Title: [2016-10-26] Bitfinex Seeks Communication With Bitcoin Thief Post by: foserfox on October 26, 2016, 05:25:22 AM On August 2nd the Hong Kong-based Bitcoin exchange Bitfinex was compromised for roughly $70 million worth of Bitcoin. According to sources, the attacker managed to drain the exchange through its multi-signature security — gaining 120,000 BTC from the breach. Now the exchange is trying to reach out to the responsible party in an attempt to get its customers’ Bitcoin returned.
The Bitfinex compromise shook the entire cryptocurrency community last summer. When the attack happened Bitcoin’s fiat value plummeted to $480 per BTC. Since then, its price has bounced back and Bitfinex is again fully operational. As time passed, the company has provided additional information on reimbursing its customer base via its own issued BFX token. However there has been little information on how the exchange is working with authorities, or the investigation progress. It's a worthless and poor attempt to make it look like they are doing everything to get the coins back. Like seriously, a hacker steals an amount of coins that he secured himself a good rest of his life with, will contact Bitfinex and return the coins, with as result that all his efforts are gone to waste. It would be a pathetic hacker for sure. But then again, I still believe it was an inside job.

Most of the times thats exactly what happen, people should not expect to get his coins back, how many times this will happend again? :P I never tire of saying we should start thinking on decentralized exchanges, i really think this is the way that we should take, who will be the next to be "hacked"? Only in such a case, if the hacker was close to getting caught, would he even think of returning a part of the money. This doesn't make Bitfinex look good at all. If it is revealed that this hack was an inside job, it's tough for Bitcoin. No matter how decentralized and secure the system is, as long as we rely on humans to create and host BTC services, this shit will happen again and again. A lot of us has speculated that it was a inside job, just as we speculated that the MtGox was a inside job. MtGox was much bigger, and we are still around. Yes these hacks slows us down, but it's not getting us down. We know these centralized services are to be blamed, and not bitcoin or the protocol. Where in life have thieves willing negotiate the run of their largesse? Instead of playing the Ostrich, I think Bitfinex should look up and see that there is no way the compromise would have been possible without an insider, their search light should be beamed on themselves, then they will make headway to the thief.
