I imagine this will cause BTC to crash quite a bit.

I haven't been back into bitcoins for a while, so I'm unfamiliar with how many coins they manage.
It seems like they're handling it the way they should with the case-by-case claims system.
I personally don't trust online wallets; I'd only use mtgox when cashing out.

Edit: My guess is that after the 90 day claim system is done, they'll resume operations (if not before then for generating and using new wallets).

I do not think itīs wise to use oneline wallets, always keep your coins in a secure wallet and backed up digitally and physically on paper!

Technical Details
     www.instawallet.org uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for the following names:
  *.bitcoin-central.net , bitcoin-central.net 

(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

Secure wallets and Paper wallets are all good advice... IF you aren't wanting to TRADE bitcoins. If you are looking to make money with BitCoins you unfortunately have to use whatever is on the exchange you are using.

Having the private key in the url is never a good idea.
