I would say both measures are terrible as a measurement of popularity.

Usualy i use https://coinmarketcap.com for looking for the most popular altcoins, you can check on there, many popular altcoins on there, and litecoin is still popular although the price is going down but doesn't mean litecoin is not popular, it is just fluctuation of price litecoin.

Still pretty much Litecoin and Dogecoin for popular users base. For trading there are like of Ripple, Eterium and now Zcash.

Take a look at cryptocompare.com. They offer a pretty nice comparison of "popularity".

Litecoin has to be well up there, it is the only real alt worth considering in my mind.

Back to the topic ETHEREUM are still holding the popular coins in this time, over 5k btc are trade just in one volume. Zcash are the hottest one in this week.

Every single one of my alts seems to be taking a pretty serious hit since bitcoin begun pumping, I thought they would recover slowly buit they still seem to be going down. Maybe the only coin worth being invested in actually is bitcoin.

actually the litecoin was popular at that time when it was about 2 month old in tge bitcoin world .
but in the current time its price is going to buy stable from ling ago .
but now the most popular is blry , because the owner of blry is going to win his last debate . and many people holding the blry .

I think it depends on the country, I know Litecoin is popular with the Chinese people, Ethereum has been on the rise this year and have alot of followers.

Now is Zcash, I see most of the posts here with Zcash on thread title. I wonder why it is popular :) since I am not aware from which trading exchanges it is now.Aside from zcash is litecoin,dodgecoin.NEM,ETHereum etc

For me, that would be Ethereum. Considering the number of miners and holders, that might be that one.

As far as widely adopted, utilized, usable, etc. ETH has to be the top non-BTC crypto.  LTC, XRP, and DASH would be the next three after that for me.

The most popular ones are Ethereum and Litecoin because :
- they have been consistently popular by volume and market cap
- they have the widest support from wallets and exchanges

The are potential upcoming heavyweights like Monero, ZCash or Dash which all try to capture the anonymity share of the market.

The most popular coins for this year are ethereum, monero and the  latest one is Zcash, but ethereum won't last long, while monero is keep on increasing this year and has potential become better in next year, the phenomenal one is zcash, the price is higher than bitcoin but many believe it just temporary

Litecoin is the original altcoin, that's why I think it will always be one of the most popular, but right now I guess Ethereum is number one altcoin, and Doge is also pretty big.

It is said that Ethereum to be the next bitcoin in coming years. Though not sure about it. Considering the volume and purchase in 24 hrs, there is no one near Ethereum and also this are considered to be alt coin and not the main stream coins.

Few alts which have created so much news/hypes/speculation before are; ETH, ETC, MONERO, FACTOM in past and still they are trading with high daily volume.

Latest in this list is Zcash, hard to believe the price it have right now.

I think popularity can be a good indicator for the success of an Altcoin. Wikipedia says Dash has become the most active altcoin community on BitcoinTalk reaching more than 6300 pages, 127k replies, 7.7M reads. Popularity and success can have a good correlation in this regard.

Here in the current time you can't say that a particular coin is more profitable than other because in the current many altcoins have Competition to rise in the market .
Here in my opinion fee of the coin which have the stability to increase demand and price in the future are below .
1) BTM coin , it has a good trading average daily in the Poloniex and Nova exchage but still prices are not much high( around 30k Satoshi)
2) Ripple , recently it got support by about 11 to 12 banks in the world for the Foreign countries money exchage platform .
3) Posw , this coin is the official coin of poswallet , so it's demand is really going increasing , I made Profit with this altcoin about 0.6btc in the last week .
4) Dgb , the segwit will came of this wallet and will become powerful in the future like the ETH , Currently price is very low , so better to buy some lakh coin .
5) Pak coin , this altcoin has the price range from 80 Satoshi to 300 Satoshi , so buy this altcoin​ when it is at the price of 100 Satoshi and then you can easily sell it at the 150 satoshi Because 150 Satoshi​ is a normal price rise per week for this coin .
Beside of these the most popular are Putin , creva , money , ETH , dash , EDR etc these has good support by the millionaire .

Ethereum of course, whether its marketcap or 24hr volume or even the worldwide marketing, I think the people who know bitcoin, also know about Ethereum and you cannot say the about any other coin.
But close enough are Litecoin, Doge, Dash and Ripple.

