Noted.

I saw another one a few days ago where they claimed they would encrypt your wallet for you. Can't say I have the link anymore (Genius, I know...)

tl;dr Don't send your wallet.

lol - "verify your wallet" - why in the world should it not be valid?! :D
Nice try though - it is almost like "Send me 1 BTC and send you 2".

Well, as soon as the internet is involved a lot of people stop thinking and then this scam will work (ie "adding personal info to some profile for everybody to see", "showing all your 'friends' where you throw up last weekend", ... ;) )

For kicks, I renamed a 150kb jpg to wallet.dat.  This was the response:

Code:
YOUR BITCOIN WALLET WITH HASH d40a5e9f0e87bc7c32782f8aa349e6b861307b9c IS VALID FOR 2011-06-14T06:28:20UTC

Phew!  Glad I got that one sorted out, I was afraid my wallet wasn't working right!

Right, never send your wallet to anyone, except if you want to send bitcoins to them.  Keep many backups, encrypted especially if online. Savings wallets should always be offline (on computers that never touch the internet).

The best part is, this was the jpg:

http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/funny-pictures-cat-sees-what-you-did.jpg

So if he is trying to figure out what the file actually is, and renames it to a .jpg... well, he'll know that I saw what he did there.  :P

Goto the website
In firefox, click on Help->Report web Forgery.
And give a reason e.g. " This website is trying to scam suckers from their money"

Better yet, generate a whole bunch of legitimate wallet files, and post them here.  Don't send any BTC to them.  Just post them here, and we'll all upload them many times over from various IP addresses.  Then, he has no way to tell which is legit and which is not, and has to use -rescan on each one.

What was it you used to say about aggression? Or is this defence again?
Is it defence when you're aggressive something you don't like, but defence when someone is aggressive against something you like?

But I do agree that the website should be avoided and reported.

This website is defrauding individuals for the purpose of stealing their bitcoins. Yes, the use of a DDoS (which is non-violent, I would argue) is an acceptable action to take in response.

They are initiating force against the ignorant.

Oh please. That argument can be used to attack anyone at any time.

Anyone using their knowledge in any field can be the target of your vigilante justice because they're "initiating force against the ignorant" by their mere expertise in the field.

This is why anarcho-capitalism, voluntarism or whatever you call it is garbage. It's just word play to allow "might makes right".

The website owners might be scum, but you don't have to be.
And no, a DDoS isn't non violent. Informing the public is. Barricading the entrance isn't.

While it's understandable to have scammers / con-artists in any market, I do still find it quite surprising to see the amount of people that have fallen victim to these scams, especially since use of Bitcoins does require a (tiny) bit of technical knowledge.

Was it PT Barnum who said there's a sucker born every minute? You can definitely fool some of the people some of the time.
I always thought that was WC Fields. But you are right, PT Barnum was associated with "There's a sucker born every minute", WC Fields famous line was "“Never give a sucker an even break"

Guys. Do not advocate DOSing these people. This is counter productive. The original site referenced in this thread had already been disabled by the time I saw this but walletinspector.info had not. THIS is the proper way to handle this:

- long quote snipped-

Followed by a polite phone call to both the owner of the compromised site and to linode's listed abuse contacted in the whois database for the ip. The site was pulled within a couple hours.
I never advocated (D)DoSing. I just pasted the whois information of the owner of the site.

I like the way it opens up a box so you can quickly find it to make uploading that much easier and straightforward...... :P

Going to inspect my wallet..just to be sure it's valid :))
Not really..isn't this better target for these ddos attacks than pools?
