect you'll need a bigger or secondary PSU.

Get rid of that psu! The GX series were not very good, they have bad ripple and can't even perform at rated specs. You will risk damaging your rig with that psu. For Cooler Master psu, stick with Silent Pro and Real Power Pro series. Read reviews of a psu prior to purchase.