It totally depends on the current trend of investors and market. If you see 1 month ago dash was the popular one as it had a really good increase. Now we all can see that investors have shifted to ltc and eth so you can say in one way they are currently the popular ones, popular coins will not stay permanent they will keep changing.

Popularity in the altcoin space is really rather relative. So many coins have their own communities and own use cases, thus they are popular in their space. If you consider popularity in terms of marketcap or such, then likely Ether is the most popular alt right now. The crypto space allows for many "popular" coins though.

Define 'being popular'. Marketcap and token price or trading volume are obviously not the best indicators of popularity.
I would rather say that popular coins are projects which are known to wider group of people.
Popular Coin has media attention, we can read news about it in popular mainstream services.

ETH, LTC, and NEM is the sleeping giant that will wake up when a couple more big exchanges like kraken cover it... It is less covered by exchanges than many coins trading for far less.  Would make more sense for btc-e to add xem and remove namecoin. It'll happen in time.  Oh yeah...ripple... Which has always has more "big boy" connections.

I have to say, Litecoin still pretty up there IMO.  Although Eth is also worth a mention.

among altcoins in my opinion:
* most number of users in social media (fans): Dogecoin
* most amount of usage as a currency: Litecoin and Monero
* highest trading volume: this varies when coins are getting pumped they have ridiculous amount of volume and that lasts for a short time.
* oldest altcoin which is still big: Litecoin and Monero, and i guess Dash too!
* Biggest advertising campaign with lots of shills: Ethereum

Bitcoin is the mainstream in the crypto currency and it's followers which are alt coins have their list and tops. The second to the top is I consider as the most popular alt coin, currently ETH reached another good amount and a lot of holders of it are really happy about it. And for the next on the list is LTC and XMR.

I think nowadays popularity change with the trade and mining profit. 1 month ago, it was Etherium thanks to big price increase. 1 week ago, it was Gnosis (with 5 min. ICO)  Today i think Ripple, Litecoin and stellar. Especially about Ripple there is much news which can manipulate the price of XRP easily. For tomorrow? We will see...

for now i see XRP is the most populer Altcoin , because XRP get big news so it's positif value Among traders ., you can see marketcap today xrp (8.97%) Volume (24h) $179,222,000 , 115,643 BTC ,) i not see dev XRP manipulate the price because i believe every week , months altcoin get increase price ..

I don't think that there is any scale to choose a particular coin and say that is famouse in all coin , And it depends upon the users of the users to users community network whether they are looking in which coin .
In this current time for me the best altcoin and also a famouse altcoin is cloack coin and bitconnect coin because these are those two coin which are discussing in my friend circles and also people are investing as much as they can , But opposite of this these two coins will be useless in your opinion because you have not heard much about these two .

I do agree because many gambling sites are accepting this doge coin to play online gambling. But the value is very less not increasing. Is there any assurance that this coin will go up in coming months then I will buy and hold. Because I don't like to lose money to invest in now famous coins.

I agree with you ETH is a popular coin number 2 after BTC. All ICOs currently use ETH coins, if you look at marketcap now eth is at the bottom position. It's time to buy as much as you can afford. 2018 I'm sure ETH will be a big competitor BTC.

LTC is a strong currency that exists for so long, it is another version of bitcoin, it serializes bitcoin through the virtual currency system, however, it is unpopular, even it has been abandoned a long time.

yes, we got Ethereum, litecoin, ripple and many more that very popular and most used until now but don't ever forget about doge, back then in 2014 when bitcoin starting to got attention from people, beside it we have DOGE, even though i know it's popular because following the famous meme, DOGE is very memorable cause has a very friendly name that easy to remember, and may be every crypto user know about this coin ;D but about the development i never hear the dev is still work for it or not  :-\

For now dgb is most populat altcoin. i see dgb at everywhere. Every signal group , every forum. And i think it is bad. Too much advertisiment is bad for coin becase people think this coin is pump coin. And it isn't well

I once had a problem with waves, many people were behind me with the same case. I believe in you. It's just sharing experiences. Difficult to do WD BTC from waves, it must be done several times. This is disappointing.
