Title: bter.com, money gone
Post by: henry001_999 on October 29, 2016, 01:46:47 PM
I had around 120 dashcoin that were deposited around two years ago and kept on bter.com.

Yesterday, I connected to bter.com, and my money had vanished: the balance is now around 5 USD.

I checked the trade history, and it says that on the 2016-09-22, from 07:05:34 to 07:05:41, all my dashcoin were sold to buy bitcoins, at gradually decreasing prices from 0.01908000 BTC to 0.01300000 BTC at then end.

Then, repeatedly, from 07:07:50 until 07:20:07, MSC were bought at the price 0.01 btc/msc and then immediately the same amount was sold to buy bitcoins at the price 0.002 btc/msc, and so on until there is nothing on my account (basically someone bought at a very high price and sold at very low price, until I have nothing left).

What can have happened ? Of course I did no do these trades, and there is nothing in the withdrawal history, just these aberrant trades. I asked bter.com for explanations, they have not answered so far.

I wonder how you managed to remember your password for your account as many would have forgotten it . Have you tried contacting their support system till now as they might provide some valueable information apart from your trade history ? You might have shared password with someone you have trust on .

Read the message before responding, it is written that I contacted them and that they have not answered.
Of course I did not share my password.
And again, read the message, it looks like a method to take the money away from within the site. Someone from exterior would have just made a transfer. Or it was a way to move money to another account.
In all cases, bter.com must have the informations, and yet they refuse to give explanations.

this is an strange thing that has happened to your account because usually when you get hacked they withdraw your money and be done with it.

although if Bter uses Email verification for withdrawal that would be explainable since they needed an alternative way of emptying your account.

but also i think the only other possible explanation is that you had an API key that was compromised and the only way the hacker could withdraw was to use those keys to do trades.

also i should add that Bter is not such a trustworthy place after the huge hack of 7700BTC

It is not that unusual, hackers like to target 'abandoned' accounts. But from what I read you are accusing Bter of snatching your balance.
Users here can't help you with your problem - your only way of finding out more is spamming Bter's support constantly, threaten them if you have to.

Leaving a balance for 2 years on your online wallet/exchange account is not something you should do anyway.

Ok thanks, I wanted a confirmation that it was a hacking issue.
I am going to contact them again, and keep you posted.

After several emails, bter.com told me that my account had been hacked. They have not yet issued any refund, and do not answer my emails anymore. So I think my money is definitely lost.

Definitely lost. It usually is, especially when they pull out the "Account Hacked" response.
Don't keep your hopes up for a refund as they'll just chalk up the incident as "User Negligence" and that's it.
Unless of course, you can somehow prove, the leak wasn't from your end. (Quite impossible to prove)

I'm quite curious, before 2016-10-28, when was the last time you accessed your account there?
If it was 2 years back, then it's quite a pity that the said "Hack" happened not even a month before you finally logged in.
"They" probably thought it was a forgotten account or something.

Anyway, sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately they're gone forever and if they aren't offering a refund you're out of luck. That's the crappy thing about Web wallets and exchanges, we're in the wild west and there are no rules / regulations that make it so they have to purchase insurance for when you get hacked.

After urging them to give me my money back,
they have acknowledged that their site had been attacked (so it is not a negligence from me), but they definitely refuse to give the money back.
Here is their answer:

"Hi,Very sorry,Hackers have been turned away.We can't return it to you."

I will keep you posted to see if they do something. In the meantime, bter.com must be considered as a farce, and should be avoided at all costs.

I guess that's there reason for you so they will not issue refund you in that way. So all you can do is don't store you coins in any third party app as long you don:t have the private key of that wallet. Its been to years but you can do access your account I mean you don't forget your password that long time. Anyways you can't do anything but accept it and move on and hope that will serve as a lesson for you.

Bter.com is a known weak exchange site and i doubt that anybody is really trading there anymore apart from fake bots of their own to move some volume up and down.

they have been hacked once for about 7700 bitcoin if i remember it right, and they have been like this ever since. they never improved anything about their site and never paid their customers back
