Title: litecoin vs namecoin vs bytecoin vs ???
Post by: pandemic on April 04, 2013, 12:46:15 PM
With bitcoin slowly moving towards ASIC only, I'm interested in mining another cryptocurrency. I'm really not sure the difference between the three listed and there could be more I've never heard of.

My questions at this point - which one is the easiest to convert to from mining bitcoin? Which are the most commonly used at this point? Which do you see as following in bitcoin's footsteps?

I'm not too sure. I'm more interested in bytecoin myself.

You can mine bitcoin with namecoin in a merged mining pool but in the future only with asic or at least with a very good graphic card.
Litecoin is not asic friendly so you can mine it with a simple computer.
Bitcoin is the most secure and most accepted and there will be 21 million of coins.
With Namecoin  you can also register alternative, decentralized domain names (.bit at the moment, .tor intended) also but you can trade it also.
Namecoins will be less then 21 millions because by every domain registration some coins will be destroyed.
Litecoin has the advantage that you can mine it with any computer and there will be 84 million of coins.

Noone knows for sure if Bytecoin survives next few weeks. But if u like lottery, u should mine it for sure.

True, all I have is hope.
It's one of my first experiences with alt cryptocurrency.

terracoin will surge past them all.  you know why?  its about to make headlines.  they're introducing it to btc-e and its going to go from zero to hero because of that.  ppc too, but moreso trc because trc has less volume and will be eaten quickly by the mob, where ppc there are plenty of, and it will surge but not nearly as dramatically as trc... straight up

im going to do everything in my (very limited) power to see that it does. Im plan to continue to post a new auction for .1 bitcoin for bytecoin every week thus incentivizing people to actually mine it. Incidentally i have an auction up right now https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=166565.0

I would personally go with litecoin

Why litecoin?

I'm looking for something that I can get up and running where my dual 5830's would be able to mine a decent amount. Namecoin seems a bit more limited than bitcoin and I don't get the whole idea behind using them to register a domain name.

litecoin seems like it's the weaker brother of the bitcoin. Almost like bitcoin is dollars and litecoin is cents.

Of the two, which is more widely adopted at this point?

At the current difficulty you could mine around 120 litecoins per month. The current price of a litecoin is $4. Litecoin is currently the second biggest crypto currency after Bitcoin.

Here are my estimates for what your hardware could achieve per month in different currencies at this moment:

Bitcoin 1.37 COINS   $180
Litecoin 120 COINS $520.74
Namecoin 16.4 COINS $18.45
PPCoin 2079 COINS $714.04
Terracoin 916 COINS $489.18

Can you reliably mine ppcoin or litecoin with nvidia cards and/or CPU's? I have a gtx570 and an i5 2500k

I'm looking into litecoin now since it seems to be more widely accepted. Thoughts?
