Title: 50.4 GHz effective CPU - worth it?
Post by: spartaaa on June 14, 2011, 01:32:53 AM
Hello - I tried to post this in the hardware section but it wouldn't let newbies.

I was mining bitcoins on my personal laptop and only achieving an average of 6.7 M/hash which earned me roughly ~0.014 btc/day. This was through CPU mining on a 2.3 GHz machine (my GPU is a low quality intel)

I have the opportunity to rent a 50.4 GHz array - but because it's CPU only it does not seem worthwhile - by my logic it would only generate 0.306 btc/day - to make it all worthwhile and profitable I would need to generate ~2.00 btc per day.

If my conclusions are correct - this would not be profitable, perhaps someone that understands this better than I can verify or challenge my assumptions.

Thank you for your assistance.

I'm guessing it would just be easier to install a high quality GPU into my laptop - if so, can anyone recommend anything for a Lenevo Thinkpad (it was given to me by my school)

Personally, CPU mining isn't worth it.
Even with my GPU mining @ 22-28Mhash/s, it would take me ~5-20 days to get even 1 BTC.
I'm kind of just mining for fun until I get hardware to do some serious testing.

CPU mining is not worth it, period.
GPU mining might be worth it but not when you have to buy new hardware.
And since you mentioned using a notebook it is even worse since you can't dissipate heat effectively and might cause overheating.
Besides if you have read up on the forums all mining rigs are built using desktops since mobile GPUs are usually underpowered.

lol...thank you - I'll probably just standby until it makes financial sense to upgrade to a tower with a better GPU

Wait to long and the difficulty will come back to bite.
Get the coins whilst it's not too late!

What does it cost you to rent this farm of CPU's?
